Knicks · I wrote that Brunson would ultimately get a max contract (page 2)

What are you guys smoking? Brunson might get $20 million a year but he is not getting the max. The guy is solid but he also has a lot of weaknesses. Mainly he is limited defensively due to his height and short arms. I would pass on Brunson (unless we could get him for under $18mil a year) and simply stick with Quickley as the starter.

Briggs was right, Brunson did have a mini breakout here.

Do I think he'll get a max? Some of that is going to be push/pull on what other options that Mavericks have. Do I think he's worth a franchise max? No. Do I think he's worth a market max? No. Do I think he's worth a "street max" ( i.e. basically the amount he'd get without his full Bird Rights implied)? Then that's the deeper and more complex question here.

"Street Max" type contracts are often conditional to a franchise's circumstances given the time and place.

Andre Igoudala's last contract with the Warriors can be seen in the vein of a practical "Street Max" principle, even though it was not an actual max type contract. The team didn't know how much longer it would have Durant and they wanted to push that contender window a little further even though they understood they'd have to meter Iggy all season long to save him for the playoffs. Many Street Maxs are horrific though, they are really ugly contracts that only have value for a GM looking over his shoulder to save his job for another 3 months.

I don't know why my old friend Briggs here is getting hate for his touts. He loves this team probably more than anyone here. I love Briggs, I love his passion for this team and I love what he brings to this forum. Honestly there's very little left tethering me to this forum anymore and Briggs is a big reason why I still drop in.

If Julius Randle, that crybaby slug, loved the Knicks as much as Briggs loves the Knicks, this team would have made the playoffs because then Randle would have actually played with purpose and passion and relentless spirit.

Do I think the Knicks should go after Brunson? Let's see what he does the rest of this post season and let's see how the market shapes out in the offseason.

Some of you guys here, not all, but more than a handful, need to separate a poster's Knicks talk outside of their non Knicks talk that ends up on this forum. Agree to disagree and move on, don't be a passive aggressive needling harpy about it. No one is here wants to be a fly on the wall to some fucked bad marriage counseling session.

Briggs, there are two things that universally true in this life.

1) I have a lot of love in my heart for you brother.
2) I have questionable taste.

HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. Sometimes I just kill me.

BRIGGS @ 4/24/2022 8:42 AM
The Knicks can offer Brunson the keys here---cant do that in Dallas plus a super hefty contract that they would need massive financial wheelings to make it work. It would have to be Brunson wanting to come here and a lot of other stuff happening right. But there will be a team 1 of them who will simply give him a max.

Be wary if players that show out in contact years - like Julius randle.

There should be performance metrics tied to every contract past rookie contract that is tied to team performance. Something like 50% of the money should not be guaranteed...

Vmart @ 4/24/2022 10:46 AM
I’m not sold on Brunson. I would pass as Quickly and McBride can do the same. It’s just Knicks really haven’t given them a chance to shine like other teams do for their young players. The player we need to be targeting is Zion.
Philc1 @ 4/24/2022 12:14 PM
Cuban is going to overpay to keep Brunson. Big reason is Luka can’t stay healthy plus Cuban doesn’t care about luxury tax
Kemet @ 4/24/2022 8:29 PM
Brunson's performance vs Utah Jazz D.Mitchell & Conley has been outstanding in the tied series 2-2.
Having PG-Dinwiddie play-maker leadership in the back-court along side of Brunson has turned Brunson performance into a MAX contract player.
We all remember PG-Russell (D.Lo) outstanding performance as a Nets having PG-Dinwiddie alongside of him in the backcourt to take the Nets to the 2018-19 playoffs.

The Knicks STUPID FO should've signed FA PG Dinwiddie last offseason, instead of signing Fournier who plays the same exact position as RJ Barrett, Burks, Grimes, and Cam Reddish (Big Guards).
The Knicks roster did not need Fournier having Barrett, Burks, and rookie Grimes.
Last season Knicks got rid of 4 PG in Payton, Rivers, Frank, and Smith Jr..
This past season Knicks roster of PG were Old Man D.Rose, Kemba (Knees), and Rookie McBride.
Yes! The Knicks FO off-season decision-making turned a 4 seeded Knicks team into a 11 seeded Knicks team.
Somebody or bodies got to get FIRED !!!

this would be a terrible max contract.
EwingsGlass @ 4/25/2022 9:55 AM
Shocked if he gets more than FVV. FVV had more track record and a championship ring when he got 20m per. I think you are looking at quality starter contract and not a max contract.

Consider this - FVV has a 21MM contract for 22-23 and then a player option for 22mm in 23/24. Is FVV going to pick up that option or test the 2023 FA market (along with everyone else)?

Jalen will get paid this summer, but a max contract doesn't seem likely.

You have to consider that FVV took a bit of a discount at the time because he wanted to stay. I remember reports that said it was the reason why teams like the Knicks backed off of their pursuit off at the tail end. That said, all the teams out there with major cap space are teams that wouldn't appear to have interest in Brunson (Detroit is a bit of a wildcard in terms of their plans).

Randle has a breakout season and some Knicks fans crap their pants that he got a below max extension. Brunson has a breakout stretch and they’re all for him getting the full max. I promise some will also be the first with the tar and feathers if he came here and had a bad stretch.

Don't see Brunson getting a full max. The Market hasn't really developed for that. But who knows? Things could play out differently

But the willingness to let down his guard during interviews? No, that wasn't passed down from father to son. Which makes Rick Brunson the best person to ask about Jalen's pending free agency.

"We've got to figure out if Dallas wants him. Not words," Rick Brunson says. "Ain't no discount. So don't put it on us. Don't tell me you love me. Show me."

THE NEW YORK KNICKS, a franchise with deep ties to the Brunson family, and the Detroit Pistons are expected by league sources to pursue him. Others could emerge.

Mavs governor Mark Cuban has stated he plans to re-sign Brunson and is well aware the price tag has become significantly more expensive, which would push Dallas well into the luxury tax. The Mavs have Brunson's Bird rights, so they can give him a five-year deal while other teams are limited to four-year offers. Dallas would not have salary-cap space if Brunson leaves, so his departure would create a gaping void.

Dallas could have signed Brunson to a four-year extension for as much as $55.5 million before the season, but the Mavs didn't offer it then nor did they engage in negotiations with Brunson's representatives. He was coming off a disappointing first playoff series of his career, as former Mavs coach Rick Carlisle drastically cut Brunson's minutes in the final few games of the seven-game exit against the LA Clippers.

"It sat with me all summer," Brunson said at the start of training camp.

Nor were the Mavs willing to make that commitment midseason, when Brunson had transitioned from sixth man to starter and was thriving. An extension would have handcuffed the Mavs from including Brunson if a trade for a star materialized. Dallas offered the extension immediately after the Feb. 10 trade deadline, when Mavs forward Dorian Finney-Smith signed an identical deal.

"I told him once the season is started, that's it," Rick Brunson says. "I told the Mavericks, 'Once the season is started, there's no contract talk,' and I went back against my word. In January, I thought he did enough where he deserved [the extension]. I said, 'Hey, take the money, man.' He wants security. He wants to live here. And they declined.

"He didn't turn s--- down. Y'all declined first. When y'all came back to him, we said, 'Hey, we just want to finish out the season and go from there.'"

Good find. Thax for reposting. Its one of many things to keep an eye out on. Detroit wants mitch too?
Mavs loses cap space if they don't resign him. They are prime for sign and trade. Brunson gets 5 years too. Would he have taken the 55mil?
We in the same boat with Mitch. Are their trade values equal?

Neither is a star. Not looking to pay either as one in my never humble opinion. Mitch is not the cause for our subpar season but he is not the solution either. Im not the chess player on these FO moves but my mind wonders if Brunson can unlock a better chemistry for our talent. Jules has been All NBA. RJ is still just 21 stud in the making. Fornier is elite streak shooter. Can Bunson unlock more potential? Does Mitch gone open up a unfillable gap?

If we went after Brunson, we have to move Fournier, there's no way you can play those two and have a decent defense. Maybe Dallas would do a Fournier plus their pick back or one of our young guards for him?
