"Racism?"
Nalod @ 1/11/2022 4:33 PM
Yes, Racism for some.
You think human nature has changed in the years since Jackie Robinson broke into the major leagues?

But lets be real, not all fans boo for the same reasons. There might be some elements of jealousy that goes into bad places. Young athletes making crazy good money should be able to take what is being dished out.
THats part of the game and profession. I though Randle did not handle it well. Deflect to the teams performance would have been better.
This is entertainment.

Rookie @ 1/11/2022 4:34 PM
Great, the Knicks are a dysfunctional clown show again. On a night where the Knicks featured ball movement and team play, Randle and his 2 points becomes the story.

Most Knicks fans don’t boo. The ones that do are either drunk and/or are Wall St douchebags paying $2,000 a ticket

BS, the teams gets booed when they struggle and are not playing hard

How do you determine if someone is playing hard or not?

- In Baseball NY Fans tend to boo if a guy tends to strike out several times in key moments - does that mean the player is not playing hard or just that the pitcher was better?

- In Football NY Fans tend to boo if a QB throws a key interception or is sacked multiple times for losses or if the play calling does not "go for it" in key situations such as on 4th down and a few yards - are the players not playing hard?

- In Basketball NY Fans tend boo when a player misses a number of shots or has bad turnovers and the team falls behind by a significant scoring gap. Does this really have anything to do with how hard a player is playing?

I tend to believe that fans who boo are (in general) either living/reacting solely in the moment for their own gratification or just not that knowledgeable about the up and down nature of sports performance/competition.

I’m not a boo guy but isn’t booing a sign of dissatisfaction of a result?
Let’s say fan A has spent 85$ a seat for his tix( brought his two kids) food transportation etc
and he’s done This for years— a loyal fan who has spent his own hard money time and effort to enjoy his team. And now let’s factor in a team like the Knicks — who over a Kong multi year period of failure has a moment of momentary success( like last year) see a guy that may be a franchise player with other possible top guys. He comes into the season thinking well my time has paid off. Now I can enjoy basketball like some other fans do BUT it simply does not materialize. We lose a series of home games to bad teams by bigger margins. The guy who we were counting on has unfortunately regressed— so we hear some boos for dissatisfaction. Is this abnormal or wrong? It’s easy for a player or coach making multi millions to say @ hey wtf” are you barking at chump? He’s going back to his mansion and the guy and his kids have to fight the traffic in the dead of cold nights to make a train to go home after watching the 5 th poor result in a row.

Players and coaches who are on the other side of the fence and really they could personally care less if you and your kids had a good time or not. And that’s ok but don’t talk sht about the fan on the other side. You get paid a sht load of Monet to be professional about your actions.

I understand your point, but fans are booing regardless of if players like Randle give them the thumbs down or finger for it.

I dont think you do but no big deal. Players and coaches get paid big to act professional. Fans also have to act a certain way. But booing in terms of disappointment whether its long term based short term based whatever--its part of sports????? Always has been always will. So the players coaches--they can deal with moments of fan discord.

No I perfectly understand but just don't agree. What you are missing is that poor fan behavior / fan negative reaction at games (i.e. Booing and Shouting profanities) is not limited to Professional Athletes. For instance college athletes are also subject to this behavior (and at a much lower per ticket and family cost mind you). College Athletes are not paid big money - so does that mean they do not have to act professionally when fans are booing and shouting profanities at their performance?

IMO poor sports fan behavior and booing is similar to audience heckling a comedian. What about the impact to other fans? Why is this viewed as acceptable (only in sports)? Should people go to a Broadway show and boo the actors or orchestra if they don't like it? Should they boo performance at rec or travel level youth sports? Group stand up and heckling at the Symphony or Opera?

I do not boo and I am not saying I condone it, but sometimes I understand it..

About 3 years ago, pre pandemic, I went to a comedy show in Atlanta featuring Martin Lawrence as the host, a few comedians and JB Smooth (Curb your enthusiasm) as the closer. The comedians did their routines and were funny for the most part. Some more than others. Then, JB Smooth walks out and grabs the mic. It was clear within the 1st 5 mins that he was freestyling. The jokes, if you can call it that, were weak. there were awkward pauses beyween each one and he came off as unprepared. It was as if he thought because of his name, he could get some laughs by just winging it. The audience gave him 7 minutes before the murmuring turned into loud boos!! I didn't participate in the boos but my wife and I were disappointed in his performance.

JB challenged the crowd by telling us how funny he is and how he killed the stage in Ohio or somewhere. The crowd continued to boo and complain about how much they paid for tickets. He cut his set short and walked off as we were walking out.

He may have "killed" in another state the night before or the year before, but that night in Atlanta, in front of a paying audience, it was easy to see that a professional comedian that we paid good money to see didn't care enough to have an actual set, and was unprepared. Like I said, I did not participate in the booing, but being there that night with ticket stubs in my back pocket, I understood.

People have booed entertainment 1000s of years before we were born.

Like I said, boo the performance vs. booing the man. Randle was wrong to address it. If the lower level fans got ugly, you know, personal then I get thats another issue.
The boo’s vs SAS were muted after a bad play. Knicks were up. Randle looks like he don’t give a phuch.

And I’m willing to venture to say a majority of Knicks fans don’t boo. Does it happen? Sure, MSG has been consistently sold out at capacity 18,200 fans sitting in the seats for decades even when the team was obviously horrible

If Randle never wants to hear boos he can go play in some podunk market in the West in an empty arena. There’s a reason he came here after LA he wants to be a star

Yes, of course, nothing's changed since the Civil War, actually. According to our fabulous POTUS, you're either Abe Lincoln or Jefferson Davis. Who were both white people, apparently.

People can't just be drunken attention whores booing at an NBA game. They have to be booing because they are racists being forced to pay ridiculous prices to watch black men play basketball.

I am not in denial that racism -- of all "types' -- is still here. Having been around...ahem...a while, I know for a fact it is not what it used to be, not even close. That said, let's continue with awareness and progress and address it. Won't get any deeper than that here, don't feel it's a constructive place to do so.

What my eyebrow raised reaction was to was a small part of a previous quote of mine being taken out of context and a vague comment on "racism" being attached to it. Nothing I said had the least bit to do with that.

Referring now to my previous post, I would boo KD, KP, or LaBronna. Two black guys and a white guy. I would boo them because they are arrogant douchebags and for no other reason.

What they got in common? Chips!!!!
Chips make you gracious. Chips enable humility. Jeter im guessing took it as "The performance was being booed".....Again, just my opinion.
Randle did not handle it well. 1st path back is to play well. Jeter, Riveria and Ewing are HOFer's. Eli will be debated but he lead two superbowls vs Patriots so thats kinda golden.

It helps that Jeter and Rivera won early. Jeter was a rookie and Rivera was very close to being a rookie when they won their first World Series. The boo birds don’t really come out after a player wins a championship, or 3 very early on

Randle passing was exquisite last night. Im in the thought that chemistry of deferring to RJ and EF is not instinctive for him this season. RJ been sick since December and EF banged up. We also asking Randle to evolve his game to now determine when to be the alpha and when to get others going. Last year it was put your head down and go!
Im over simplifying but its a theory. Randle was frustrated a month ago with EF for not making his cuts and RJ was sick THEN got covid. Fans took Thibs comment about RJ not putting int he work as being content but when your sick you gotta rest.

Doris Burke is annoying but she bought up a good point that knicks were exactly .500 and finished on a 16-4 run last year. Nobody saw that coming and .500 was a gift at that point. Few were saying “blow it up!, dump XXX”.

I”ll take RJ as the upgrade to BUllock at SF.

Somewhere in NOLA a fan is posting “Should we have traded down to get RJ?” Had we done that we’d be “Typical knicks!”

randles passing in the lane was really quite good last night. Not perfect but the rhythm and instinct is evolving. He can feel the doubles.

Burks plays at SF in his career. when he stands next to RJ he looks like a PG. RJ is a young beast. I compared a young RJ to a young Oscar Robertson physically as a 19 year old. No, he won’t be a near GOAT like Oscar was but he is a handful and physically imposing at 21.

Randle took a fair contract and the knicks paid him not for his ceiling but for this building block. RJ becuse of his age might be our cornerstone.

Mitch haters should not worry about his good play. He is an asset for the trade deadline for at team willing to pay him. I have no idea what we do with him but winning with him is fun, and his value goes up. Might sting to watch him walk for nothing but thats life in the big leagues.

Salary cap situations are not exactly set in stone but it looks like only Detroit, Orlando, Spurs will have cap space to sign an UFA like Mitch.

I just don't see Mitch leaving unless it's an outsized payday sign and trade that also benefits the Knicks on the receiving end of things.
