Knicks · Around the NBA 2022-23 (page 51)

Lin signed a poison pill contract with the Rockets when the Knicks had his RFA rights. I think Lin decided to leave regardless of Melo mentoring him or not. Fall out was the best season in the past 20 years, so I'm not sure why anyone is crying about it.

True that greats can lead by example but coaching/teaching/mentoring is a different story. Larry Bird could coach, but it drove him nuts. Magic sucked at it. Bill Russell outside of player coach for Celtics did not do great. Willis Reed. Steve Nash. Jerry West. Wes Unseld. Jason Kidd IM not sure is a good coach yet. He is not awful but he on his third team and perhaps he gets enough experience to evolve (Likely whats happening).
Today the money for stars is so massive its likley there is motivation and patience for great players to pay the dues and reformulate a persona conducive being a good coach. Derek Fisher was no star and was thought he could transition smooth. Steve Kerr too his time earning experience before he took a shot at it.
Jordan and Lebron are and were leaders by example. JOrdan demanded to win. Lebron wants to win with a group. Either good mentors as players? hard to say. media tells us Rose likes to be this dude. Drose not the typical MVP now mentoring sage. He has spend a ton of time on the sidelines over the years and his perspective to reach the mountaintop of MVP at such a young age and then fall is quite an experience. His Addidas contract was a great motivator to keep him on the court. He earned that contract.
John Wall and Westbrook don’t seem like good mentors.
Melo was a good teammate and perhaps mentored guys to look out for themselves as its a business?
He mailed it in for a good bit after his extension and while he said all the right things about the triangle and “sacrifice his game” he really didn’t follow through. I suppose in a span of less than 5 years the triangle became antiquated or nobody but PHil could really coach/teach it?

Regarding Kevin Love:
I'm still a bit blown away by the contract buy-out. He asked to leave a Cavs team that's currently sitting 4th place in the eastern conference seeding? I guess he wasn't getting minutes and feels like he's still game worthy? Or that he didn't feel like mentoring Mobley and Allen? It's just curious.

Regardless, the team seems to have promised to retire his number in the future.

He can sign with a team that the Cavs could face, perhaps even in the 1st round.

A good playoff run could be the difference between an MLE contract and a get minimum one. I think the Cavs just decided to do him a solid on this one. Love hitting a game 7 3 in Cleveland for the Heat would be heart breaking.

Brought this situation up - I think all the way back to the summer.

Seems very suspicious to me — very few situations where nobody can find the issue but player just can’t play or run.

No proof but really think this is either Lonzo angling for a retirement settlement or forcing his way out of Chicago. I know others will disagree but just highly suspicious- I think Bulls training staff even said recently they can’t find the injury.

Problem would be if he wants out of Chicago who is going to take a chance on him if he hasn’t played in 2+ years

when there is no clear answer the public tilts to a conspiracy of sorts? Toxic is social media. Why would he want to angle for a retirement settlement if he not hurt for real?
How can you draw this as "Suspicious" when all you got is "I think Bulls training staff even said"............Your not even sure? If they said that, and I doubt they would given HIPA privacy rules, what is the deal?
He says there is pain. You don't believe him?
You were saying you were suspicious last summer?
Its not that I agree or disagree with you. I just have no idea where you are coming from on this?

Some years you draft RJ Hampton with the #24 pick in the 2020 draft, and then some times you draft IQ with the #25 pick which is much much better. And some times Desmond Bane is the #30th pick in the same draft

I sure remember that draft. Both Hampton and Bane were in board discussions at the slot we took IQ. No regrets!

I know nothing about Hampton other than his stat lines -- I see his minutes were down. Guessing the FO won't be taking a flyer.

KFS podcast had a Magic podcaster and he made it seem like RJ showed decent enough flashes, but their roster has a glut of young combo guards.

There were rumors that he'd "retire" at the end of the season. Reportedly was connecting in the lockerroom and there were fans calling for him to be fired on forums. I don't know what to make of it except that the org seems like a s@#t show. Hope Landry makes it through with his head in tact.

I feel terrible for these teams with all the drama.

Just terrible!
