Hes got a chance to be an Allan Houston type player.
He needs to make sure he slows his game down a bit and use all three zones to his benefit.
By playing to rapidly he sets himself up to be more of risky streak type player.
His efficiency is to find his spots set his feet and play with balance. If a good shot is not there pass or drive.
I think he did fine. He used the Summer League to try and expand his game. Sims did the same thing with all the bringing the ball up stuff. They won't be playing like that with the real team.
I agree with BRIGGS that Grimes needs to slow down and figure out his spots on the floor. I also agree with Clean that this was summer league and he was pushing his boundaries and the limits of his game. He will hopefully be more disciplined during the regular season with his shot selection. I am convinced that Grimes is a starting caliber SG in this league, and he should be starting for us. He still needs to develop and learn the spots where he is going to get his scoring from but his game is versatile and well-rounded. He has good size, solid defense, enough passing ability to create for others, enough handle to get by his defender, a solid 3 pt and midrange shot, and is solid at finishing at the basket. The only thing he does not have is uber athleticism but beyond that he can do pretty much anything else. I definitely want to see what he does this season before we make any decisions on a Mitchell trade but more than likely a Mitchell deal gets done before training camp.
I think like others posters said he was just trying to put his workouts to the test. We saw him put the ball on the floor and he showcased some PG skills. Some things worked and some didn’t but I think we definitely have a solid 3 and D player in the making who will start over Fournier and Reddish in due time.

I agree with everyone, unfortunately I think he’s gone. His name has come up the most so I think if we pull the trigger we have to include Grimes even though he’s perfect on that starting lineup.
Grimes always played fast to me and took contested jumpers. When he’s on he looks like a star. When he’s off he looks like he’s rushing. I think he’s more John Starks than Alan Houston. He’s a streaky shooter right now with room to improve.
But in that starting lineup he will get more wide open looks and play hard on defense which is exactly what this starting 5 needs (assuming he’s not traded).

If he is not traded, or RJ which is a strong in the rumor mills, how and where do you see him starting?
Grimes is more than 3 &D. He can dribble and pass. I saw SL as his attempting to implement that part of his game more -- for better or worse
similarly, Sims too tried to show other parts of his game which were somewhat surprising (and which still need work frankly but it was nice to see him try)
Need Grimes to do a Desmond Bane jump fr
I hope your right. I like Grimes game but my concern is that his poor shooting is in his head and might be nerves. I think we get to see Grimes grow his game and consider a Mitchell trade highly unlikely as long as Ainge is calling the shots. If they won’t accept a reasonable package then we need to stay the course and continue the rebuild…. And I’m good with that. Also, look how valuable Bridges has become to the suns. That didn’t happen in a year or even two. I see Grimes bringing similar value with a couple of seasons under his belt.

yeah... 3&D is his short term role while he fleshes out the rest of his game at the NBA level, but in summer league where he was featured we saw a real ability to move the ball and set up teammates, obviously he's a fantastic defender and we saw him do good things when the shot wasnt falling.
He's gonna be a really good player.. its really easy to see imo, just how good we'll see. Keldon Johnson just got paid. No reason Grimes cant follow that type of arc. Assuming he's on the team he's already in the rotation, coach loves him... all he's got to do is hit shots early and Thibs will cement him in there. We are pretty thick at the wing so if Grimes comes out cold I would expect other guys (Cam) to get some burn.
I recall IQ did not look all that great last year. Seems he as working on aspects of his game and that was the priority. come the season it took time to burn it in.
I can see knicks and him too a similar tact. Get some new toys, try it out in SL, then refine it.
Is he the elegant version of a modern H20, or the raw Starks? Or what ever anyone wants to fancy him as.
Seems on these pages if he sticks will be the new argue dude fans will argue over. The flavor of the year!

Sorry, let me be clear………I don’t see Grimes starting if Donovan is traded here. But I automatically took that scenario out of my thinking that Grimes and Donovan would be on the Knicks together. Utah was asking for grimes from the very beginning so I would guess whatever package we settle on, grimes and Donovan will not play together as a knick.
Grimes is a better starter to me, then Fournier. And EF is better as a lead guard off the bench since he is more than a catch and shoot player. If Donovan is traded, grimes is not here so no need to talk about him starting on the Knicks. Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my previous post Nolad.

That would be nice and that’s a good comp for him.

Does the kid pass? Lol
Think H2O2 played well in summer League. Agreed that he had a different role as the alpha.
I do not think H2O2 should start though. Nor do I think that is a step back for him. See his natural progression to come off the bench and get solid minutes with the second unit. Kind of what IQ did in his second year. Feel Thibs will use him a lot down the stretch due to his defense.
I hope we keep him as he seems to be highly skilled. As is IQ.
Would rather see Obi, Deuce, Roka, Keels traded instead. Unfortunately, do not think that would be anywhere near to what the Jazz will want.
The ring is all that really matters, but this takes a little bit of the sting out of our loss.

I expect to see a lot of Tari Eason's name this season. It will sting every time. I think I may have preferred Tari Eason to Brunson.

Just looked up Bane's stats. Really awesome season from him. Really awesome 2nd year for him - better than any of his college seasons. 18.2ppg on 43.6% 3pt, 46.1% FG, 90.3% FT, and 4.4rpg. He was supposed to be buried on the bench behind Dillon Brooks, but earned PT with Brooks out and never let it go.
If Grimes could develop into that or even a poor mans Bane... there'd be nothing not to like.

I agree Briggs but his rapid pace is a reflection of his lack of confidence — he treats the ball like a hot potato and hopefully he can settle / slow down with maturity.
You want players to be decisive — I remember George Karl screaming at players to shoot/pass/dribble but don’t hold the F***ing ball but Grimes is in a panic much of the time. He plays as fast as he talks - lol -which is extremely fast.
Big concern for me is Grimes horrible mid-range %s because he’s not a great athlete or finisher. For someone with such a beautiful stroke and the ability to get hot from 3 - his mid range pull up is frustratingly poor (again I think he panics in these spots).
Watch clips of D Mitchell and he is cruising around with the ball and killing people with various craftiness but rarely is he spread up beyond who’s fast he wants to play.

Brunson has that skill and I'll say even IQ was improving in this area as the season went by. I think part of the problem is that Grimes still needs to tighten his handle. He still gets sloppy, especially going left. It causes him to panic some and lose composure. But he's improving. I think he'll get it with more reps.
