What Immanuel Quickley is doing is extremely rare (special).
And he's already got absolute elite Defense too
He's 100% going to get paid and become paid big time and I'm just thankful it's he'll become paid (long-term) as a Knick because there's a 0.00% chance Leon Rose doesn't keep him long term for his Coach Thibs.
He's also going to replace Quentin Grimes as our Starting 2G come next year too (imo) but nonetheless he's already our closer (more important).
Wait, so now we have Kobe AND Curry? Look out world!

he's phucking Kobe. You resign Kobe
my head is spinning. if he's Kobe then who is RJ?
I have to wonder if this trend continues and the team keeps playing well with IQ playing at this level, would thibs replace grimes with IQ in the starting lineup next year? Quickley is the perfect 6th man, but he may eventually want more, and he’s outplaying Grimes this year. Regardless of who starts, it’s going to be really hard for the 5 finishing each close game to not be Brunson, IQ, Hart, Randle and Mitch. Barrett and grimes aren’t exactly likely to finish any games going forward. Thibs loves both but he loves IQ and Hart more than Grimes and RJ.

Quickly is should be considered a valuable piece to Knicks future.
While we add it…Sign Obi as well. Not as valuable but unless someone better comes along, bring him back as well

Without question. Look @ James Harden in OKC used to come off the bench behind Westbrook and Durant as their 6th man and now an absolute NBA Superstar from the Guard positions.
Same will happen for Immanuel Quickley he's already our 6th man + Closer and Coach Thibs is developing IQ the way he wants to before IQ creates himself into NBA STARDOM (as Thibs starter @ SG + combo PG with A++ Defense too).

Agreed. Quickley is the 3rd most valuable on the team right now. As for Obi, I’m not completely opposed to resigning him but he just hasn’t been good this year for whatever reason. Big step back despite the improving in shooting.

Depending on Hart resigning, whether the Knicks keep the Dallas draft pick (and get the Washington draft pick), the kNicks could be flirting with luxury tax line next year.
That's of course depending on any major trade, but I wouldn't necessarily be shocked by a Toppin trade for a protected future 1st, or another Detroit salary dump trade for Fournier and a protected lst.
Knicks might not have the luxury (pun coincidence) to carry Toppin and Fournier to the trade deadline if they resign hart and keep a 1st rounder or two.

The Knicks have never really cared about luxury tax. This year being the exception because they started so far below it they don’t want to go above for no reason.
Knicks are at 130 million for next season sans Rose and Hart. mid first round picks are 2.5 million or so. It looks likely that the Knicks will be in the luxury tax next season. The beauty of the Randle/ Brunson contracts is that they put a soft cap on the other players on the roster.
The Knicks will definitely offer him an extension this summer. It is going to boil down to whether Quickley is content playing the 6th man role or whether he wants to try and lead his own team. I really do not think he has the PG skills to run a team consistently. He is in the perfect role here. I anticipate that he signs an extension this summer for a number similar to what Martin suggested although I think the offer will be more like 4yrs/$85 million.

He will be likely traded this summer for a pick

There’s no need to until next year and even after that he’s RFA and we can match any offer

You don’t typically do that with your best players. You give them the extension to show commitment. Knicks need to continue to build the culture and not piss guys off.

The Knicks should throw out an offer, but I'd be surprised if IQ didn't wait until FA. The fact that he had trade interest from teams this season shows he has a market. Plus with the projected TV deal, even if there's smoothening, there's going to be a lot of money throw out there.

The TV deal does add an unusual factor, but typically players of this caliber do get extensions in the summer/ fall when eligible.
Do we have a feel for past rookie contract extensions? Do most players wait until their last year to make deal or do they more likely tack on that 4 year extension of guaranteed money as soon as they can?
Feels like to me the guys that wait until their last year are guys in the slot of really not performing up to expectations.

Yes this is spot on. You get a guy like cam Johnson once in awhile who has to wait it out, but most players who play well, especially for winning teams, agree to an extension.

Would be understandable from the IQ camp. Of all of our young guys, Quick has been the most consistent in fleshing out his game and taking those strides you hope to see year to year. Certainly more steady than RJ, Obi, even Mitch. He's proved to be a productive player even when his shot's not falling, due to defensive awareness (he's our on-court defensive coordinator) and rebounding. From the Knicks side, this may be the safest extension they're going to be faced with, and the longer you wait, the larger that number's going to get.
It'd be both practical and appropriate to make an offer after year 3 - and to Knixkik's point, you're showing your guy early on that your committed to them and not taking the Lin "go find your own offer" approach.
Unless you're planning on keeping him flexible for trade purposes, this is the safe choice and feels like a no brainer to me.

But I feel most of those guys also had defined market values. Desmond Bane will likely sign an extension early because guys like RJ, Herro and Poole already did most of that heavy lifting. IQ is a little different. We've already seen differing opinions on this board about what IQ can extend for. The FO seemed to be struggling with this earlier in the season when gauging IQ's trade value. This has the potential to be really tricky. Other factors include how much IQ feels comfortable in a continued sixth man role? Does he see himself as more? Will he bet on himself like FVV did?

That’s fine and I’m sure Rose/Perry will make a good faith offer during next season before he can technically hit the open market summer 2024
As much as I like Quickley I wouldn’t rule out using him as trade bait next year.
