At this point I would take Obi before RJ. At least Obi seems to know his role. I think the real trash is RJ...especially for the money we're paying him.

I dont think RJ is trash. Dont believe our "big 3" is a good fit chemistrywise. They havent really gelled IMO. RJ looked more confident, was more clutch in the 4th, earlier in his career, with less of a game.

or maybe he just got lucky a few times and the 4 years of data is enough to tell us he's not going to be a very good NBA player. We will see what call the FO makes

During the Orlando game, they talked about their number 1 pick and how coach K was holding him back in college. Now that he's in the NBA, on a team that gives him freedom, he's able to flex his wings and show off all of his skills and not just the skills that fits coach K's system.

I believe the same thing happens at the NBA level, under certain coaches. Thibs is one of those coaches that needs Thibs type players to succeed. If your not a Thibs guy (2 way, down hill player), who knows what you are until you leave and play for a different coach. Sometimes like Knox case, we are like ok he really is bad. Or Frank is another example. But there are others who thrived after leaving Thibs.

I think this experience Obi is getting under Thibs will help him in the future. He needs to go to another team and spread his wings a bit. I believe Obi has more game that we will not see playing behind Randle.

🗑️This was a trash ass "Thread Title"🗑️

Obi Toppin is currently doing an excellent job of stepping up in replace of an All-Star PF (who's hurt) in Julius Randle.

I am really interested to see what Obi would do as a starter. It will probably have to be for another team but I think he realistically could be a 20+ scorer if he has a pass-first pg on his team. Knicks likely will trade him between now and next year’s trade deadline. I doubt we can afford to extend him unless he is willing to stay on a VERY team-friendly contract.

1 rebound in 33 minutes...?

I call your "1 rebound" and raise you with "4 assists 2 steals 1 block 1 turnover 3 threes 21 points and a team high +19"

Can you please start a "gradyandrew is trash" thread so that I can blossom in good fortune in a week's time?

Let me help: This "1 rebound" post is great evidence that the only thing you care about is being "right" objective analysis and love for the team aside. Looking at the state line and the game shows you have a neophytes understanding. Obi's role is leaking out and putting the defense on it's heels. Knicks have a solid group of rebounding guards who can get the ball up the floor quick so why not take advantage of that?

I humbly suggest you learn a little humility and nuance as your streak of "xxx sucks" threads (Obi sucks, we had three draft picks in a loaded draft, etc.) seem to have a shelf life of two pages before whatever point you were trying to prove becomes untenable.

The best thing that ever happened to the Knicks was not trading Obi to the Pacers.

We have a floor general not a point guard. Brunson isn’t a guy that’s looking for guys, he certainly is a good passer and controls the game but when you have three guys that dominate the ball people suffer.

We are seeing it with Grimes. Robinson. Toppin. Even the first half of the season with Isiah. This is a good team with lots of talent. Thibs has been forced to make adjustments recently, but we all see when the ball moves good things happen.

Obi can beat people up the floor the problem is guys have to make quick decision and push the rock and get the ball in the air.

There are nights when Grimes has 1 shot in a half. I think we say Obi finally snap the other night with RJ. You have limited minutes to make your mark and RJ is selfish and Obi is not. That wears on a player.

Josh Hart is the guy Obi needs to shadow, no reason not to crash the boards, push the
tempo.

Obi has skills his shot is there, but he needs to get hard and be more aggressive. We need all these guys in the playoffs and his change of pace and energy will get the building going!

Obi trash, Grimes regressed, Knicks exposed…do your thing Caseloads….
EwingsGlass @ 4/3/2023 8:11 AM
The play where Obi was behind the basket, banged Taj to get some space and Taj didn’t budge. Bad call that Taj got the foul, but in that moment I was astonished by Taj’s core strength. Taj took the hit from Obi and literally didn’t move.

Obi needs to stay in the crease more on defense. Only way to get his rebound numbers up which no one can legitimately complain about if the Knicks are winning with him getting significant minutes

Perhaps. But Obi has a habit of not getting enough rebounds necessary for him to be effective in the PF role over the long haul.

He wasn't really going up against, you know, rebounding giants out there

HofstraBBall @ 4/3/2023 1:47 PM
Don't see the urgency to dump our players. Been saying Obi is just a role player thus far. Mentioned several shortcomings. However, he is a good back up for Randle if he gets hurt. Has showed improvement from three. Is Uber athletic and is well liked. Except by RJ. So do not want to trade him for another lottery ticket that ends up in the trash. If he continues to show the kind of energy he did last night, he is a plus. Was glad to see him have some urgency. Now need him to learn how to be a dog and show that he hates losing. Although that usually innate and hard to teach
VDesai @ 4/3/2023 1:57 PM
They are clearly asking Obi to leak out on the break. That either draws the power forwards away from the boards or gives him a mismatch in transition. If we still outrebound the other team on net I'm not terribly concerned about this given the role he is playing out there. That said I thought he got his hand on a few more looseballs than this and I'm semi surprised that the gross #.

Points in the paint last night was 64-38, so by any measure we dominated them in the interior and Obi was a part of that.

TPercy @ 4/3/2023 2:13 PM
I think Obi is in the best possible position for us. Role player but can fill in when needed. Too many shortcomings in his game to be considered a real starter

It seems like thibs likes to use Obi’s quickness on defense and getting him in rotation out on the perimeter. That’s probably a big reason why Obi isn’t spending as much time in the crease the entire time getting rebounds

The Halliburton trolls continue to go on and on about how great he is yet I’d rather have Brunson as the starting pg. if Halliburton is here do we go as hard as we did after Brunson? Probably not and he’s still in Dallas. Give me Brunson and Obi over Halliburton any day who btw the kings just got the 3 seed after trading him. He’s a good player. Definitely not a dud like Dennis Smith Jr but the relentless ripping of Obi because he’s not Halliburton is crazy

Yeah I like the simple answer, Obi is not much of a rebounder.

Obi is a scorer who if got more touches offensively he would become more involved overall like most young players. Leading to quicker pace of development. As long as Randle is in the picture he won't get those touches. Him being able to step in incase of injury is great. But Randle doesn't get injured often and plays a ton of mins.

When its time to get that next contract. Obi will be looking for an increase in mins and role so he can get paid. Which will be next season.

A decision will need to be made on if they can or are willing to up trade Randle(Keep an eye on Philly and Embiid) and plug Obi in. Or trade Obi for a player that is more versatile and can get mins by playing in different spots.
