Knicks · RJ starting to strut (page 1)

Beginning of the year I was convinced he was a special talent but the shooting and lack of explosion gave me pause. I'm back on the train and hope RJ can figure out shooting in long run.

Dude has the personality that is just right for New York.

I'm a big fan of eFG%, although 3point shooting has skewed that stat a bit if you look at LeBron and the like during their first years versus now

fishmike @ 3/4/2020 11:36 AM
Im so on this train... Ill even take it a step further and say I am getting close and closer to seeing a Frank/RJ backcourt as having a real future. Frank's defense is so good. Like so good. He's got to stay on the court and (obviously) improve offensively but the core of his game is there. A Frank/RJ backcourt is really big and physical.

If Frank can hit 3s and RJ hit FTs I feel like these two could be part of a really good core.

RJ is great. He's got so far to grow and what we are seeing is really promising.

SupremeCommander @ 3/4/2020 11:47 AM
he just needs to get efficient. I have been on the draft RJ bandwagon since we drew #3. For example, I am a huge fan of Jaylen Brown because of all the stuff he can do. I feel the same way about RJ, but I feel like our guy has a much hgiher ceiling.

Rk Player From To G MP PER TS% 3PAr FTr ORB% DRB% TRB% AST% STL% BLK% TOV% USG% OWS DWS WS WS/48 OBPM DBPM BPM VORP
1 RJ Barrett 2020 2020 51 1551 10.3 .473 .271 .347 3.1 14.8 8.8 12.6 1.4 1.0 12.8 23.7 -1.6 0.9 -0.6 -0.020 -3.0 -1.5 -4.5 -1.0
2 Jaylen Brown 2017 2017 78 1341 10.3 .539 .319 .293 3.8 14.4 9.1 7.2 1.3 1.1 12.5 18.1 0.2 1.3 1.5 .053 -3.0 -0.8 -3.7 -0.6

Not a perfect comp by any means but both have the same exact PER in their rookie years and you basically see that RJ is a better passer and Jaylen was better shooter, albeit as a slasher on a loaded team. So, really, if RJ could shoot better than 59% from the charity stripe, his numbers are going to up. To me, that's one of the easier issues to address

Feel like RJ/Frank could be a part of a high level guard rotation but the Knicks still need a high level guard/wing who can consistently break down defenses off dribble and get shot off with ease. RJ got the power thing going on and those long strides but I'm not there yet on him being that guy all the way.

If Frank had hit that three before he drew the charge, there'd be Frank MVP/HOF Candidate threads all over the place... He's growing on me. If he could just stay on the floor for a a full season. And if he could grow a jump shot. And if he could show this for more than a week at a time... And if...

Agree that RJ can bully ball at the moment, but just wonder how truly durable he's going to end up, if he tries playing that way consistently. I love that they show "last 3 game stats" for RJ. I forget who or what started the whole "small sample size" posts that used to appear in almost every thread...

on FT shooting alone Frank has proven that he has what it takes to improve his shot IMHO now he just has to execute.

That he even tried the move in that moment was progress!!!
That Barrett shoots the airball the "bully's" his way in clutch moment. Huge!!
Worry he can sustain? Gotta worry about something I suppose. He mostly does his bullying with good footwork. The shot he took he was able to separate from the defender with minimal contact.
Glad Morris was made gone to open that up for him.

Feel like Tucker had some backward momentum going on but he is one of the stoutest defenders there are at 6'7", and 19 year old RJ bullied him

I love both these guys and Mitch. With Miller coaching I was happy, with the direction we were moving in. We need to get rid of the distraction that is Dennis Smith Jr. Now with coaching change and new FO.- I'll be pissed if any of those 3 gets shipped on some dumb starfuck.

technomaster @ 3/4/2020 2:58 PM
RJ, Frank, & Mitch all make good building blocks - all useful pieces on winning teams... but none of them look like true franchise cornerstones. The superstar anchor (let's use all of analogies) will need to come from somewhere else.

With that said, I'd love for RJ to become the guy. The biggest concern limiting his upside at the moment is that he really needs to get better as a shooter. He's improved over the course of the season - his 59 FT% is way up from earlier this season. In order for him to elevate his game, he'll need to improve his shooting A LOT (hey, Frank did it) or get more crafty and find a way to do more damage inside. For a guy that projects as a good bully around the basket and already is able to draw fouls, well, he's giving away points by not making the shots. It's been improving over time so maybe next season we'll see him crack 70%. For what it's worth his FG% is up to 40% again! Good shooting form will also hopefully ladder up to an improved in-game jumper. All told, if the rest of his game remains static but only his shooting improves to let's say 42%FG/33%3pt/70%ft, he'll already be a beast. If he can get better than that, we're talking high level all-star.

Knixkik @ 3/4/2020 3:05 PM
RJ is looking very good. Frank can be a nice piece, but I still don't see a starter. I see him as a nice combo guard off the bench, and the player next to RJ needs to be an excellent spot up shooter/scorer. Maybe Haliburton or Cole Anthony can fit. VanVleet is another option.

Marcus Smart... thats the role I see more and more for Frank. Maybe he plays backup PG and gets about 30mpg because the team is always better when he's on the floor
StarksEwing1 @ 3/4/2020 4:03 PM
RJ has been looking good. Overall I’ve liked what I’ve seen for such a young kid. Dealt with some injuries and needs to fix the FTs but I’m excited for the future. As for Frank I accept him for what he is and as a fan of defensive players I feel he is a key part going forward
TheGame @ 3/4/2020 5:28 PM
Definitely on RJ bandwagon. I think he will be the heart of the team going forward. Frank is growing. We just have to hope Frank can continues to make marginal improvements each season. Maybe in 2 years, he plays consistently enough to be our backup pg/closer. We still need a more offensive minded pg, who is good from 3, which I hope will be Ball in this draft. Mitch is a beast. We have 3 guys who look solid. Plus iggy and Dotson are good. Knox is still a question but he still has potential. We do have to realize that these kids are still growing. They will all be better in 2-3 years.
Nalod @ 3/4/2020 5:51 PM
Is Dotson hurt? If not, he and trier are toast. Just the rule of the jungle. Its a tough business. Dennis needs to get woke and stake his claim. He gets a chance. He don't deserve it, but he gets it.
Hope the rockets game demonstrates some form of renewed enthusiasm. Seemed like "Its the YOOTS" and new boss gives new opportunity. RJ got the keys to the franchise, Kevin is told to relax, Frank got 1248 email and they talked it out, and Mitch is chasing the ghost of wilt! Maybe Miller was given assurances he will be back in some form or CAA will see he gets taken care of!
Maybe its just one night and we got go back to last week doldrums again, but it was fun!

Franks aggressiveness has been showing recently and he's having more efficiant shooting. It makes sense because he has great form on his free throws. And he hits 3s in shootaround. I think he's a bad shooter if he has too much time to think about it. But his aggressiveness is taking his brain out of it, letting his body react more from muscle memory, and there have been better offensive games recently. That's his key. Aggresiveness. If he can learn to do that consistantly we may see the player that flashed in the World Tournament. Frank's clutch too. Can't teach that. I'm not ready to relegate Frank to a career backup role just yet. He gets better every year. A bit, but Baby steps for a cute baby.

he is doing fine but he still needs a game where he breaks that 30 points mark. still waiting for that day.

Yeah it's possible. Those Marcus Smart types don't work everywhere though. Hoping the Knicks can add the necessary shooting and star power for a player like Frank to become more valuable.

I see it as his next step or phase. He hasnt shown enough to project him as a starter yet. He's still averaging 6ppg and 3assist in 20 mins on 39% shooting. I agree he looks much better with the eye test and I really hope his game flourishes here but its too early. Marcus Smart role is reasonable, and if Frank plays his way into something bigger... well thats exactly what we want.

Shooting is the key. Even RJ's shot is never elite his drive and dish ability at SG certainly can be. A top flight defender next him like Frank (who's gotta hit 3s) is the best fit
