Knicks · Now we have a clue about Cam's PT (page 2)

Do they want him that much? The Knicks can't even fetch two 2nd rounders for him.
I guess I am more focused on the roster spot than the price. If teams like the Bucks and Suns think they can use a guy like him, I mean, we can't? I am more upset that the term "coaching" is just burying a 23 year old kid with amazing biometrics and natural talent because he speaks to the coaches and wants more. He is an RFA and this is his livelihood. I saw some goofy plays but like most of the team, I see young players frozen out of the game by the ball dominance of our 3 high usage players. I see a kid that just needs a little coaching. Coach him.
He's a long multi skilled multi dimensional big wing, can guard many spots, and shoot, drive, make a good pass....
Except he sucks. He shows flashes but in the end he sucks. All his numbers are not good. All his analytics are not good. This is the exact same thing that happened in Atl.. he got time, looked good for stretches and then wondered why he wasnt playing 30+ minus and getting 15+ shots a game when he wasnt playing well, or playing flat out BAD

Yeah, he's not really good enough to dictate the style of the offense and his game, whatever it is, isn't flexible enough to be incorporated into an offensive system. Don't get me wrong, I'm not crazy about the team's current offensive style. But if Cam can't master the basics, what coach is going to feel comfortable giving him a longer leash?

How do you know this? Are you basing it on Media Click Bait and Internet Rumor mills? How about wait 'till a trade actually happens before creating a hypothesis that is an indictment of the Knicks Coaching Staff? In terms of coaching.....this is the NBA not some rec league. Guys are getting paid to perform and help the team win by taking ownership and accountability for their own development and progression. Cam has pretty much failed that process with 2 franchises. Maybe the problem is not with the coaching staff but with Cam? Maybe he is not receptive to coaching and thinks he has it all figured out already. We all know people like that. History is littered with athletes who have amazing natural talent but never "make it". Mostly because its what's in (or not in) their head. Cam may ultimately end up having a nice NBA career - but its possible he just hasn't figured it out (in his head) yet.

This is an example of someone leaving college early. This is the risk of a player is not mature enough or hasn’t fully developed yet. They need a certain environment or culture to squeeze out his potential. And environment that doesn’t remove players for his mistakes. He’s still young but owe well. Thibs don’t want him so what’s the point. Hope thibs made the right decision.

Please explain how? The team gave up assets they felt were not important to take a chance on a player with high upside potential. It has not worked out so far and it appears they are trying to move on and recoup something for that player. Terrible asset management would be if that given the situation, the Knicks decide to retain Cam by awarding him a multi-year deal. To me the measure of success is recognizing and taking corrective actions for your failures and then making future progress through adjustments from key learnings. Fans seem to expect perfection, but that is just not the way life works.

I guess Nate McMillan also did not make the right decision as well? Again - this is the NBA - not some child care facility. If a guy wants to leave college early to chase his dream - its up to him to make that dream a reality. Thibs does not remove some other players for their mistakes...even first and second year players.....why is that? Maybe is has something to do with the way they work, listen, learn and put forth effort. Maybe that all has to do with what you guys are referring to as favoritism.

This is literally the crux of it.
Cam wants to be a focal point of an offense. I keep reading that Cam thinks he is Paul George type and wants that particular type of role. I took that to mean he wanted as many touches as say Brunson/Randle on the team and to be featured the way RJ has been featured for the Knicks since he got here. That was also the same feel while he was in Atlanta. It's why he wanted out of Atlanta. You won't get a direct quote on that from either player or team but that was widely understood.
Every coach and NBA person will tell you that players - and especially young players who are not at the quality of Zion, Morant, LeBron (you get the level) - have to find a role on their team and start from there. Excel at it and then grow. It's especially so with Thibs. It's just how he operates for better or worse.
Thibs wants Cam to play a particular role on team and Cam seems like he wanted more. My assumption is when this occurred, he and Knicks agreed to find him a home.
Cam probably freaked the F out when Grimes was slotted for the starting position. Understandable IMHO but thems also the breaks.

Don't think it's any deeper than that, unless his bitching was a final straw in a long line of bitching....
Same.
In my mind when that juncture point happens, usually a decision is made at the FO level with coaching staff involved: is it worthwhile to keep this guy or just move on? Seems like they moved on and have been looking for trades.
Unfortunate, it’s an exact repeat of what happened in ALT
But it is telling this player's particular set of problems may be self inflicted.
Cam on a DSJr level path but with more talent and less back problems or whatnot.
Man, the guy is so smooth too

This is correct. We had Kevin Knox, a lesser version of Cam, that we'd seen enough of. Cam was a newer toy, shown a bit more at the NBA level cost Knox and some protected draft capital that wasn't absurdly costly. We took a gamble on a trial of the guy to see if he would do more than what he was shown. You can argue that the staff didn't give him as many chances as it could have, but he had some injuries, we had some logjams of personnel, and he didn't always give consistent effort.
He is a prospect turned project. He is athletic. he might still be good.
It happens. WE wins some, we lose some.
Grimes got the start, and since Reddish and EF sit the team is doing very well. It happens.
Happens to all teams. Even the best ones create opportunities and not all pan out.
We don't know alot. If he asked to be traded one cannot very well trade a kid who is injured, so he sits.
I would imagine he is gone by next week. If he is free at seasons end and we don't sign him, perhaps we waive him if nobody gives us squat for him.
Im sure some of you need blame. Thibs, FO, or make up a story of disconnect. Im sure Thibs was not happy to get him, but he gave it a try. Im sure WWW was not happy with Thibs last year.
Im not so sure THibs was happy with himself last year.
Team is better this year in a tougher conference. Nobody had to get fired either for things to improve.
FO did better by getting the beast FA value in years (JB) and Thibs is coaching Randle better.
If we can get RJ going again and finish above the play in the season is a qualified success. Play in game is still better than not.
Below .500? Won't be happy. Then have to see what went wrong and figure it out. Not my job.
I guess some guys, for any number of reasons, despite size and the sweetest looking stroke, will not pan out as regular NBA rotation players.
I agree with a lot here about Cam, but we should just let him go - either through trade or release and give him a chance elsewhere.
And increasingly, I want us to take all three draft picks coming to us (assuming Dallas & Wizards convey) and pick three guys and give them a shot on the roster to see if they can turn into IQs, Grimes, McBrides or better versions.

It’s possible I overvalue size and wingspan. But RJ is not the 3&D I want in the SF slot. Reddish, at least size wise, is. I tend to think that all these young players are tremendously talented and that opportunity just as important as innate skill. I keep arguing on this board, among other fans, to see that guys that fit my idea of size and shape get that opportunity. Cam has moments where I think I’m watching Durant. He has other moments where I think it’s some clumsy kid whose legs grew too fast. But Barrett is getting every opportunity and Reddish is not. Because Barrett has the better pedigree and has had the benefit of better coaching, a royal godfather, and came into the league with better fundamentals. Meanwhile, Reddish has the better build for SF and has some natural talent that looks like it could be unlocked with a little coaching and some growing pains.
For me, if we were winning 60 games and sitting him locked up the #1 seed, I’d be more understanding. We are 27-25 while running our starters into the ground.
I just think pretty highly of Reddish and don’t really think he is getting a fair shake here.

Knox has an eFG of .599 and is shooting 38% from 3 in 15 mins per game for the worst team in the league. But he is getting minutes and those minutes are productive. Honestly, the opportunity in Detroit is a good stepping stone for him.
