Knicks · Preseason Gamethread: The offseason lull is finally OVER. Detroit, come on down (page 12)
SergioNYK wrote:It felt nice to sit down and watch a Knicks game! Having a capable PG made it 100x better too! Brunson is already a favorite of mine. Love his pace and footwork offensively! He also might be small but he battles defensively. Cunningham tried to bully him down low and Brunson was having none of it! I also really liked what I saw from Deuce. I really hope Thibs saves Rose this season and doesn't play him heavy minutes or every game. Let Deuce get some of those minutes this season.Good to see all the players in shape. Everyone did their thing and I really have no complaints except for some of Obi's shot selection. He needs to chill out with the threes. And sucks about Reddish! Kid can't catch a break!
The pre season is the perfect time to work on the things you added in the summer...Regardless, Obi is going to have to hit the 3 at a respectable clip throughout the season.

There are fans who favor hopefuls over established players.
Someone's dream of what they think a kid can be is much better than the reality of what he really is.
Grimes and IQ are examples of the kind of players that make it in the NBA. Deuce is one of many more that have excellent skills but are not well balanced on both sides. Grimes and IQ can both play good defense (like Deuce) but they can also score at the NBA level. Not sure why Deuce's offensive production, in the G league, has yet to transfer over to the NBA. I am sure Thibs is dying to give Deuce minutes but like Frank, he has yet to show he can hit an open shot or is able to break down his defender.
Brunson adds some serious intelligence and poise to the starting unit
all minutes must be earned

JB
Rose
IQ
Grimes
FournierBut I believe this proves my point on why I was on thigs last season when instead of turning to Burks (when Kemba went down and when it was clear Burks was not the answer). I’m not saying he should’ve started, but IQ could’ve started and deuce as backup. I feel like deuce would’ve been even better this year. But hey I’m just a fan what do I know. I’ll keep my trust in thibs for now. Maybe this was better for him may be not. Right now he seems even more ready to impact the team even as a defensive specialist. Lots of dynamic and shifty guards in the league. Glad we have someone who can guard them.
Hand picked by thibs himself. And with his play so far I can see this team making some minor trades which is needed in order to see these guys like deuce on the court during the regular season.
The only player really ahead of McBride is rose for backup pg and he’s old and fragile. Even if Thibs views him more as a 2 that’s fine it just means he’s a backup 2 and IQ becomes backup pg when Rose gets hurt
We have to be tenacious on defense and become the league’s best defensive team. I want to see McBride, Cam, and Mitch a lot in the rotation. Obviously Mitch will get 35 minutes a night but I want the other two involved as wellQuentin Grimes says hello. He backs up EF.
Brunson/EF
IQ/Rose: In this instance Rose is the PGLets say there are 30 games where Drose is out. The question becomes Brunson likely goes 35 min. That opens Grimes to be paired with Either IQ or Deuce. Neither has shown superior playmaking skills. IQ can shoot, but Deuce defense is the shine for him.
Grimes can pick up minutes backing RJ. So can EF. Cam needs that spot to stay.We can only guess the Thibian mind and guess he thinks defense first so the logic is “Play Miles and let him play his way to a better tommorow”……. We know the yoot loving fans mantra by now. But Miles will camp in the corner on offense and that puts his transition defense a bit harder to implement.
Food for PhilC: Elf was a good defender and 6-5. He could score and play make. I know this will rot and rent space in your head but Deuce is not as good as Elf. This is not a stretch. He is a second year player who by admission of his college coach came out a year early and also said that Deuce was cool to learn from the bench. That we know and heard in an interview. Thus, its not hate to say “he is not ready”. Its the point of debate “well if we don’t win why not win but develop at the same time”. Thats a good debate and one whose answer lies perhaps in when a playin position is not attainable and we throw in the towel. Not one that can be said after one preseason game.
As a “Mini Marcus smart” we have to remember how many seasons it took for Smart to get his offensive game going and that he only became the starting PG last season. Thgedefense and leadership kept him on the court until the rest of his game caught up. McBride was drafted for his potential. It takes time to unfold.
Some fans when it happens will point to themselves and say “See, I told you”. Others will mutter “finally”.
No two players are the same. No two fans are the same.Frank ran out of time and yet while some pointed to themselves and said “he’ll never play in the nba again”, he does.
I don’t know where his career goes but in Dallas its about the coach, the system, the chemistry, and execution. Frank has to hit his open looks. If he does his defense will change games. We saw that. Paired with Luka he gets space.
And I don’t give two rats asses where Elf is or isn’t. I reference that for 2/3 of the 4 seed season he contributed to a chemistry that kept things going until Drose resurrection took off. Deuce is not as good as Elf. But I want him to be. We do love our defensive minded guards!I think IQ is in the lead for backup SG. Not sure why folks think its Grimes' spot to lose. One of those tough roster battles, but IQ would seem to be in the lead on that.
Agree with this. I see the rotation being JB, EF, RJ, Randle, Mitch, Rose, IQ, Grimes, Obi, Hart.
Good chance we see some of EF's minutes, down the stretch, go to IQ or Grimes. Depending which one has it going.
gradyandrew wrote:First rotation by the starters was a little clunky but after Derrick Rose came in it was smooth sailing.JB is a game changer on offense,he's going to be wowing us for a long time with all that Niftiness in the paint. His height will be an issue on defense all season but the rest of the team is solid enough that it won't be unworkable. Brunson is willing to sacrifice his body to take charges which are some of the best plays in the game.
How about Mitchell Robinson's breakaway dunk to start the game!? You could see his teammates were looking for him on offense, but it seems like Robinson will forever struggle to be a roll threat like Capela or peak DeAndre Jordan. Hart has a lot more flash to his game (though passing up dunks can get you exiled from Philly). Still, Robinson's D is tough to quantify. The eye test says that all good things the Knicks do this season will start with Robinson's ability to shut down the paint and control rebounds.
RJ and Randle played with a bona fide point guard and their efficiency shot up- hmm.
Deuce got 6 steals. I think his offensive role might be cuts and picks. With Hart spreading the floor it could work. Hopefully Thibs will embrace running teams ragged with our depth.
Cam- we have such high hopes for you! After he hit that first line drive 3, I had my hopes up high. I was pumped to see him pass back to RJ for the assist. Cam needs to trust he will get his opportunities and try not to force it.
Preseason has had blow outs across the league so far. I don't know the statistical history of preseason but it could be an ugly regular season. I don't think teams are running scared of GSW or Boston. It looks like Klay has lost a step and if he's not at All NBA level, the Warriors are beatable. The drat looks like it will have at least two franchise players. It's possible that after 20 games the contender and lottery teams might already be sorted out.
Good post. Agree with most.
My takeaways:
They ran at a much faster pace offensively. Including after makes.
Good to see but also means a lot of quick shots. Great if you're making them but the optics will change quickly when they dont.
Wanted to see much more PnR. Think we have the right pieces for it on both units.
Wanted to see Hart at the high post distributing the ball. Think he has the skills.
Also thought IQ forced it a bit and wondered how that will affect Grimes in that unit.
Wanted to see Randle working with JB more.
Overall, great first game. Detroit made it easy with all the turnovers and they are not very deep but we could have played to their level. As we did so many times last year.
Like JB addition. I did not expect much but so far pleasantly surprised.
The first thing that struck me about this squad was the ball movement. Lots of it. Not as many ISOs as last season. Dont know if thats true.
The D was great. McBride was really playing those passing lanes, but also just took the ball from the Pistons. Wouldnt mind seeing a Grimes/McBride backcourt. If Just to keep D.Rose from wearing out from too many minutes in the regular season. That could be one of the best defensive backcourts in the league. Their scoring needs to improve, but they could be the backcourt you send in, to wear down the other squad. Both players make the offense work harder for everything.
Wow, we have a legit starting PG! Makes things easier on the rest of the squad. We've had this discussion many times over the years. Glad its been put to rest, now that we have Brunson. Rose looks spry, having him reasonably healthy in the playoffs, could get us a round further.
Obi looked good driving to the rim, but so many ugly shots. Hoping PT will help. Randle had his ups and downs, but he stayed within the offense. If he drove into a double team, he gave the ball up. Quickley didnt look too good, but it might be just getting used to the new teammates.
Hartenstein is better than I thought. More hustle plays than expected. And we havent seen his passing game take off yet.
RJ hit some clutch shots out there, his 3pter looked sharp.
I still wouldnt sleep on the Pistons.

I thought our size really stood out. Our short guys play very physical and the rest of the team is big. Mitch/Randle/RJ/Fournier got meat

If Noel can stay on the court, doesnt miss too many games. Burks gives the Pistons off the bench, what he gave us. I see a team that could be a playoff sleeper.
Hopefully our size can be put to good use in the playoffs. It helped the Celtics with their run.

Did you laugh as hard as the rest of us did while typing that out?
Guess counting on D. Rose in any way is laughable as well. Wouldnt count either of them out. They dont need heavy minutes to play an important role.

Hart & Cam = weakness in the paint, and unable to set a decent screen/pick for teammates.
It's like the head coach and Leon are not looking for team-players just iso-scorers.
coach Thibs did not set up any screen/pick plays for Fournier to go around to get an open shot.
The Deuce-McBride 6 steals says Tom Thibs are still an assistant coach for not giving Deuce any playing time last season. I recall Thibs doing the same to Nate the Great.

A back court of Deuce & Quickley's all-around performance maybe better than Grime's & Quickley
Pistons looked awful and did not take care of the ball. Ivy first game in MSG. Cade despite not a rook had to also have some yips first game after a long off season. Deuce was awesome but lets not pretend this was a bench mark setting performance. Need more of this and as said, has to hit his shots. Otherwise he is Frank.
Curious, do the same dudes that love deuce also loved Frank?

No one is calling McBride the starting PG of the future. We were still hearing that about Frank from some posters in year 3. Was more like a cult lol.

Silver said he’s gonna rig the draft for us. Wembenyama in the NY market for 15 years would be an ATM machine for the league but we get to pick 8th overall again for the 2 millionth time
