I wish we had the grimes from sl who was a secondary ball handler and played more fluently. He had some great games during year but ultimately was an under performer when it counts. He seems to robotic in his movements and he plays to fast. Is he going to be more like the guy from sl or stay as a limited robotic player? I really had high hopes and perhaps like iq he’s gonna breakout

He's young still. The game will slow down for him in time. He has the raw skills, basketball IQ and defensive grit to be a long-term rotation player OR excellent trade bait. Patience due here.

You can't overwhelm a younger player.
He played 46 games his first year, missing a large chunk of first part of season and end of season with injury and unfortunately got hit again beginning of this one.
This year he starts and plays gonzo POA D while spacing. That's his role and his real first big step in NBA and I think he aced it.
Both years he shoots 38% from distance with near 60% eFG (as a mile marker, our other high volume starting wing has never quite hit 50% eFG in his 4 year career).
You are asking for near all star level play from a #25 pick in his first full season.
This is what literal good development looks like.

Agree 100%
We as fans, tend to put unrealistic expectations on players. As the 25th pick, Grimes has already exceeded expectations with a promising future ahead. Can't ask for anything else.
I believe what we saw in SL and even in his HS highlights, are glimpses of his future.

Good points Martin — often wonder if we’ve wasted a year or 2 running so many sets thru Julius/RJ when Grimes is potentially a better ball handler, finisher, passer and shooter vs the other 2 guys.
I need to see Quentin physically & mentally slow down with the basketball - he remains wired too tightly and if we can give him more touches maybe he will naturally slow down. Such a great kid and a solid player.
Random thought — I’d like to get our hands on Josh Green from Mavs a bit of Quentin like player but maybe more explosive.
Agree with all the comments about him needing to relax but that is easier said than done sometimes. There are some guys who just see things differently, anticipate better and as a result always seem under control. Joker and Butler are totally at the top of this aspect of the game.
Quentin seems a breath away from utter chaos, out of control at points.
I really like Quentin but at the same time the 2 and 3 spot are clearly our biggest opportunities to upgrade. We need good defense but we also need willing and reliable shooting. Quentin really failed on that latter aspect. He beat out EF but IMO that was because EF's defense was too bad to tolerate for your 3d or 4th option on offense (JR, JB, RJ ahead of him). That's not enough IMO to cement his status
So yes to development, but let's keep our ears and eyes open for opportunity too.

Briggs - I think its unfair to compare Summer League to the NBA. When I look at Grimes, I see an undersized SG with a great first step, solid shooting form from 3 and great defensive skills. He shows maturity when playing against 19 year olds and can utilize his quick first step to create space. He gets to operate as primary ballhandler in SL if he desires. I don't think this translates to the NBA. He is the kind of guy you could line up 1-3 defensively depending on the matchup - but it is depending on the matchup. I also see a young player that hasn't 100% caught up to the speed of the NBA and gets caught on occasion picking up his dribble.
If the question is whether he will ever become an All Star? I think the answer is probably "no". I may catch grief for this assessment on this board, but I think he lacks the fundamental size of the Klay Thompson arch-type road to the All Star game. I think he lacks the athleticism of the Donovan Mitchell type SGs. He is a bit of an undersized Doug Christie. I don't think that keeps him from being a legitimate rotation player on a good team, but he will be facing size mismatches his entire career and I do not see him having the skill set to be an All Star in the face of those mismatches. He is more likely to be All Defensive team than an All Star Team.
But there is no rush and I don't see him being a huge question mark. I think the question mark are the expectations.

key is to look at those guys and their early years. Development takes patience, and even after that some time to break through.

I think at least in Joker's case it was evident pretty early as Denver dumped Nurkic to give Joker bigger role. Regardless this will be Grimes' year 3 -- aka shit or get off the pot year (as my mom used to say)!

I thought we all agreed on less coke and more weed?

This is probably the best comp of him I have seen to date. I agree with everything you've said in this post.
Grimes is just fine.
Issue is, as with most player judgements, ones expectations.
Some may think I am not a Grimes fan since I was calling for an upgrade at the SG position.
He is actually top three along with IQ and JB.
He just needs to continue to improve.
Issue was expecting him to be an All Star level player by year three.
Kid can flat out play D.
Became a starter fairly quick.
My concern was that he was not ready to be a key piece in the SL if we wanted to get to the finals.
Also that he does not get pushed too quickly.
Which may be why I saw him rush his mechanics and reads throughout the playoffs.
His production as a wing was decent.
His shooting percentage was good and his ability to create will improve with time and opportunity.
We must also factor in that he plays next to JB and RJ who do must of the driving from the wing.
Love Grimes and Knicks should keep him. Still feel we need a high level SG to get to next level though. Would prefer Grimes on second unit with IQ.

It's the Grimes that we just need to be patient on
You wanna guess what the best way to get extra shots and space to operate for a guy like Grimes? Not having a high usage player who is also a poor shooter on the roster

Removing the worst offense efficient player who is also not an above average defender is just a good move, not a round and round thing. It's now about waiting for the right time to make that move to get equitable return.
The FO already told us they are going to use RJ to upgrade.
hey, im a team player!!!!!
If I could recommend any workout to Grimes would be to dribble from the arc into midrange. Elevate and stay in the air as long as he can. Work on increasing his hang time when he goes for a pull up jumper or floater, before he shoots.
Eventually that will help Grimes change gears. As he only has one speed now..warp speed

So.... practice hanging in the air, defying gravity... like Wile E. Coyote after he runs off the cliff, but before he looks down...?
