It is bad, for a franchise player type of talent. That and an underwhelming 2nd year player. Let's look at it for what it really is...a salary dump. To get rid of contracts that Mills himself was stupid enough to give out.

That's what I got from this Bondy tweet. Knicks get the 2021 pick unless Dallas 2019 pick lands inside the top 5. They traded the pick to ATL with top 5 protection. So based off this tweet. They traded the 2019 pick to the Knicks if its 1-5 or it will go to ATL if its 6-30.

I'm seeing it the other way around...He said the Knicks need them to finish outside of the top 5 so it can go to ATL. If Knicks get the pick if its top 5, why would the Knicks root for it to land outside of the top 5? I think the Knicks root for ATL to get the pick so it assures us that we get it in 2021...if not, it gets pushed back.

At first I was thinking why would 2019 matter to us if they traded us the 2021 pick. Which made me think we would get that 2019 pick. But now I see what he may mean is that if Dallas gets to keep the pick. Then ATL will get the 2020 draft pick and since you can't trade picks in back to back years they wouldn't be able to trade the 2021 pick to us.

I love this trade on many levels. First, the FO managed to bundle *all* the misfit contracts (sans Kanter) into one single trade that eliminates that headache of trying to make four trades. This deserves big-time kudos in and of itself.

Another nice perk is that we shipped out four for three. That opens a roster spot. Nice.

Perry, when he signed THJ, said something to the effect that they had analyzed who was available and pounced on THJ because he was young and heading in the right direction. Smith was not on the radar then. So with this trade, Perry recalibrates that calculation and lands a similar player (with fewer rough edges) on a much more attractive contract. Nice.

Sounds like Porzingis said he would not sign long-term with NO thus (from KP's point of view) killing an AD exchange. As I look at this trade I can't help but feel that maybe NY is just stock-piling picks to continue to try to lure AD.

Its 2 picks,DSjr and CAP SAPCE for a max FA. Include that player when you evaluate the deal.

Correct. Earliest Knicks get a Dallas pick is 2021. Worst case it’s 2022 and 2024 (or beyond cause of top 10 protection).

I think/hope we can flip DeAndre for a second rounder or something. In the modern NBA he's still a fantastic 20-25mpg center.

I haven't watched the news or read any articles on this, but my first take is that the Knicks are all-in on tanking... AND... we're also all-in on signing 2 big free agents, neither named KP.

Tim Hardaway, Courtney Lee... bam. Gone.

We got some assets: Matthews and Jordan are both interesting assets if we can move them to playoff teams. (Jordan in particular would be an extremely valuable big man off the bench or even starter on a playoff team... Matthews is a solid 3&D player who used to be one of the few players that would have Kobe complaining...)

Plus we got 2 first rounders. And we've undone the mistake of picking Frankie over DSJ. I mean, I haven't completely lost faith in Frank, but as I pointed out in the AD thread, it's a perimeter league and you need dynamic perimeter guys to win.

If anything, we're a much more flexible team from a GM standpoint. Cap space + extra first round picks.

KP's been gone so long that it's like I don't even remember him anyway. *shrug*

KP got a lot of growing up to do. This and the response to coach saying he isn’t running yet very telling

Great landing spot for KP. His Dirkness will be appreciated there most of all. He and Doncic can be great together.

This opens so many options for the Knicks. $75mm in cap space is interesting. All the trade chips are more interesting. They have never been in a better position to build the team they want. At this point, they should be collecting 2nd rd picks to give them flexibility filling out the roster.

don't picks get just pushed back if the protection goes through? so we will still get the pick, except not in 2021 but later and still unprotected?

Yes. The picks themselves aren't conditional, only the timeframe when they can get delivered. So One remains unprotected and the other later one is protected.
