Dallas had to give up assets to sign their guy (and get some picks back), Knicks did not, so I am not sure it's in the same cost space? Hard to tell what the second round picks are but they also gave up an unprotected first round swap in 2030. That'll be on the next GM but could be UGLY.
Knicks didn't need a four year commitment for Williams with so many future picks. Dallas had to commit to four years. Dallas has done well but this is their team for the next 3 years. Wonder if it will work around Luka and Kyrie. But their pick should convey.

Evan Fournier's contract expiring should be valuable to get a rotation player who plays the 3/4 or 4/5. Team likely will be patient for a contract for a player who may have one more season then our SG. His value might be at its highest around the deadline. If we keep him on the roster to start the season, how do we keep him engaged ?

Dallas had to commit to the contract Williams wanted, just like the Knicks would have needed to do.
A guy that I am keeping my eye on is Justise Winslow. To be clear, he has disappointed and struggled to stay healthy. He's kind of like a past his prime star that forgot to have a prime. I don't mean that as harsh as it sounds, but he is the kind of guy that plays with some skill and every once in a while puts out a performance that makes you think he might be back. He passes well and shoots terribly. Plays good defense. Coming off surgery. I don't know. I want him to be good. I'd give a vet min here.
Another odd one is Jonathan Isaac. Been constantly injured to the point where I just feel bad for him. Not sure what his health update is, but if you are swapping Fournier's contract for Isaacs, at least if Isaac comes back healthy its to a position of need. Basically swap a SG placeholder for a PF placeholder assuming we can't do anything else with EF's contract.
I think there will be a lot of marginal PFs that are looking for min contracts that can eat up 10 to 15 minutes. Blake Griffin, JaMychal Green, etc..
Taj would be another good bench guy. Never really wanted him to leave.

Ja Green would be fine ona minimum. We hold onto Evan until a deal comes along. Evan won't get any burn at all so if he remains, he will have to be very professional.
My biggest criticism for the Knicks front office is not having enough young talent in the pipeline outside of the regular rotation guys. They have done great finding IQ, Grimes, McBride, and Sims, yet the last 2 drafts the Knicks have not been involved in the later stages of the draft. Opportunities to get good prospects on 4-year deals keeps the pipeline filled and we wouldn’t be asking this question about a Toppin replacement. Knicks saw the writing on the wall here and should have spent some cash to add a second round player who can play 3/4 or 4/5 in the last 2 years. They know what they want from that backup spot. The summer league team might be the least noticeable in terms of brand names we have ever seen. Knicks have the picks and the cash. We need another draft like the grimes, McBride, sims draft that replenishes the pipeline.
