Knicks’ Obi Toppin contract extension: How much will it take?

Frustrations arose with the New York Knicks’ season on the brink.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau had benched Obi Toppin for the third and fourth quarters of a Game 4 loss in the team’s second-round NBA playoff matchup against the Miami Heat. The result handed New York a 3-1 series deficit, one loss short of elimination. Meanwhile, the decision not to play Toppin led to an out-of-character moment for the usually mild-mannered power forward.

According to league sources who were present, once the final buzzer sounded Toppin aired his grievances to Thibodeau. The 24-year-old wants to play, and he wants to win. That evening, neither happened. An intense verbal altercation occurred between the player and coach as the group trekked to the Kaseya Center visiting locker room in Miami. It spilled into the postgame meeting once the doors closed.

The Knicks drafted Toppin eighth overall three years ago, but they haven’t treated him like a mid-lottery pick since. The team’s starting power forward, Julius Randle, has leaped into the All-NBA stratosphere over that time, which has left Toppin stuck on the bench more often than the organization figured he would be when it selected him while he was fresh off an NCAA national player of the year award.

On this occasion, as Toppin yelled at Thibodeau in front of teammates so fresh off a loss that they were still in uniform, assistant coach Rick Brunson stepped in to stand up for his boss. Toppin and Brunson got into it for a moment. Randle, Evan Fournier and Josh Hart next pulled Toppin aside to cool him off.

would love to see this fire from Obi on the court. I love his energy with his teammates and applaud his effort to develop an outside shot but he has no presence in the paint, never asserts himself

I can certainly understand Obi being frustrated and angry, but if this is true he crossed a line. Perhaps they've mended fences, but seems very possible he's a goner.

I believe all the quick hooks he got took its toll. Agree thats not how you handle it. Obi has been drama free since being drafted. Out of character if true. Had his fill I guess.

From the couch, I've questioned the Obi quick hooks. That said, Quick didn't get a lot of PT either and I am not hearing anything from him.

Maybe not let's get over it already. If it conveys as two second rounders and they are still bad those are two almost first rounders. It is what it is.

All the times " Obi was screamed out and he was yanked for no reason Obi should get a medal for not punching him

Yeah, so is the Knicks camp, so it works out for everyone

Jimbo5 @ 6/23/2023 7:55 AM
As soon as the knicks season ended, rumors of players the knicks are interested in have been emerging left and right, weeks later after the nba draft that long list have been whittled down into a handful most of whom im not excited for the knicks to trade for. Its good that for once this front office has exercised patience and commonsense but just like last offseason the knicks star player options have been slowly disappearing.

A part of me wants the knicks to take the next step in acquiring a star to help get the knicks closer to contention but with whats happening a part of me is happy that with the help of the FO patience, the knicks might be forced to run it back and let this young team develop and mature.

The only problem with running it back, if the young roster doesn't improve significantly, with all the possible offseason improvements of other eastern teams a reasonable expectation for this team can be the play-in. There are teams that will get stronger, others will want to opt to tank, hopefully there would be more teams opting for the latter so a run it back knicks team can still compete af a high level next season.

Its still the start of the offseason, i know the knicks can still land a star, if the Pelicans decide to trade one of their stars, im hoping ingram can find his way to the knicks. Other mid level moves i wont mind happening is trading for OG or Dejonte Murray. Outside of these 3,im not seeing an appeal.

Just doing a little scouting…

I like him. I’m just not sure whose minutes I would sacrifice.
