Knicks · Bullish on Deuce (page 6)

VDesai wrote:Ward and Childs were terrible PGs. Neither could penetrate or break down anyone with their dribble. The only thing either guy contributed on O was an occasional 3. They were mostly good on defense, but somehow constantly got backed down in the post by Mark Jackson. Of course we finally traded one of them for Mark Jackson who proceeded to stick the fork deeper in his back when he got here. I was hoping we'd sign RObert Pack when we signed Childs. Pack was fast and could penetrate and if he had him with Camby and Spree we could have really pushed the ball.

Wasn't that big on Pack, but I remember Sam Cassell was also a free agent at the same time they signed Childs. Don't know why they picked Childs over Cassell, but I remember being heated.
VDesai @ 12/22/2021 10:09 AM
I thought Cassell was traded. Actually pretty sure the Nets traded Pack for Cassell. Around that time in theate 90s Cassell was in virtually every blockbuster 8 player trade.

It's unfortunate but I think this scenario will likely happen next offseason:

Knicks do a S&T for Rick Brunson, Dallas gets Deuce and whatever else player they want from Rose, Kemba, Burks, Noel.

Well I believe Rick Brunson is a little bit too old for a trade. Don’t think he’s coming out of retirement any time soon 😂.

But his son on the other hand is a potential lead / alpha point guard we need.
I love deuce but Jalen Brunson is an nba starter and duece is a solid backup right now.

Duece looks like a 2 way scoring PG. Sims is an agile young version of Mitch. But I see he has some passing abilities I haven’t seen from Mitch. To me that’s important offensive IQ. Damn that dude can get up and appears to be a strong body and not injury prone like Mitch.

Yeah, not as tall but his picks are MUCH better than Mitch's.

We get a sugar rush with Deuce’s Westchesters games. His NBA game is not the same. Kid is young, knick are using the gleague. Its all good.

Is Thibs gonna cut off Mitches mom’s pinky if he shoots from 5 feet or more?
Sims is 23 and has no offensive shot either and apparently no emotions on the court.

THe Videos from Westchester show McBride gets a lot of open lane and pts in the paint. Thats not happening in the NBA.
Knicks have no conspiratory reason to hold him back. When he ready, we need him!

Is he ever going to get a chance to play again or is Thibs still hung up on proving everyone wrong about Burks being a full time pg?

It makes me so sad that he was not ready to play well consistently when he got the opportunity. He might not get another legit chance for a long time depending on injures and covid. I can't really blame him though. Thibs gave him no minutes outside of garbage time until we got hit by covid. I just hope he has a Quick/Obi like jump next season.

What? You expected Thibs to give McBride minutes before all the guys got COVID? Rose, Kemba, IQ getting minutes.... and then what?

Kid is young and he got a chance even with Covid. He had some moments but lets be real he has not shown enough to stay and take a spot. Why do we “blame” Thibs for his lack of minutes when he has not sustained other than one start. Why do you think he deserves more? We are one game from .500, not throwing in the towel on the season are we?

I don’t love Burks at PG But that is because Kemba and DRose are out.

All of those are good questions. I agree he has not shown enough to take a spot which is why I was sad that he was not ready yet. The reason why I partially blame Thibs is because Thibs does it to an extreme. Remember the preseason where the kids got no time because all Thibs cares about is winning. Every other team in the NBA gave their kids some time during preseason. How did that work out for us? All that winning in preseason meant nothing.

One reason I thought he deserves more time than he has gotten is because one thing we can always count on from him is hustle, effort and defense. For awhile we where bottom of the barrel for defense. So he would have definitely helped there. The main reason though is because our team is extremely streaky. There were times this season where Quick and Kemba were shooting extremely poor for long stretches. Why not give McBride a chance during a game or two for one of those stretches. Maybe he play bad like the guys who were slumping but maybe he gives you a performance like his 2 good games.

People keep throwing out that .500 number but that does not impress me. How many easy games have we lost? How many times do bad teams have their best player missing only for us to still lose? How many times have we looked great vs really good teams? .500 is a nice stat but it lacks context. Context is needed even more in a year like this that has been ravaged by covid.

That info is really bad. The Lakers also did not have Lebron and are not good vs actual good teams. I agree that the year is not over yet and while not probable we can still turn this thing around.

Thibs played the vets cause of the shortened training camp and preseason, not because he wanted to win.

It turned out he was right, team chemistry was an issue for the first 20+ games, especially the starting unit.

I think its safe to say that only about 10% of G league players are NBA ready

Just think, Teams have been calling guys out of retirement/out of the league to fill roster spots as opposed to using G league players.

I specifically remember quotes of him and the vets saying all they care about is winning. I'll try to find them.

You know once we hired Thibs it's win or nothing, the preseason was only 4 games and we had 2 key additions that needed to build chemistry.

Young guys need to be ready and play consistent to get minutes over VETS especially on a playoff contender.

How many games has this team been fully healthy, we have had key guys out all season, including the benching of Kemba.

No team has been excluded from Protocols and Injuries and (IMO) ROSE and NOEL was a major part of our success and both have missed double digit games already.

From Randle about Thibs coaching style:

"Everything’s important if you’re competing and you want to win. I understand that (preseason) is used as time to establish rhythms and figure out rotations or whatever it is. But that’s really not who we are," Randle said Wednesday. "Our goal is regardless of preseason or practice, whatever it is, we compete and build the right habits to win; give ourselves a chance to win every game. Preseason or not, it doesn’t matter to us."

From Thibs when talking about how much time vets got in preseason and his intensity:

"Everyone has to be themselves. There’s a lot of different ways (to coach). I’m not saying my way is for everyone. I know my way is for me," Thibodeau said Wednesday. "And everything matters to me, everything that we do. I’ve seen guys who are very successful doing it another way. That’s the beauty of this game. It’s played a lot of different ways. There’s a lot of different styles. There’s a lot of great coaches out there.

"I think for us, we’re an organization that’s building right now. We want to get established. So our fight continues every day. I love the fight in our guys."
