Knicks · Mike Breen and Walt's negative takes. (page 1)

Was talking to a buddy who produces for ESPN. Trying to get insight on any convos between JVG and Breen the night of the Lakers game. Seemed odd that JVG's take on Randle was the same as what Breen has been suggesting throughout the year. Seemed as though JVG 's views, that night, were more of a snip perhaps of a conversation they may have had prior to the game. Unfortunately, my friend was not involved with that game so just speculating. But Knicks commentary seemed negative yet again. Even after Randle proved their narratives wring. Additionally, we have seen Walt's comments on RJ that were less than complimentary. Thought it a bit shortsighted of a 22 year old. Hate to say it but have noticed a bit of jealousy at times from Walt. Especially kids making a lot of money. And yes I get it, must be hard watching mediocre players get the kind of money that makes what he was .along as a days work.

Point is, think we have enough negative takes from the majority of the non Knicks sports media.
We don't need that from our own sportscasters. Especially when we have so many positive stories to talk about. JB, IQ, Randles All Star season, age of roster, FO success, Thibs success and our assets going forward.

Some mentioned the take on Blazers game thread as reason to suggest Randle can't play without Brunson and should be traded. Despite the two wins in a row without JB against a rolling Lakers team and a team with Simmons, who lit us up with Brunson and probably one of the best offensive players in NBA history in Lillard. Negative takes just don't take more important things into perspective. Have said several times that guys like Randle and RJ are not perfect. But the easy thing is to focus what they can't do and ignore other important variables.

Imho, Just so many more positives to talk about from OUR broadcasters. .

We're spoiled with Breen and Clyde. We really are. I'm glad they're not always sunshine and rainbows with the team because they'll voice the same frustrations we'll have while watching the game.

I used to get annoyed by Breen a long ways back because it seemed he would always go out of his way to defend the official and never questioned a bogus call. That was a long time ago. He's been much more vocal about calls he disagrees with. I think both Breen and Clyde are very fair with their less than glowing comments, but there's never any question that they are hardcore Knick fans.

i agree we're fortunate to have Breen and Clyde but i'll also admit there are times (not always) where i swear clyde is rooting against them, too critical

wonder if they could fit a third member like national broadcasts do. might snap Breen and especially Clyde out of a funk when they have a dark cloud over their head

And while i love Clyde i will say the Boston broadcasters (I live in Boston) are very knowledgeable. they're disgusting homers who never admit their team fouls etc. but when it comes to little odds and ends of what teams did on a play here or there to gain an advantage, they're tough to beat, e.g., if they wanted to run on a team they'd use old nets so ball didn't hang in the net as long and players would catch made baskets before the ball hit the floor so they could run even on "makes".

Good points. And definitely not trading Clyde and all his "Clydeisms" for anyone. We have all quoted many of them on a repetitive basis. He has been a great part of Knick history. Breen, ummm, he aight. Then again we all grew up on Marv and he was dressing up in women's clothes after the games.

Just pointing out how it would be nice for our guys to focus on positives on a national stage. Since no one else does.

I love Breen. I find it funny that he needs to remind Clyde about the rules so often and essentially feed him lines about basic strategy like whether they'd foul in certain situations

Marv's son Kenny is pretty good. Still think they should consider adding a third to Breen and Clyde. Knicks can afford it

Knickoftime @ 3/15/2023 4:57 PM
Speaking of negative takes...

Not a fan of the road on-site postgame shows.

Think that was the plan for Wally. Before the "wannabee fake all star" comment. Martin votes for Rebecca. Cohen?

gradyandrew @ 3/15/2023 6:51 PM
I was just happy that Mark Jackson wasn't there. I can't stand that guy. JVG likes the hot take and it seemed kind of stupid to say Randle struggles in the clutch without mentioning that phenomenal game winner against Miami. I was surprised Breen didn't bring it up. JVG's other comment was about Randle needing to prove it in the playoffs. I'm not sure how many All Stars are judged by that standard, Rudy Gobert for example.

Wait has said "statistically the worst defender" in reference to RJ. Kind of true, not sure if it's criticism.

I was really touched by Walt defending Ben Simmons. Seems like the only media guy to do so. Pretty strong evidence that he's not jealous of the money these guys make.

ive watched nearly every game Clyde has ever called. How can a fan break his stones for his take? Hes an iconic player and broadcaster and Knick fans are LUCKY hes ours. Jim Dolan should make sure hes one of the highest paid guys in his profession. Im not sure we need a negative Clyde Frazier post?????????

i vote for Rasheed Wallace. That guy would definitely add some energy to the commentary. COuld only imagine his analysis for a bad foul call

mostly true, but if you've really been watching all of his games you'd know he's lately been overly critical of the Knicks. It's all a matter of degree

No one is saying they don't love him.

Hes been the same and he wants the Knicks to win. A home commentator doesnt need to be a communist

This is New York not some fourth tier city like Charlotte or Sacramento. We want real, intelligent commentary and real takes. Breen is by far the best play by play in the sport and Clyde is a literal treasure.
Nalod @ 3/15/2023 10:43 PM
I bought this up last month about Clyde that AT TIMES he does go a bit salty. I don’t doubt his knowledge and his intent but he does go off at times and its a bit weird.
I know he is clyde and he our legend. He is my all time childhood hero.
Not that he should be a homer and blow smoke up our asses, but he does go all bitter man at times, and because he is “Clyde”, he gets a pass.
I like Breen and Kenny Albert,. Wally will be OK. He does have the knowledge. Is is not JJ reddick, but perhaps he grows into the roll.

I watch the games on a laptop w/o sound...So I can't comment on the commentary either way, but I'd need specific comments/criticism, and I don't see any here.

There is a lot to be critical of, though. In many games the toughness of individuals on this team gets us the W, despite some truly idiotic decision making and 1/1 hero ball. I've never been as frustrated with a good team as I am with the Knicks, because guys like Randle and RJ play like college freshmen at times.

I'm going to guess Clyde gets upset when JR & RJ continue to dribble & hold the ball even when they are double or triple teamed. Both of them, especially Randle, ignore open teammates at times.

If this was a developing team, I expect Clyde would be kinder, but this is a contending team, and certain players try to do to much while ignoring teammates. Like Clyde, I expect more from the guys on this team. so criticism by Walt, or anyone else, is fine with me.

Agree, I’ve watched a ton of Breen and Clyde last, well, going on 25 years now since in the 90’s Clyde was doing WFAN when the Knicks were on their and back then it was Marv and John Andreise. I never really got the negative Nancy vibe from him even during the decades of nonstop suckage and the media pile on
