Knicks · Cuban Blames Mavs Season on Rick Brunson (page 1)

"Where it went south was when Rick took over, when the parent took over, or parents took over," Cuban said.

"We thought that we could turn him around," Cuban said when asked why Dallas didn't trade Brunson before last season's deadline. "We wanted to re-sign him and we wanted to keep the season going together. We thought, 'cause JB kept on telling us he liked being here.' JB never gave us an indication. It was only the parents that were the issue. Even the agent said, worst case, we can do a sign-and-trade."

I guess Cuban got psyched out the same way the Knicks did when Dallas tricked them into picking Ntilikina over DSJ.

Jalen has had nothing but kind words for the Mavs since leaving. Sorry to hear that a year later Cuban's ego won't let him move on.

Not sure if Cuban can figure out why the Knicks wouldn't want a sign and trade when they own Dallas's pick.

Cube taking a lot of heat and likely bit his tongue as long as he could. Lets not forget Knicks lost a pick for tampering.
I think his basis is he did not get a chance to counter and thought he could do a sign and trade. As did many of us until we opened the cap and he got nothing.
This was a team that went to the conference finals! Cube is frustrated as he could not beat the pull of family. Leon is his god father! His pops got hired. Its his 3rd gig with Thibs, so its not like he hired him just for Jalen.
franco12 @ 4/6/2023 5:30 AM
The better question is who forced them to trade for franchise killer Kylie? Was that Rick too!

And was it Rick’s fault too when they let Nash walk too?

I want to like Mark, but the dude got super wealthy partly by luck during the dot com era.

KFTV talk about Mark Cuban b-tching on Brunson at minute 37:11

LMAO

For some reason the YouTube function would not work for me.

It’s well known Dallas had their chances to lock up Brunson many times. Brunson said recently he wanted to stay. Cuban has no one to blame but himself and whomever was advising him.
Jimbo5 @ 4/6/2023 9:01 AM
Cuban having a hard time accepting totally that he screwed up, and when the criticism starts trickling in because of their poor showing, he needs to deflect and point fingers to absolve his negligence. Its funny how he submitted as evidence a message of his conversation with his GM to support his claim. Pathetic!

"And we would've gotten away with it, if it wasn't for that meddling Rick Brunson!"

Give Dallas the 2nd rounder and give Rick a raise!

You know, I don't mind him commenting now. He kept his mouth quiet when it happened. He let the NBA do their investigation. He watched the NBA dock NY a 2nd rounder. Now there is all this press about how bad at management Dallas is for 'letting Brunson go'. I think its fair to say, 'hey, we didn't let him go, we never had a chance to keep him'. Let the man defend himself and his organization. We still have Brunson.

Cuban was also free to offer JB a 30 million per deal via the media the day of the draft when the Knicks cleared salary. Complaining that "we didn't even get a chance to make a counter offer" seems ridiculous.

Would it be amazing if the Mavericks give us 11 and the difference was that they beat us that game we lost in the last minute. Our worst loss of the season gave us a lottery pick

We threw that game

I guess Cuban’s ego won’t let him see the possibility that Brunson didn’t want to play second fiddle to Doncic anymore. Just look at his growth as a player since he came to the Knicks. He should have been an AS this year and will surely make an all nba team, and, definite in the conversation for MIP as well as leading HIS team to the play offs. Cuban is delusional, Brunson made the right decision for his career.

Say what you want about his dad being an assistant coach but all of our players (Barrett *cough*
) have improved this year so the assistant coaches must be doing their jobs well. Cubes finally getting well deserved props as one of the worst meddling owners which he has earned repeatedly. What a d*ck

SergioNYK @ 4/6/2023 10:19 AM
Cuban is going to be even more sad when Luka demands to be reunited with Brunson in NY!

Well, thats entirely reasonable. No reason to do that on a website we don’t use our real names?
We get to call a billionaire a whiney bitch and say he a sore loser!
Such power!

Lets be real for a moment, could Dallas have cleared cap after knicks bid came in and matched it and given him the extra year?
Could dallas have gotten anything in return, even if not full value? You know, Like Drose and something? Or EF, then knicks give Brunson the 5 year contract?
Now, we all know what happend and we super happy. It cost us a 2nd round pick, which is still a bargain.
Oh, and we flaunted it by having our FO attend the playoff game!
In all, It thought Cuban handled it all reasonable and perhaps has valid issue. Why mention it now? Their fan base must be irrationally upset and as the face of the franchise must be catching a good deal of it.
THey have made some blunders the last few years and the sexual harassment issues are in the back of some still.

WHile not a basketball issue, its was a mess. Sound familiar?

In the rumor mill:

Pablo Laso could return to the bench next season as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. The coach from Vitoria has been recommended by Luka Doncic to replace Jason Kidd at the helm of the American franchise after a disappointing second part of the season that could leave them out of the playoffs.

Seems flimsy and no source cited.

Cuban needs to take a page out of Dolans book and leave the wheeling and dealing to the professionals in the front office. At least until that first rounder conveys, then he can do whatever he wants.

Cuban, like most owners dictate the direction of the team and finalizes because he signs the checks.
He cleaned house a few years ago and its just not known who is making the mistakes.
ITs his team and at the end of the day it don’t matter.
Kidd is not a bad coach but does his personality get stale after a few years? This year they tuned him out? If he loses Luka, he likely out. Thats logic in a players league and its been that way for some time.

Nalod Trolling the facts:
the 4 year 55mil extension for Finney-Smith was viewed by many a near bargain for Dallas as he was also a great fit. They they choose to trade him as part of the Kyrie deal was later determined.
As a good defender he too is missed currently.

One caveat here and quite frankly I don't understand the facts and nuance of the DFS signing. There was an indication that the Finney-Smith extension messed with the Mavs cap situation that somehow made it a ton more difficult to sign Brunson during the season (if not impossible). I'm not sure of the logistics but that was the implication.

Finney-Smith was a really good contract though

SergioNYK wrote:Cuban is going to be even more sad when Luka demands to be reunited with Brunson in NY!

Luka has three more years until he can opt out of the last year of his super max which would be right at $49mil.
He can ask out of Dallas but he holds really no leverage for two more years as to where he can demand. That reality is Dallas gets a better price for him if his new team and him agree on an extension. If not, the risk depreciates what dallas can get in return.
