Knicks · 2021 NBA Free Agency (and around the league): Preview and Primer (page 6)

We picked up Mitchell's option! Knicks will have a long window to work on his extension. I think Robinson and his development are the keys to getting past Philly and Mil in the playoffs. Phoenix won Ayton's minutes throughout the finals (not sure about game 6). Knicks could have played it safe and made him an RFA, this way Knicks preserve max cap space.

I absolutely love Mitchell Robinson and we could've eliminated Atlanta with him because not only is he freakishly athletic but he's the Defensive Anchor to Tom Thibs NBA's #1 Defense and would've prevented Clint Capela from absolutely feasting against us.

And even if we wouldn't have eliminated Atlanta with Mitchell Robinson, he's a bigger loss than some like to acknowledge.

One thing is for sure. Remove Clint Capela from ATL and give NY Mitchell Robinson and they have 0% chance of beating us.

I hope to the basketball GOD's he's our longtime starting Center throughout the next 5-7 years because not only is he extremely talented @ only 23 years old but he's an electric PG away from becoming an All-Star of an NBA nightmare.

Knicks sign Lowry for 30, S and T for DeRozan at 30, sending Knox and Vildoza to the SAS. Sign Melo with 5 million MLE. I feel unsure about leaving Rose and Gibson off the squad.

I spent an hour last night researching DeRozan and Lowry friendship. The phrase "best friends in the NBA" came up a lot. About 48 hours until we know.

Good points. I forgot about Capela. Noel was great, but Robinson has the size to compete with those guys. One of the craziest things I read was an interview with Mike Woodson where he talked about how raw and poorly Robinson played defense at the beginning of his tenure as Asst. coach. This is after his rookie year when he had a top 50 ALL TIME defensive plus minus rookie year and led the league in block rate. So you have to wonder what's the ceiling if Woodson felt that way.

Not my favorite FA targets but hey...

C: Mitchell Robinson.
PF: Julius Randle (1x NBA All-Star).
SF: DeMar DeRozan (4x NBA All-star).
SG: R.J. Barrett.
PG: Kyle Lowry (6x NBA All-Star).

C: Obi Toppin.
PF: Carmelo Anthony.
SF: Quentin Grimes.
SG: Immanuel Quickley.
PG: Miles McBride.

Sign me up.

Because we'll be without Derrick Rose but we're pretty much replacing Frank, Knox, Elfrid and Bullock with Lowry, DeRozan, Melo and Grimes/McBride.

Top 2-3 Eastern Conference seed.

I sincerely hope we took Mitch’s option just to agree on an extension very quickly without he become RFA this summer and without having to match other team offer sheet.Because if that’s not the plan and if we don’t intend to give him an extension until next summer when he’s UFA, I’m afraid in that case he’s gone.

But the trade option should not be ruled out also. I sincerely hope that all of this is part of an elaborate plan and that the FO knows what they are doing.

While I don’t dislike or hate Mitch as Knicks center something just feels wrong (off) with Mitch and I will not be shocked if he stays or if he is moved quickly this off season (with his replacement already targeted or coming in return). Zero to base this on just worry about injury, maturity and zero improvement offensive skill wise.

Because Mitchell is a former second round pick. his max salary for next season is about 10 million. Knicks have to show him this is the place he should be.

Regarding development. read that article April Fools Basketball Gold. It's a peek behind the curtain and hopefully Mitchell can find some good people to support him.

DeMar DeRozan – believing Raptors president Masai Ujiri lied to him before trading him to the Spurs for Kawhi Leonard – said of Ujiri: “I have no reason to talk to him. At all.” Apparently, DeRozan felt that way immediately. He said he hung up on Ujiri when the executive called to deliver the trade news in 2018, as DeRozan detailed on “Club Shay Shay” with Shannon Sharpe. – via Dan Feldman @ NBC Sports

Well, I guess he's not taking the mle to go back to Toronto.

Likely this takes LaVine off the board next year too- they should make the playoffs

Curious to see how the Bulls manufacture enough cap space to make room for Lonzo. Maybe S&T?

You could be right. There are small pieces of evidence that support Derozan. Not clear on Lowry. S&T requires 3 year deals, which would surprise me. Not clear SA is taking back salary here to clear Knicks space. I think both players are each going to end up closer to 25mm maybe a little less. Not a huge market for them.

I see the Knicks also adding Richaun Holmes. Assume a little razzle dazzle to get the salaries to work.

Lowry
Barrett
Derozan
Randle
Holmes

McBride
Quickley
Grimes
Toppin
Robinson

Vildoza

Sims 2-way
Simms 2-Way(?) (when you read his resume, it makes you wonder if someone said — “get Simms” and they got Sims at 58. Runner up for Naismith Defensive player of the year. Led his team in points, rebounds and assists for two years…interesting player and more of a Thibs resume vs Sims, who is long and jumps really high.

This is simply not true.

I could be wrong but I think it's the same as with Jeremy Lin, FVT, and THT.

We brought Lin in as a free agent and we didn’t have his bird rights. Mitch has been here since day one and we have his bird rights which means he can get a contract in a free agency like any other free agent.

It doesn’t matter if someone is selected in the first or second round. The difference is that those selected in the first round have a rookie scale contract and become RFAs after the 4th season while players selected in the second round have different contracts but have to hit a free agency after the 3rd season to become RFA because after playing 4 seasons they become UFA.

Silver, like David Stern, will do whatever it takes to help the bulls even if it means adjusting the salary cap

Knicks just picked up the $1.8M team option for Mitch for next year. As of 1 Aug, the Knicks can extend Mitch's contract starting around $12M, I don't know how many years they can tack on.

If they do not extend Mitch this offseason, he becomes an UFA next year.

Good thread

smackeddog @ 8/1/2021 12:35 PM
What teams are left that would have interest in Schroeder? The loser/s of the Lowry sweepstakes? So that would be either the Heat, Pelicans, Craptors (though there were rumours of them talking trading Siakam for CJ McConnell)- any one else? (assuming ball to Bulls, CP3 and Conley staying home)

His attitude puts me off the most, but I'm curious who are point guard chasing rivals will be once the main players are off the board

knicks1248 @ 8/1/2021 12:58 PM
Why the Rumours about the knicks interest in Ball, they fail to trade for him at the deasline, and didn't offer him a contact the first chance they got..

I just think this FO is more likey to Low ball players as opposed to overpaying

Chandler @ 8/1/2021 1:05 PM
I am not feeling DeRozan. Wrong time line and too much overlap with RJ and Randle -- and yes i know DeRozan's game has evolved to more play creation. We need a SF who can create his own shot if necessary (sorry Reggie) but also who has a reliable outside shot and plays tough D

I can imagine Knicks being interested in Oubre, a player I've liked since Washington days. Yes he still has flaws but that's where there may be value too, if we think we can hide the flaws or improve them. I have a soft spot for players who play with confidence and hit shots in the clutch.

Still intrigued by Dennis but not my first choice. Guy plays with some swagger, and i can imagine the Knicks have some interest. That said, i am a bit more worried about him as it seems he doesn't really endear himself to teammates -- no matter where he is. Would prefer Jackson if we can't either sign or trade for an A-lister. I think the change in pg will have a huge impact on this team. Elf offered size and rebounding but was really a poor fit. Indecisive, slow with the ball and decisions. Defense was respectable on ball but he was constantly losing and chasing his man otherwise. I suspect the fanbase will grow to love whoever his replacement is.

Also not a Fournier fan. Nice enough player but the numbers people are mentioning are way beyond what i think he's worth. WOuld rather see us chase someone like Duncan or Oubre

Thibs seems big on loyalty and for that reason i imagine taj, Reggie and Alec are back, and maybe Nerlens -- though not Elf (loyal yes; crazy no)

Jimbo5 @ 8/1/2021 1:19 PM
Can Melo still play SF? The Knicks together with the lakers have interest in Melo. Im ok with him coming back i guess but he is definitely not a long term answer at the wing. I would rather go ofter Oubre and let Jonny Bryant and Kenny Payne work on his weaknesses. Im ok with bringing in both!
