So far so good this season. 3-1 is great despite the home loss against Orlando. One hole we still have is a big wing who can defend. Randle does is best guarding the bigger wings/stretch 4s and Barrett is developing into a nice wing defender. But we still need more when we play teams who’s strength is wing scorers. Harrison Barnes and Robert Covington are the type of names that stand out. Kings don’t look to be competing this year again and Portland could blow up later in the year. We need someone who can be a stopper but also provide outside shooting. Someone who can defend wings and bigs. Without Noel we are seeing Obi playing alongside Randle in smaller lineups and against some teams it works and some it doesn’t. Noels role should be more of a spot starter if Mitch is out and a situational backup, whereas we need a big wing who is more versatile defensively and open things up on offense. We have the Dallas pick plus the Charlotte pick which is looking likely to convey this year or next given their improvements. Maybe Burks, knox and a 1st for Barnes. But we need more big wings to give the best chance to beat good teams consistently.
I dont get this post. RJ Barret is 6'6 with a 6'10 wingspan, is about 220 lbs and so far has beaten up Beal in the preseason and Tatum so far in the regular 82. He's built like Ron Artest and he's staying in front of smaller guys. I thought his games against Edwards last year were especially telling. RJ is not a fluid or graceful athlete but he checks all the boxes starting with a desire to "be that guy"
So far moving Fournier into RJ's role of 2nd scorer and moving RJ into Bullock's role of defensive wing is looking great. Not sure Im seeing this glaring weakness yet. RJ is gonna get either Zack or DD so its another good "test" game
Overall our all perimeter D takes a step back with EF/RJ vs Reggie/RJ but we knew that would happen and its been easily worth it with what Fournier is bringing. Also he's a willing defender there also. I get he's not locking anyone down, neither is Kemba or Rose but they all get into it.
also Grimes/McBride are untested and raw but McBride reminds me a lot of Marcus Smart and Grimes reminds me a lot of Doug Christie... two really good defensive players who can do some other things

At least in the second half most of those corner 3s were because Mitchell was a.step slow in the defensive rotation. He has a tough job because he needs to keep the ball out of the paint as well， but with a little more burst in his step， he would be able to get there in time.
I'm not sure why that is- Robinson was the key to beating the 76ers. The Knicks offense stagnated but Robinson was able to keep it moving by getting offensive rebounds (Knicks scored on every possession he got one)，drawing Drummond out of possession，or on picks. The last two possessions when Randle scored on drives were also due to Robinson pulling Embiid out of position by lurking on the baseline.
Defensively the Knicks were a vise with Robinson out there. 76ers had some luck beating the defensive rotation by swinging the ball around to the corner. If Robinson can get there as the season progresses; either by anticipating the pass or improved conditioning，he will start racking up the blocked 3s again.

Both those comps sound right to me. Grimes really wasn’t on my radar prior to draft night. But he has a solid presence that I really admire.
Really eager to see these guys’ career trajectory.

I think Grimes and McBride are the missing links on where we need help defensively. McBride can be our best defender on PGs/Gs and Grimes can be a solid defender on SGs. I can't remember a time as a knick fan, where our present was just as promising as our future. Great moments in time to witness, beside the 73 championship years and 90s era. But even in the 90s, we never had so many draft picks and young potential players on the team and now in the G league, where we are known for producing nba talent. On top of everything, our Coach and Front Office are currently at the top of their game. Good times fellow knick fans. I think this season will be a surprise similar to last season.

Yeah, I think we're fine on the wings defensively. But we're missing that combo forward that can hang defensively on the bench. Someone who can hang with the likes of Harrison Barnes without getting mauled physically.
The team could use a 6’8” SF who is strong on defense and who can got a three. Knox has sufficient size and can hit the 3 but he obviously is bad on defense. I agree with you that it is a need. However, it is not our biggest need. Our bigger need is for Randle to play smarter and not force shots or fight against what the defense is giving him. We also need Mitch to get in better condition because he looks tired out there. We also need to work on our offensive cohesiveness. All of these issues should be fixed over time as the team plays together more. I think between RJ and Burks, we can guard the wings. It would be nice to have a true 6’8” defensive stopper but that is something to be fixed next summer unless the perfect deal appears at the trade deadline.
Tend to agree with original poster on key missing element being a very solid long wing defender.
Think RJ has been solid but don’t trust Thibs to use the 2 rooks who could help.
Also fear Mitch is always one fall away from major injury — just hits floor to often but Kudos to defense on Embid the other night.

Not sure what we really need has been established after winning 3 out of our 1st 4 games, and going 7-1 (including preseason) since adding Kemba and Fournier.
RJ seems like he is up to the challenge to become the 2way player he is craving to be

Harrison Barnes was the best case scenario for Knox. Now I’d like the real Barnes. Later this season he should be available for youth/draft compensation. He’s a good player who would be a great additional. Covington would be another.
