It’s unprotected in 2025.

And we don’t exactly get the 2021 yet. We get it if Atlanta gets their pick this year. We get a Dallas pick 2 years after Atlanta gets theirs.

Basically, feel better that the Knicks got two first round picks and don’t mind them until they actually become really ours, which we don’t know when.

So if you care about instant gratification, hope that NY can turn Jordan and Mathews into draft picks in this decade.

Yah

If Dallas ends up in the top 5. The Knicks will get that pick. If they end up outside the top 5 then that pick goes to ATL forcing Knicks to wait until 2021.

Is this confirmed? Haven't seen this anywhere...

That's what I got from this Bondy tweet. Knicks get the 2021 pick unless Dallas 2019 pick lands inside the top 5. They traded the pick to ATL with top 5 protection. So based off this tweet. They traded the 2019 pick to the Knicks if its 1-5 or it will go to ATL if its 6-30.

I'm seeing it the other way around...He said the Knicks need them to finish outside of the top 5 so it can go to ATL. If Knicks get the pick if its top 5, why would the Knicks root for it to land outside of the top 5? I think the Knicks root for ATL to get the pick so it assures us that we get it in 2021...if not, it gets pushed back.

At first I was thinking why would 2019 matter to us if they traded us the 2021 pick. Which made me think we would get that 2019 pick. But now I see what he may mean is that if Dallas gets to keep the pick. Then ATL will get the 2020 draft pick and since you can't trade picks in back to back years they wouldn't be able to trade the 2021 pick to us.

That probably what it is.

Correct. Earliest Knicks get a Dallas pick is 2021. Worst case it’s 2022 and 2024 (or beyond cause of top 10 protection).

Thank you for making it clear, thats what i was wondering. We have never had so many picks before, now lets trade some to move up in the draft. This is the year and in this format each additional pick adds more % to nab the #1 than ever before.

very rarely do you get two unprotected first round picks even for better players who arent injured. Look obviously you think we got shit back but being fair getting back two first(one unprotected and one only top 10 protected) for a player who has had one all star year and has injury issues isnt bad

It is bad, for a franchise player type of talent. One pick that you know for sure won't be top 10 and the other that's in this Doncic window or could be delayed even more if the Mavs get a top 5 pick this year 100% is shitty value. That and an underwhelming 2nd year player. Let's look at it for what it really is...a salary dump. To get rid of contracts that Mills himself was stupid enough to give out.

If the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist...Mills pulling credit for getting rid of the trash he compiled is a super close 2nd.

Its 2 picks,DSjr and CAP SAPCE for a max FA. Include that player when you evaluate the deal.

You don't know that we're getting a max FA. But I don't see how that changes the value part of this specific deal. It didn't mean we needed to deal a franchise type talent for a small assortment of mediocre at best assets. We literally didn't get one top shelf asset for Porzingis, which was probably almost impossible to do. Somehow, the did.

JOrdan can really help Mitch.

Matthews can help Trier and Dotson.

I hope they stick or if dealt, we get more assets to trade.

Even if we don't get the top pick this year, maybe they could edchange picks and add 1 or 2 of the picks they just got to get the player they want.

They have so much flexibility now. That attitude of KP is the reason to do this.

Personally, I think we got outstanding value. You can play Smith at the 1,2 or 6 and he's going to light it up [hopefully not until next season].

Jordan and Matthews are expiring and can be resigned above the cap (who knows).

And I'm not convinced we are signing anyone this summer. Maybe we use the cap space to absorb a player or two who fit.

Our players weren't necessarily trash - just misfits for the current process.

I was a huge KP fan. His attitude behind the scenes has been bad since the PJax years. He reqested a deal.

I think NY did great in not letting that out and got a good young player and 2 futyre picks. Lots is unknown and lots can happen. I like the idea of cap space and I pray they will amke it worh while. Time will tell but I like NY's position more now than before.

I think what they mean to say is that both traded picks get pushed back 2 years to 2021 and 2023.

don't picks get just pushed back if the protection goes through? so we will still get the pick, except not in 2021 but later and still unprotected?

Yes. The picks themselves aren't conditional, only the timeframe when they can get delivered. So One remains unprotected and the other later one is protected.

This is wonderful , thank you !! Getting multiple first round picks , one unprotected for a player that likely would not play another game for us after becoming a free agent is all good

A fan since 1969.

Going to take me some time to get over this one. I've been a fan since 67/8. It would seem that we will never see one of our high picks develop and remain on the team for a 10 yr. run . KP's brothers are shit, but they were also reacting to the shit this franchise puts its players through.

It is very frustrating...What makes it worse is that I have no faith in Fizdale going forward, and I figure he was involved and input in working on the trade. I see little method in our offense, and I don't see him improving any players at this point.

KP will like it in Dallas...he can be the new Dirk, and Cuban is better than anything we have.

We will see.

An unprotected and top 10 protected pick, DSjr, and a ton of cap space is a nice outcome. Can’t recall two firsts being moved recently for any player. Butler, Kawhi, Kyrie. Has there been a trade where a team got that much draft equity?

Something half decent. At least something towards next year or yeah, at least a couple of unprotected picks. If we don't get a max FA, getting nothing for next year stings hard because we'll have that much less to build on.

Be honest...if you even wanted a KP trade, were you sitting there last night or today saying, "man, I hope if we deal KP it's for a dime a dozen underwhelming 2nd year guard, an unprotected 1st in 2021 at the earliest but possibly delayed for a team that has a really bright young star and most likely KP to partner with, a protected pick in 2023 but also possibly delayed and if KP doesn't stay and Doncic leaves could actually turn into a 2nd, and cap space. That would really move my needle!"
