I don’t get the PJ Tucker comparison. RJ is no where near his level of defense or 3pt shooting.
Iggy seems close but RJ is still not better than Iggy.
I think the best comparison for RJ is…………
RJ
He’s a unique player. Jack of all trades, Master of known.
I remember the media asking RJ in the off season several times during his career and his response is always the same. To work on his overall game. So to me he’s not shying away from the “Jack of all trades” label, he’s embracing it.
If that’s who RJ is then the coaching staff should use him that way, and Thibs is moving in that direction by switching up rotations during the game and letting RJ play with starters and a bench lineup. This also shows you that RJ might also be a prime candidate to trade for a specialty Star. A Jack of all type player is easier to find. We need subject matter experts.
I think RJ should attend Brunson footwork school. Now that would put RJ on another level.
I guess RJ is the only nba player not allowed to get sick. Kyrie, KD and Kawahi can take off on entire regular seasons with vaccine boycotts and made up injuries

Yeah, but look at the way Nets fans are crapping on Ben Simmons. The guys you mentioned perform. RJ performs sometimes. Ben Simmons just sucks. If RJ wants the same benefit of the doubt as Kawhi, then he needs to start performing consistently.

RJ has been good overall. Just not great. Knicks fans have been burned by so many dud first round picks last 30+ years (we had a lot of busts even going back to the Grunfeld/Riley days) they are trying to will RJ into busthood

Not a bad point. We have not had good experiences being patient as fans with yoot.
He looked great last season but off to slow start. That an indictment for a 22 year olds career or since we don’t know how it works out, we just protect our emotions with a worst case scenario?
Yup this thread was made a year ago and my thoughts haven't changed much. No it factor. Not a damn thing he's good at. He's still young so there's hope but that contract was a mistake.

Problem with RJ is not in his work ethic. Or that he needs to work on specific parts of his game. All players do so each off season.
For me, its his basketball IQ. Maybe he is still young and needs to continue to learn the game. Maybe he would have benefited from some
more years in college. However, I think that his mindset has been wrong since he began his NBA career. Someone has gotten in his head and made him feel as though he has to be "the guy". Maybe its the "Kobe" mindset. Problem is that he has yet to realize that he needs to be a sound NBA basketball player before he tries to be the next Kobe. We have seen game after game where he does not let the game come to him. Does not look to involve others when he is having an off game. Rarely reads the defense before making a move. Just has the mistaken idea that in order for the team to win he needs to score on every touch. The contract he just received does not help. Think it will continue to put more pressure on him to be the guy he mistakenly thinks he should be.

RJ hasn't been good overall. He's been OK. I posted his shot chart earlier and it's all red. The next level is consistency. I have faith in RJ, but you can't compare him to future HOFers and wonder why he doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt.

Good at what? Volume shooting at low eFG%? Going to his left?
Literally, what is RJ good at that would add up to an overall good? I need someone to help define and explain that.
I think it was Marci who was talking about deflections and how many Cam had per game and compared that to RJ.
RJ is literally in the bottom 2% or something per minute. And that SUCKS as a guard. It means you have zero quick burst and/or zero recognition, anticipation.
RJ is literally the opposite type of athlete than Grimes.
RJ is about to take the 'Bad Porn' moniker from Cory Maggette. Strong penetration, but can't finish.
I tell you, RJ closing in on Chuck Knoblauch territory

He’s so far averaged 15 and 6 for his career. Overall fg% has been 40%. Decent defender. The team has gone from laughing stock of the nba to playoffs and competitive since he’s been here. I know you hate the guy because he was the third overall pick but fact is he’s the second best player from that draft after Ja. Call me when Zion plays an entire season

You didn’t think over that response for very long. Read it back slowly and try it again but without the glaring errors and general cream puffery.

For what it’s worth RJ dominated last year after New Years. He’s probably more system player than we want but he’s excellent at getting to his spots. He has to learn to finish when he gets there though. If you look at Wiggins, he gets credit for turning his game around under ideal circumstances and being surrounded by shooters, and RJ needs to be follow that trajectory. While we can’t say RJ does any one thing exceptionally, if you look at the all around package you know there’s 29 other coaches who would be confident they can unlock him. He really seems like he will just need until age 25 to reach his full potential.

It’s not where he’s at, its a combination of his age and nba development he received before most people from childhood. So he gets to slide by on potential. But there’s a sliding scale since Father Time is undefeated.
What he’s good at? He not good at just one thing. He’s above average at everything plus he has size and length so he’s enter changeable, coachable. Groomed as a leader from day one. Some people are SMEs and others are Jack of all trades. Those types turn into leaders and SMEs are those old men at work who just want to perfect 1 thing. RJ superpower is that he can do everything. And when there are nights when 2 of those things are clicking, he looking like an all star. But because he’s not perfect at 1 think yet, his off nights look atrocious.
So you gambling on his future not his present. That’s why his contract is less than all his counterparts. He’s guarding the best players and can literally take over and close games. It’s just his lows are extremely low.
I believe when you are sick, your game naturally leans on what he’s good at and what he worked on will look suspect. He’s forcing jumpers because he knows he worked on it this summer and it was on a consistent level as we saw in summer league. But his sickness which results in lack of conditioning due to being sick, he doesn’t have the legs on his jumper right now. He’ll get it back and overall averages will increase.
I don’t know what is wrong with RJ but if he is sick, then sit him. Why is Thibbs having that kid out there shooting brick after brick, when we have a perfecting good SG in Grimes rotting on the bench?
