but guys...what's the worst that could happen?
firefly @ 10/10/2020 2:41 PM
I apologize everyone I've stopped coming to visit this thread because tbh it's just heartbreaking. From the moment a virus became politicised, everything else accelerated downhill. Such a bitter blow for American exceptionalism. It should be an ideal to aspire to and instead it became something 40% of the country hate and call "elite". Really really sad. People have forgotten what working for common good feels like.

I was worried something had happened to you firefly, so I'm glad you're alive and well. I agree it's heartbreaking, life can be better than this and so can people

It is great to have your own little country on the beautiful island after coming and infecting locals with diseases they have no immunity and currently not allowing anybody in except of selected few who collect enough points to be deemed fit.
Good background and experience to fight covid.

How about this for worst that can happen: Biden wins, kills Obamacare, covid goes on to have wave 3,4,5 etc. as vaccines and treatments are being tested but not available for everyday people. Now not only hundreds of thousands are dying but now a few million Americans that recovered from covid are bankrupt because they cannot pay healthcare bills. Country goes into another Great Depression. Not sure which parts of this scenario are the most far fetched, Scary part is that this scenario is not THAT far fetched. But hey we would remove Trump from the office, right? That's the only thing we are concerned with, right?

this is the equivalent of asking "what if the knicks win the championship?"

So it was a rhetorical question then. Oops, I thought you were really wondering about the absolute worst scenario

How’s about this for worst that can happen: Trump wins, kills Obamacare (his stated goal because he hates Obama), COVID goes on to have a wave 3,4,5 etc (because that’s literally his policy). As vaccines and treatments are being tested but not available for everyday people (because that’s literally the republicans ideology). Now not only hundreds of thousands are dying (were literally on course to have 400,000 deaths by January because of Trumps policy) but now a few million Americans that recovered from covid are bankrupt because they cannot pay healthcare bills (again republican ideology). Country goes into another Great Depression (newsflash, it will!). Not sure which parts of this scenario are the most far fetched (they’re literally happening now because of Trump), Scary part is that this scenario is not THAT far fetched. But hey we would keep Trump in office, right? That's the only thing we are concerned with, right?

This is exactly the reason why I am going to exercise my right not to vote this election, again. Trump tried killing Obamacare, Biden has said he will do away with it if he gets elected.

FFS, just stop already. I am a little tired of this

Stick to Knicks, you are just wasting everyone's time.

What I would do if in charge would be another 15 day total quarantine. Things are ramping up— taking aggressive action is the right move.
djsunyc @ 10/12/2020 10:38 PM

the dumbest country in the world with the dumbest leadership.

That could be a complete economic disaster, especially considering that the government can’t even deliver a stimulus package.

Clean @ 10/13/2020 10:29 AM
This will never happen here but I think in a perfect world the way to manage this pandemic is to.

1: Create a real stimulus package similar to how Canada did. The 1.2k one time thing was never going to work.
2: Mortgage, Rent and Bill freeze.
3: Everyone goes on a 3 weeks quarantine where you only leave for essentials. Masks and social distancing are mandatory when you do.
4: Masks and Social Distancing is a mandate and not a suggestion. Failure to adhere to rules will be a stiff fine or a chance of being locked up for flagrant rule breaking.
5: Travelers from out of country is given a 1 week notice to get back to American before Quarantine. During Quarantine traveling is restricted. After Quarantine all out of country travelers must be quarantined before they can be released on their own.
6: There will be no in person schools or arena sports. I would allow at 25% capacity but once people start drinking they don't follow the mask and distancing rules.

My belief is that if you are strict for a short period of time and people follow the rules you can then relax the rules after the quarantine period if all travelers to America are held in quarantined before they can integrate with society. The general 3 weeks quarantine period is to make sure who ever has it will no longer be contagious. The 2 week travel quarantine worked wonders for Australia and New Zealand.

Would be worse if we start getting huge numbers

NY seems to be doing pretty well, even dealing with these “hot spots.”

A total quarantine is impossible anyway. People living check to check and tip to tip will once again be flooding unemployment. Remember how bad it was last time? That was NOT a total lockdown. Not even close. It took some people months to get their first unemployment payments.

And even if that wasn’t an issue, you will still have trouble containing the virus bc emergency workers will still have to work and they can’t quarantine and they, in some way or another, expose themselves to the public. Then when you open up in 2 weeks and the flood gates open and things end up getting worse because social distancing will be impossible at super-markets... and please don’t tell me how getting your food delivered is so much safer than you going yourself because it isn’t.

The only goal is to prevent healthcare system from collapsing as it is going on in Russia, Iran, Brazil, and other countries.
So it is herd immunity long term as it is the case with flu.
Treatments and vaccine will help but it takes years to make somehow effective.
Mostly it comes to personal responsibility.
And yes - rich will be better off as usual. That's why everybody want to be rich. :)
