Little known fact but his full given name is Keita OG-Insurance Bates-Diop
EwingsGlass @ 7/4/2024 5:57 PM
KBD = Taj 2.0?

Looking at his stats and profile, he feels more like a discount store version of OG. Considering that we already have OG, Hart, Bridges and Pacome for the small forward minutes, he is not a guy we need. I wonder if under trade rules we can immediately flip him elsewhere in a package for a backup center.
Since we have shed salary, does it mean that we can combine outgoing players in trades again?

They said as a minimum salary it doesn’t count. So could be added for value, but my guess from all the info is that he is here to bolster the bench. A Thibs pick.

Well, I hope that Thibs knows how to bang against the Embiids of this world with only Mitch and three guys who are 6'8".

Looks like our roster is complete:

Robinson
Sims
Hukporti
Randle
Achiuwa
KBD
Toppin
Anunoby
Pacome
Hart
Bridges
DDV
Brunson
McBride
Kolek

Diop has studied the Miami undercut move, don’t you worry

I kind of like D Smith Jr ---- still young, can get into paint and has become a terrific / physical defender.

Thibs had some solid praise for him as well. I think he and Deuce is given some minutes would be tough defensively together BUT maybe Deuce is the back-up point in their minds with Kolek in reserve.

I like Lowry in the playoffs but Smith Jr has surprised me -- didn't think he was a hard worker but I may have been wrong.

So what other $ (contracts) have to go into that remaining $16.9M (assuming no other trades),

I assume Kolek and 1st rounder $ have to go towards that and other that those 2 would it be using the $5M exception and Precious gets rest if we sign him?

Knixkik @ 7/4/2024 11:26 PM
The use of the shake Milton non-bird rights to sign and trade him slightly above a minimum contract is incredibly savvy and a fantastic use of resources.
ToddTT @ 7/5/2024 8:10 AM
Yeah but what have they done lately?

It's 8:10AM and we've heard NOTHING today!

Nalod @ 7/5/2024 9:27 AM
Do other teams do stuff like that but we don't really pay attention to it?
When Brock Aller does it, he is a god?

I'd think while Celtics are going to cap hell, they got a chip enroute.
Milwaukee? GSW has 4 chips in last 10 years and pulled off some savvy shit (and paid heavy taxes) but teams been smart.
Not always.
I like what knicks have done by giving themselves opportunities. Many we did not see or understand at the time. We are. susceptible to "letter grade" influence. By that, we judge a trade the moment its done rather than down the road.
Its how media gets read. I get it.

Super excited to see this team on the court!

VDesai @ 7/5/2024 9:30 AM
Keita Bates Diop has been mostly nothing, but had one very good season of 67 games in San Antonio. He randomly shot well from 3 and had a game where he went 11/11 for 30 pts. He may not do much for us, but it wasn't a bad extraction for the depth on this roster as we need a Backup 4. Given the roster crunch, he should make the team on a min salary and allow us to put Hukporti and/or McCullar on a 2 way.

Every team has cap guys but Brock had the reputation of being the best in the business before we signed him. He has done nothing but prove that reputation to be correct since. I have not heard of another team signing end of the bench guys last season to avoid hard capping themselves this season. With how much more complicated the cap situation is this CBA he will be even more important. Also remember how many contracts we had that decrease. Those decreases helped keep us in range so we could maneuver to avoid hardcapping.

I thought the $16.9m number would not be necessary for the 3 signed Knicks picks. I am not 100% on that

Only a cursory guess: there are a set group of teams that do it to a high degree and/but they have also been well positioned to do so. Knicks are certainly in that top group and have performed well at it; Brock absolutely goes the extra mile to get every ounce of return versus the shitty attitude of “winning” every trade.

For me, there is a difference at how the current FO does stuff and they are particular about how they go about it.

Everything I hear about teams over the 2nd apron is extremely bad. Why did the players ever agree to this.? This is about as close to a hard cap as you can get without one. No wonder the Clippers said no to a PG max. Once our team friendly deals expire our future is going to be bleak with all these things for repeat offenders over the 2nd apron. We need to make sure we are set for a long time before we go above the 2nd apron.

If things go sideways, they have to move Durant to Houston. It’s going to happen, something close to it.

Trading for Beal and allowing him to keep the no-trade clause was the final nail in the coffin. They will either get nothing in return for him or they will have to trade one of their actual stars. I guess like you say KD is the odd man out since he is older.

We really need that center before entering this second apron
