Friend Leon/WWW likely to have discussed Jalen’s market value with him and his dad.
What are Dallas choices. Let him or FInny Smith go?
FOr the record, KP makes 50% more than Randle per season. Dallas needs to look at big picture. Brunson as a starter next to Luka? If so thats a 20mm per year player. Is he that good and is he right for that role? Can’t pay him that money to be a back up.
Logially we trade Redish and IQ for Brunson. Thats a great haul for them and we get a starting PG.
Is he athletic enough to be a starter and defend to Thibs standards?
IQ fans, who do you like better? Him or Brunson?

Why do they have to let either go? Am I missing something or do they not own both players bird rights? Can't they jsut pay whatever the market bares?

I think they've traditional been a tax adverse team and no one believes they'll dip their feet in that deep for Brunson. Also, signing Brunson would make it tough to upgrade the roster for a few years out. That said, Dallas has never had much luck attracting free agents for whatever reason. That history does put some pressure on them to try and keep Brunson.

Or they move Fournier for an expiring contract and they can then chase Brunson in FA. No need to give up young talent.

Its the same thing. What is the expiring contract? Who wants EF for expiring cap?
Expiring contracts are not as valuable as they once were.
Brunson is unrestricted? Not many teams have cap and those that do have a need for him?
I’d have traded The charlotte pick, Knox and IQ for Brunson if I felt he was our starting PG. We can’t keep all young players. Im not sold on IQ long term and at some point needs to be paid or traded. I like the kid, but we have to use our depth at some point to consolidate. Grimes off at 6-5 gives us what IQ does well with better defense. IQ as playmaker is his future rise in value.

There are a couple. One version I heard was Fournier to the Cavs for Ricky Rubio and a 2nd. There are other scenarios. The thing that works in the Knicks benefit is FA this summer is actually really bad. Maybe the worst it’s been in a decade. So trades to improve make more sense.

During the last FA period, Fournier was simply the statistically best player the Knicks could possibly sign after none of the premium players signed here. He's an analytics wonderkind.

Trading Fournier must be a low priority unless the trade involves a significant talent coming back (e.g. Randall, Fournier, ++) for someone who is an upgrade (say, Brunson).

Otherwise there's no reason for a fire sale.

As an aside, I love Rubio as a player but that ship has sailed for the Knicks. Nothing is more regrettable than the Knicks having the opportunity in previous years to acquire Rubio or Rhondo or...

We need to stop waiting/anticipating a perfect PG and simply get someone competent. Makes me crazy that the same old narrative plays out year after year after year.

Rubio is an expiring contract, if they move both Fournier and Burks they would have $20 million in cap space to offer Brunson.

If the plan is keep Randle it makes sense long term because Brunson can work off of Randle unlike Kemba.

Brunson/Rose
Grimes/IQ
RJ/Cam
Randle/Obi
Mitch/Noel

And they try to run it back again.

Even if the move isn’t to keep Randle it doesn’t hurt

Brunson/Rose
Grimes/IQ
RJ/Cam
Obi/Semanic
Mitch/Noel

JB has skills, but I’d be happy if we never sign another player under 6’4” ever again. And definitely would hate to see us overpay.

Also, looking at a Mavs board, they don’t seem like they’d be overly upset to lose him. With mention of him being undersized, and exposed in the playoffs. That’s from reading just a small sample though.

I agree. If we got Brunson on a decent contract that is fine but I would not overpay for him. He does have physical limitations and I fear after a year we will still be arguing that we need a long term solution at the point. Plus, I like McBride and think he can develop into just as good a PG in two years.

He's putting up numbers similar to Lonzo but on a winning team. He will get paid.

wargames @ 1/30/2022 10:52 PM
I like him. If they can get him for around 20 Mil, do it. He’s very FVV/Kyle Lowry ish and that is what you need from winning PG in this league. Plus he was part of that great Villanova run and all of those guys know how to win, even if their skill level isn’t NBA worthy. They been to the top twice.

I don't see them trading him either unless its for someone better under contract. These Knick packages are shit and make no sense

Homer Simpson school of fanboy trade dreaming

The best part of Mike Francesca’s show would be in the early 2000’s when all they talked about on WFAN was baseball and delusional Mets fans would call in with asinine trades they thought were realistic like Rey Ordonez and Steve Trachsel for prime Barry Zito

Mark Cuban is calling the shots. If he wants to keep Brunson and/or Finney Smith he has zero point zero issue paying the luxury tax. Dolan had no issue paying luxury tax for rosters that won 20 games why would Cuban do do for a playoff team?

If you want Brunson this is the only trade that makes sense: Randle, Burks and picks for Brunson and Porzingis

It sounds like it it happens, it will be through FA

Knixkik @ 2/3/2022 10:04 PM
Overall, Fischer says the "Knicks are very engaged in trade conversations. They could go in a number of different directions. Not in terms of buying....seems pretty clear they are focused on creating further financial flexibility to pursue Jalen Brunson this summer

——————————

My guess is the Knicks are content waiting until this summer if it’s as simple as clearing out Walker, Burks and Noel in guaranteed money to get to Brunson’s contract number.

Brunson seems ok but I keep thinking this is the basketball version of beer goggles because we want a pg in worst way

Brunson 20 mill really?

Some said the same thing about Vanvleet last year too.

The speculation is the Mavs won’t pay luxury tax to resign Brunson and Finney Smith. Do these people know who Mark Cuban is?

Thats right. One might correlate a baseball pitcher would duplicate his performance regardless of the team he played for. FVV on the knicks might be a different thing altogther.
One never Knows really.

The man who let a Championship team fall apart to avoid paying the luxury tax last time.

We don’t know what Brunson will cost until we see them in the playoffs. Experts say he will be targeted defensively, if he gets wrecked and they get knocked out early Cuban will definitely let him go, if they make it to say the WCF, Cuban will probably pay him. A more realistic goal for the Mavs is the Semi Finals and Brunson’s individual performance being the best indicator if Cuban will pay him or not.

FVV and Brunson are obviously different types of PGs but their per 36 numbers and per 100 possession are in the range of similar. FVV better 3point shooter and started more games. Bruson better handle and better at getting to rim and midrange and eFG%.

Some times it is about projecting out a bit with Brunson. Dude has been playing next to Doncic a long time

$20mm would have been fine. People here wanted him for the max
