Click here to view the TweetI am proud to say I was traveling for about 4 hours yesterday and only saw 3 people not wearing a mask. It is amazing how fast things change. At the start of the pandemic anyone wearing a mask would catch my attention. Now anyone not wearing a mask immediately catches my attention.
Looks like an election night electoral college map........
Couldn’t be clearer
Tells me we know little about this disease if a country that has abided by many strict protocols with much less population density is being hit this hard a year later

What strict protocols are you assuming they have in place?
South Dakota is getting decimated. 1 out of every 55 people have COVID and 1 out of every 1500 people are in the hospital with COVID. Ungodly alarming. They've got a lot of dumb dumbs leading and sheep to follow over the cliff.
In countries in Asia with heavy density - take Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore as examples, even Japan to a large extent - are thriving with normality. They understand what to do and it's a cultural thing. NYS has been pretty good but weddings, indoor restaurants, high school parties around Halloween have spiked our number.
Test, trace, wear mask, avoid indoor gatherings, wash hands. It's actually pretty straight-forward.
Don't be this lazy with your thinking

democratic hoax
open it up
these people have no empathy for anyone, especially health care workers who have to deal with these folks. want to make it political? fine, put your party affiliation on the ER check in form and be treated accordingly lol.

It seems like a week ago it was only 100k a day. The fact that the number is getting so much bigger so fast is not a good sign for things to come.

Briggs with all due respect this is bullshit!
This second wave in Europe is NOT coming out of nowhere… it actually is pretty simple.
1. we have been able to seriously flatten the curve, even bend the curve down to a relatively low Level in Spring/Summer... we did this with semi-Lockdowns (still were able to leave home but only in the "core family") with some exceptions like Spain and Italy who had to do full lock-downs due to the worse Situation there, wearing masks when in public and closed Schools/Kindergardens etc.
2. Summer was honestly pretty easy in terms of numbers AND meassures. We have of Course kept the mask wearing in public places, had no large Events (Sports, Concerts, no Octoberfest etc.) as well as restrictions on Restaurants and Bars.
3. We got complacant… you could really see that ppl started to not take the thing that serious anymore! Ppl went out partying again, met at Restaurants and bars and were generally travelling again inside the EU during summer… often times meeting up with the whole Family (weddings etc.) - this is were Things started to go up again slightly… during July, August... across the EU. Even the Amateur leagues started to plan regular Seasons again - can you imagine this foolery!
4. ppl kept that above mentioned behaviour now in fall as well… BUT now ist all done Indoors... this is an absolute horrible idea with this Virus obviously!
Now let me give you a quick example on my varsity bball team…
- in spring during the first wave we stopped practice for some weeks, then started again Meeting up in Groups of 5 everybody brought and used his own bball, no contact, in summer we began practice with contact again, now in October we are back to closed gyms…

Yes Dodger that’s my exact point. We don’t have enough information on this pandemic— it’s possible we could be stuck for years
Biden task force is talking 4-6 week quarantine. I’m ok with that but it’s gonna devastate many people. In the interests of the long term I hope it goes ok— but this appears to have a forest fire like action— one little glare could reignite the whole thing. But we all have to work together and if they say 4-6 week ban— I’m getting behind it for the good of the country.
My daughter ( who lives in austria) said that corona is much much worse now than when it first came out.

Sorry Briggs if I wasnt clear in my intent previously.
What I was trying to Show as … the actions taken in Spring in Europe (mostly Basic stuff like mandatory masks in public places, a 2-3 week span of limited access to Shopping Centers and such, contact Limitation to one Household) as well as the weather Situation putting most Things "outdoors" helped the EU to minimize the Virus Impact during the next 4-6 months enormously! This helped us all to not go nuts now with this rough Fall and Winter Season ahead.
Again… what I want to say is… NO we do understand that some basic things help quite well… exposure to big groups, no-mask wearing, indoor activities are not possible with this Virus when its at a Point like now… unfortunately we opened up too much again… Restaurants and bars were flooded with ppl again, ppl stopped wearing masks more again as well… and we even did Sports Indoors with contact… all of that is obviously not good within a pandemic.
Unfortuantely your daughter is right we are (on track) to be in a worse Situation than in Spring... based on the above mentioned…
Now fortunately we did lear quite a bit from the first wave.
For example… we do not have to stock up groceries like crazy... Shops do not have to be closed as Long as ppl wear masks going for your groceries will most probably not get you sick.
But going out partying… will most probably get you infected…
Meeting with a friend for a walk in the park will not get you sick... playing Basketball in a gym…. most probably will...
You see what I mean… it is not a mystery!
Actually some things are Pretty simple with that thing!
Ppl just have to behave accordingly! I celebrated my dads 86th Birthday with him alone at home (socially distanced and masked up) while his grandkids were saying happy Birthday at the door not even entering his house. To keep him safe! It sucks big time! Dont know how many birthdays he still has to celebrate with the Kids but I gotta Keep him safe!
Another thing… talking about lockdowns… I HATE that ppl tend to use this word as some clear cut and defined thing… the way Lockdown is used is to scare ppl… most countries have NOT had full blown Lockdown where you were only allowed to leave home for an hour or two to do groceries or go to a doctor (Italy and Spain come to mind).
Most countries had some "restrictions"... like do not meet in Groups of more than 5 ppl…
These meassures hurt some economic Areas (Restaurants, Bars, Cinemas, Events etc.) but MOST economic areas were not impacted this badly.
If you look at numbers at the FastMovingConsumerGood industries its a Pretty mellow/even thing compared to other years.
So please please please stop wielding that word "LOCKDOWN" like its some hammer destroying the economy by itself.
That said… guys hold tight during the next months and stay safe and healthy all of you!

BRIGGS, let's be very direct and honest. YOU don't have enough information on the pandemic. The Trump administration does not have the wherewithal to deal with it. Many countries and states do.
Pointing to a singular case with a lack of detail just makes you uninformed. You have mentioned Austria twice now with zero detail on what the country has done and what it is doing now; that's not how any of this works. If you'd like, please let us know what your daughter is going thru and what the gist of how the gov't itself has and is doing.

Martin—the protocols there are more stringent than here. I agree w dodger that it seems like they took their guard down in Europe but I’m not sure why such a drastic eruption in Austria. When my daughter goes to the grocery store there— they have workers who spray consumers hands w sanatizer before they enter the stores. You have to wear a mask— it’s exactly like US but I’d even say more stringent the way it’s explained. They have advantages because many areas are not highly populated so social distancing is easier. What’s alarming is their spike in the curve. It’s much more aggressive now than when Covid first emerged.
It’s getting bad again in ct as well. It’s concerning and I think another full quarantine might have to be utilized

Again, you are literally stating the same things over and over and over while waving your hands without actually stating anything concrete. Zero information.
What are the many strict protocols? "You have to wear a mask— it’s exactly like US" is utter BS because each state and county and town in the US has their own way of doing things. Midwest dumbfuck governors don't mandate masks, other states do but they don't enforce.
State some facts
Also, interestingly is this report which suggests possibly our immune systems worsen in winter months due to the loss of daylight, which may contribute to this second wave.
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/...
Also contributing to the second wave in Europe: Fatigue among people in stacking to social distancing etc (especially when governments encouraged them to go out and go to bars and restaurants over summer), weather being colder and damper, along with people being inside more, school starting again, university starting again plus seeding from tourism and countries being far too late to lockdown (think they thought they could avoid it, which is odd)
I’ve been there. My guess is Vienna is a shit show?
Not sure what % comes from tourism but it can’t be good.
Are people playing soccer again? In the stands? School and Daycare in tight proximity? Multi generational living under wine roof?
Light rail brings a lot of people from towns to work!
We know Asia doing much better and perhaps a better cultural acumen to stay distant?

Well this is a goddamn awful coda to this whole thing. But it does tell us something: Their gov't didn't put into place the correct protocols. When your restaurants and museums are open and no 100% masks worn in school, those are not strict protocols.
I don't have a full understanding of what is going on in Austria but it looks like they have a leader that is a mirror of Trump. Not enough science, too much stupid. Our country is suffering from a lot of stupid.
Let's not be shy, because of the incompetence of the Trump administration and the cuck sheep (thanks dj) we have in governors and state legislators in TX, FL, ND, SD, MN and lots of other places, the USA will need to go into lockdown too.
