Waiving Taj was an indicator we weren't going to pull off a sign and trade (otherwise I think we would have just kept him). Didn't really see why Mavs would be super interested in a sign and trade at this point, as they have expiring for the same amount as they'd get in a trade exemption, and they wouldn't want to take back Fournier as I think they want to reduce salary. Brunson's on vacation, so Monday is the day he can do the medicals and actually sign.

They have Timmy. And maybe we still want EF. Fans have their own opinion.
And he might be trade chip. Depends on whether he played to his contact opinon.

Plus, as much as people have/will criticise them for losing Brunson, they have already kind of sorted out his replacement- they traded for Dinwiddie, Tim Jr will be back and they signed Wood. I do think they'll be fine

Ha, I love this kind of stuff

At the end of the day the kid out played his contract offer and dallas lost this time. I would gather the rumors of him to NY were strong to scare any team away for a trade and also he became a big part of making conf finals so its not like they got nothing out of it. we don’t know what was offered to them as trade.
……and we did not have a deal for them either.
Make the conf finals you don’t get lambasted in the media.
Timmy returns and Dinwiddie is a pretty good player on a good contract for now.
Knicks got a solid player and gave up acceptable assets to clear out cap.
Fans often but a a big price on picks. Bunson was well worth the 11th by itself.

“They’re getting somebody who creates his own shot,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said. “Amazing midrange game. Ninth in the league in taking charges. Great guy. Great in the locker room. Great in the community. Supported the organization. A good kid.”

Good for Cube. Sets a good tone for recruiting than being a dick. You want people to come to dallas, talking bad never helps. Privately he and the FO might have messed this up but it happens when guys out play the value and then become free. At the same time, this kid was destined to be a knick given the family ties. Why fight it?

At the same time we payed Mitch market value and perhaps upheld a promise we would. That also matters. once the money is done, familiarity can and does matter as does clarity for his role and the vision of how it plays out. And yes, if he can live up to his contract he is a trade chip going foward. Same for Jalen. Not saying we do but if it comes down to it you do it. He knows it. its a business. These are not children.

So our off season was we kept a starter we valued and got another we really needed.

Do we have enough cap space to sign Brunson? Just wondering if the hold up is money related. I assume he has passed his physical by now and contract language should all be agreed upon

Yep, once the Burks trade went and Taj was waived. I saw some reports that an announcement was expected as soon as today.

Whew, I was getting worried we were trying to move Cam for more cap space.

I think you’re spot on with all of these things that go into it that most people don’t think of. These are people they are dealing with. I am excited to see what will hopefully be a starting lineup of Brunson, Grimes , Barrett, Randle and Mitch with a bench of Rose, IQ, Fournier, Toppin and Hart. There’s enough continuity for good chemistry but a couple of added pieces. The starting lineup doesn’t have any obvious holes and the bench should be one of the strongest in the league.

smackeddog @ 7/12/2022 2:44 PM
Man, is this signing ever going to become official?

That SL absolutely depends on how RJ and Randle adjust. Brunson-Grimes connection should be great given Grimes' shooting. Brunson-RJ could be complete dynamite if RJ can stay consistent from the 3 and if Thibs comes up with some plays that allow for RJ to drive off of a Brunson kickout if the D plays him tight at the 3 point line. Ditto for Randle. Brunson - Mitch should be all that we have been waiting for. Think Trae-Capella. It's going to be sick. Best bench in the league sounds about right too. IQ-Fournier can be huge

It's official at last! Done with cap space

I haven’t cooked bacon since this thread was created. Got a shirt that needs ironing too.

Mitch's deal is similar. $17M first year, $15M year 2.....

I dig it...2 years down the road, you're looking at a steal of a contract!

Yep, we're rolling the dice on the first 2 years being an overpay, but hoping that means the last two are an underpay- reasonable gamble since we're over the cap anyways. The fact there are no trade kickers etc would indicate the plan is maybe to move him in 2024 (which coincides with Hartenstein expiring- I guess we decide then which we prefer going forward)

You leave the door open to trade him and its easier. Maybe we draft a stud, maybe trade for one. either way because all this is far more fluid than we ever think. Same with Brunson. Once Keels loses his baby fat and gets into shape, or Deuce fulfils the fans dreams with is awesome potential, etc etc. 100 things can happen. And because Noahs contract is off the books it really can! LOL
