There is a problem. Watching players jack up threes a problem. You can go to the park and watch people jack up threes. The skill set is becoming weak. Gone are turn around jumpers and post play. Now it’s just step back and Jack a three. Eliminate the corner three and watch how defense picks up to guard the back court. The reason NBA put a three point shot in was to increase entertainment value to end games. Now they just Jack a three to start the game in the middle and in the end. It’s not fun to watch.

all those things still exist. You literally arent watching

38% of NBA shots are from 3. Yeah, that's alot. What is not gone is the post game and attacking the rim. Saying the NBA is like watching kids a park chuck 3s isnt bringing much to the discussion. Its an analytics league. That means high yield shots. That means there's going to be a lot of shots at the rim and from 3.

Many teams have great drive and dish games and quality ball movement. Other's are iso heavy. How's the YMCA squads looking?

Not true. The nba enjoyed its best tv ratings ever in the 80’s and 90’a. For example the 1999 nba finals between the Knicks and spurs were between a 12.1 share to the lowest being a 9.9 share. And that’s without Jordan. Ratings for last years finals were between a 7.5 share at the highest and 6.2 at the lowest

and they said that was super boring and created a totally iso driven league so they changed the rules and this is the result.

ratings are based on the match ups. Nothing beat Jordan. However when it was Lebron's Cavs vs. the Warriors or some other good matchups the views were there.

Spurs were boring and not ratings monsters.

I don't think that's really changed. Instead of the post it's now the PnR and guys are still going 4 out they just extend to the three point line

I understand both sides of the table, the NBA is way faster and less grind the players are more protected and there’s a lot more shots going up then in the early 90’s. So the pace is more entertaining and can grab the attention of even the most novice fan to watch the entire game, it’s surprising that ratings are on a downward trend. In today’s game it’s rare for a 48 min blowout because of all the threes and lack of real 48 minute defense. So even with a 20 point lead with 7 min to go the losing team is not dead in the water. Blowing big leads is the norm now it’s not just a knick problem. Again this leads to a more entertaining game for most fans . Without hand checking this is what the game evolved to… it took a pretty long time for the game to evolve to completely take advantage of the lack of intense physical defense where you could shutdown shooters and physically get them off rhythm or off there spots. Shooters like Dell curry and Hubert Davis would have had a field day if they could play in today’s NBA.

With that said there needs to be a balance if the NBA were to bring back hand checking maybe it needs to be allowed with only 2 minutes left in each quarter or the opposite and not allowed in the last two minutes.

The fact is, there is no more intense physical battles or grinds and the game is all finesse, with zero physicality, that is a problem and the real defense we grew up with is dead and maybe long gone if nothing is done to bring it back. I for one miss real defense and bruisers like oak and mase who wouldn’t touch the floor in todays game.

Ok, I need to stop you there. I agree Oak's game would've aged out of today's game. But if there's a place Draymond, there's definitely a place for Mase, who was more athletic, a better dribble and a better finisher.

Kind of agree with Briggs. I find the game today boring. I don't mind seeing penetration and a kick out for a 3, or 3/4 passes which ends in an open 3, but some of the chucking seems mindless, even if its effectiveness is, I assume, backed up by statistical models I have no interest in learning about.

Reminds me of MLB & its swing for the fences philosophy.

Who cares if you miss 75% of your 3 pt shots? Who cares if you strike out 200 times?

I don't think this is the right metric. Lots more on TV now than 20 years ago, I also don't know how accurate those numbers are, probably it misses a lot of people who watch online. A better metric would be the money in the game, at the end of the day it's about ticket sales and advertising. BRI and franchise values have exploded since then, far outpacing inflation. The NBA is more popular than it's ever been and the players are more talented.

The second clause I think is also pretty easy to prove. In the past, about 10% of 7 foot tall men in the world had been rostered in the NBA. Clearly being tall was good enough to get a contract. Now, that's no longer the case.

Knicks-Spurs were a strike short season and no super duper stars (sans Jordan). Timmy was not a household name and Spurs were not big market marquee team.
Spree was not universally liked outside of NY.
Strike season might have had a lot to do with the lack of interest going into the finals, and yes, No jordan.
Covid and timing of playoffs in 2020 and the weird 2021 season did taper off iinterst.
