Think you have to factor in the knee injury. Big difference when comparing the two. KP had a serious knee injury after Phil was fired. That definitely created concern and ignited trade thoughts. Did not understand, at the time, why Phil, who traded away everyone and hit the restart button for a high draft pick, would want to trade that draft pick who was playing so well? Thought it was an ego thing.
Coming around on the fact this was inevitable. KP was leaning to moving on. When Knicks blinked on extending him due to injury KP had an easy decision. Understandable that Knicks were concerned about giving a max to an injury prone player coming off major knee surgery. Hope it works out for us.

This is just playing the “according to a source” reports game, but the ones that I read mentioned that NY wanted Booker in the deal but he was never put on the table by the Suns. Instead, they were offering the pick that would turn into Jackson.
Still, back then trading Porzingis would’ve been a crazy proposition. This was before his injury and at a time when the organization really felt that by getting rid of Phil Jackson, things would have a chance at getting better with Porzingis and his camp.
Not like today, when you have to add all the previous tension, the interview skipped, the injury, the recovery, the slow disconnection from KP, Janis seeing players signed even with injury concerns and then the AD trade request.

I always thought the planned Melo buyout was the final straw. The KP trade rumors we're there for a while, before Phil's firing. I think coupe de grace was the idea that Phil was going to eat all of that dead money with no assets coming back.

While Phil drafted KP his thoughts about "center of gravity, injury" and after his rookie season his anemic condition might have played into the fatigue........all in on the diva act of missing the exit meeting adds up.
Phil's sense might have been to instinctively to trade him for assets and not put all the eggs in one basket.
Its illogical that KP would be so put off by not getting a max deal while recovering from ACL and it gives knicks 10mil more to work with, to make the team better.
There were rumors that KP was put off by not playing this season. OK, but now Dallas comes in with the same thing.
Is Dallas can obviously pay him the most but by KP just signing for the qualified offer it give Dallas some room to not lock into him if he breaks.

ESPN lead a mob mentality against Phil Jackson mainly leading the charge was Steven A. The fans on board treated Phil very poorly and he wasn’t deserving of the hate he received.
