Knicks · Would u give Christian Wood 3 years 66 mm (page 3)

ccinflushing @ 5/3/2020 3:44 PM
Maybe it's just me but if I'm going to offer someone that kind of contract, I'd like them to be a bit more proven .. I'd be more interested in Danilo G at that price point.

Just not sure about Wood at the price you're talking about given small sample size and his situation with Detroit. Don't think he's a great ball mover and I have some concerns about his defense.

You should be asking why this kid has been a bit of a head case and his ability to stick. I appreciate Briggs looking for guys that are on the rise. Thats the core of the game knicks are engaged with. Timmy and Randle were valid non franchise killer contracts of young guys with NBA talent. They were just not first option players. Thats not on them, its on knicks.
Wood has talent. its between the ears and giving him a long term deal is the issue. I'd go 16 per for two years with a team option if I trade Randle.

ccinflushing @ 5/3/2020 3:57 PM
Yeah I think 2 Yrs at $16Mn per with a team option is more palatable.

I’m not worried about the money. I think he can be a 20-10 player and play excellent defense with either Robinson or Wiseman. He stood up to play with any star 4 in the East. Remember we paid 75 mm collectively to Randle portis gibson ellington morris

His defense isn’t great, but ok.

I just like his scoring potential and yeah he played up to his competition last year.

I do worry about the money if the NBA is going to be disrupted next season- 2 seasons of huge disruptions in a row is going to seriously shrink the cap- you don't want to be holding any substantial long term deals when that happens.

Christian Woods is prob the best unrestricted free agent. I’m assuming A Davis et al is not available
He’s another level than other guys. He’s possibly a true franchise player. You don’t avg30-10 for a month in the nba by accident. You don’t block Joel
Embiid 3x in a Game by accident. I don’t want second tier castoffs from the Nets. I’d like to pay what it takes to get this guy. This is on Dolan — can he see the forest through the trees 1/22 years?

I can’t dismiss the buzz around him regarding his attitude either- we seem to bring out the worst in people who come the team! He might thrive with a team with a good culture, can we really offer him that though?

With the China/Morey incident and the quarantine, we won't know the answer for a while. But my gut tells me no, Christian Wood probably isn't getting a one year, $22 mil. We're one of the few teams out there with the ability to easily open significant cap space. Unfortunately, Detroit is one of the others. With Blake fading out and with two years left, they might feel desperate. I guess we'll just have to play it by ear when the time comes.

On the flip side, the pistons have nothing on their roster, if we match their offer, I think wood might pick us. Do we want to match their offer though? I’m not sure. Briggs was right years ago when he was calling for us to take a chance on Hassan Whiteside (very similar scenario), he might be right now. I’d just like a bit more info about him first

I might have agreed with you on Whiteside three years ago, but I consider him to be an empty stats guy. I think even Miami fans would agree with that. Do we match Detroit's offer? Depends on what it is. Wood put up good stats, but they were put up at the tail end on a booty squad. If it's short-term deal, then it's whatever. If it's a THJ special, then I pass.
Nalod @ 5/4/2020 4:48 PM
Briggs wanted to draft Whiteside. That guy was a bust.
Wood drafted has been a bust. How many teams he been with?
These guys needed time.
Some fans are ready to run Knox out of town and he is 20!
Frankie is 21.
Wood and WHiteside are rare projects that had the resiliance to stick. Is Wood a breakout story or bad contract waiting to happen?
martin @ 5/4/2020 5:08 PM
Whiteside was an excellent player at $1M per, Riley wanted to trade him exactly after he made $20M.

Woods has had exactly 10-15 good games?

He’s shown he had talent before. The issue was teams always looked at him as some scrub who was only temporary overproducing. However he kept doing it and getting better. It’s like Linsanity’ish. He has flaws on defense but can light it up, and fits what we need from PF.

ccinflushing @ 5/4/2020 7:11 PM
I would be interested in giving a Nerlens Noel / Mitchell Robinson pairing a look. That might be a truly awesome defensive pairing - a true Blockness Monster potential pairing. I think Mitchell could guard the stretch 4s, while Noel mans the C position. Not sure how the offense would look, but if surrounded by good 3 point shooters it can still work. Noel is unrestricted, on a minimum contract, and is still only 25. Could be a buy low candidate.
Nalod @ 5/5/2020 2:43 PM
This is fun. Briggs been a fanboy for this cat since he got drafted. Was also right about Whiteside but Hassan has many sides which Riley has all to well found out. Im not going to argue his talent. It is there and has been but its the other stuff. He has matured to string together some good samples which tells me the talent is there. Inconsistancy comes before consistency. Bet the ranch?
BRIGGS @ 5/10/2020 1:35 AM
Looks like salary cap is going to be lowered quite a bit next year — perfect tine to offer the full 4 year max contract @ 30 % to market
