Knicks · Quickley gonna get paid (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 2/28/2023 1:45 AM
Last year I thought Brunson might be valued as a max contract or close. He didn’t get it but in retrospect he was worthy.
I think the same thing is happening with Iq. He’s a burgeoning star two way guard. Won’t a team try to pay up to get him— can the Knicks even match? What a turn around by the way. At points he was a Mendoza line player. Always tough but Mendoza like.
Kemet @ 2/28/2023 2:26 AM
Quickley's dynamic combo-guard performance on both sides of the court in his rookie season said it all.
A Knicks future star player!
Quickley played the Batman/Robin role so well with D.Rose in the backcourt during his rookie season .. A Star was born.
Knixkik @ 2/28/2023 3:48 AM
He could make an argument for Barrett/Herro/Poole money and the Knicks probably need to do it because he’s just so valuable to what they are doing right now. Between quickley and hart this roster is going to start getting expensive. Both are irreplaceable here.
franco12 @ 2/28/2023 6:55 AM
And this is the challenge of building a winning team in the NBA.
ramtour420 @ 2/28/2023 7:00 AM
Guys on rookie contracts come in super useful for teams that are contending for this particular reason
blkexec @ 2/28/2023 7:25 AM
He also had added motivation this last game, going up against the leading 6th man of the year. Right now IQ is 2nd or 3rd. So he was definitely motivated and even mentioned a little about that in his post game interview. Lets see if he can carry this momentum into the playoffs. We will need IQ, Grimes and RJ. But IQ will and should get paid. RJ got his bag, so why not IQ.

Luckily the Knicks will likely have a draft pick that’s better than their record so a good opportunity to replenish the rookie contract pipeline. Have to think after punting the draft last year the Knicks won’t mind adding a rookie to the mix (possibly 2 if Jokubaitis comes).

newyorknewyork @ 2/28/2023 7:43 AM
Rose coming off the books covers Hart. Fournier coming off the books covers IQ. Even if they didn't. Dolan hasn't shown to care about lux tax for a playoff team.

IQ on rookie contract. They can extend him 4 years this summer OR he plays the year out and can sign a 5 year deal. He would be a RFA after this summer (if he doesn't sign) and Knicks could match any offer by another team.

I think he will sign 4 year extension this summer for under the $100M mark.

4 years/$76-$80M? Sounds about right. But it only takes one team to throw things out of wack.

Another team can't even offer anything to him until summer 2024.

Yeah I’m hoping we don’t get to that point. I do think the number will be higher than 76-80 though.

This is a really good point. For all of the changes since the playoff team 2 years ago and the contracts signed that summer, it seems that the Knicks are settling into a great group of long term signed players they are committed to. Once rose and Fournier are replaced with Hart and Quickley, Knicks will have their most important players all on long term deals without any bad contracts.

There is no way he gets less than Barrett money. He is a more valuable player. Just look who is in the game at the end.

Begs the question what do they do with Toppin. He has not proven to be worth his QO and besides being a crowd favorite, he is easily replaceable. Obi is definitely not getting extended

I think this is why we have draft picks. The FO has proven they can find great talent later in the draft.

We might end up with 2 picks in the first - Dallas and Washington. You could trade Obi & Fournier to create room and allow Obi to prove himself with another team.

MaTT4281 @ 2/28/2023 8:27 AM
Pay the man and don't overthink it. 3rd most important player on this team.

Objectively what is now is not what might be. This lineup works now, FOR NOW. Trying to piece the puzzle of the future is never easy for a fan. IQ is doing great but he does not have the body of work to warrant 20mil. Barrett need not be in the convo for IQ’s money. Its different player, position and Barretts 3 prior years of improvement.
I see IQ as a 15-18mm player. And yes, if another team sees it different then thats another story perhaps.

EF’s contract is a trade asset for next year. So is Grimes or IQ and with a pick your now in the conversation for a “star”. Who that is I cannot see.

Knicks are. Young, have picks, doing well, have a good base and are prime for a consolidation deal. Where is RJ in the conversation? I don’t know. I do know that this FO is professional and patient. Remember when Knicks were 3 under and Cavs came to town and Thibs was rumored on the hot seat? One month in and fans were freaking out.
I don’t know if RJ is a good fit going forward and his play is effected by Randle and Brunsons ascension.

My preference is to rehab him and if he is a knick going forward so be it. If he is part of a big trade, then let the cards fall as they may. Fact is he is playing under 30 min now and team is winning. JHart was a great add.

Be honest, few if any saw that coming. Its why fans suck at pretend GM. Except for NYKmentality who is flying high!

VDesai @ 2/28/2023 9:02 AM
Still some inconsistency to his game, but he is certainly on the best stretch of his career. FG% is around 44% now. His drives to the basket are effective and he's knocking down open 3's more consistently. Defense is really impressive.

I was thinking $15mm per, but someone could speculate on his upside. I still don't see him as a pure PG but he's a super valuable / versatile combo G.

Like Fournier and Reddish finesse scores don't fit with Thibs. Swapping Obi with another lunch pale dirty work guy who can fill in spot mins behind Randle would be another tweek to push for advancement. Or an absolute sniper that shoots 45% from 3 or something for spacing.

I'd say a veteran whose at the stage where he's comfy with 15mins a game. Taj Gibson from 2 seasons ago type. And a high potential project rookie that can be something in 4 yrs for pipeline.

martin @ 2/28/2023 9:13 AM
For good measure, Collin Sexton, after sitting out a year with zero track record for defense (and I don't watch him so this is guess) got a 4 year $70M extension off of rookie contract.

I think the Knicks value IQ more than that and his contract will be in the 4yr $80M range. His intangibles and progress has been outstanding and also hasn't slowed down.
