Knicks · Remaining plausible scenarios for the offseason (page 1)

Knixkik @ 7/7/2023 9:35 AM
Knicks are locked into their top 9 right now with Brunson, Grimes, Barrett, Randle and Robinson starting and Quickley, DiVincenzo, Hart and Hartenstein off the bench. Roby, McBride and Sims will serve as depth behind the main rotation. It should be a fun group that is good but not great. There’s no easy upgrade in any area of the rotation right now.

I think the Knicks are waiting out an opportunity for 1 of 3 guys; Paul George, OG Anunoby and Joel Embiid. OG and PG are the cleanest fit. PG would be acceptable if it’s Barrett, Fournier and the right pick compensation. For OG I could see Barrett and a filler like Jeffries along with picks for OG and Thad Young. Both PG and OG fit cleanly in place of Barrett because they are both better shooters and defenders, and can also provide backup PF minutes with the second unit. Just a really clean fit. Embiid is the pie in the sky that would require Barrett, Quickley, Mitch and a kings random of picks but would essentially open 2 rotation spots the Knicks would have to backfill. Deuce could replace some PG minutes, but Knicks would have to find another wing, unless Fournier re-enters the mix. Either way, at this point these are the only guys who make a lot of sense as it stands right now. LaVine makes less sense now with DiVincenzo here, and harden and Lillard aren’t the guys.

It just comes down to either OG or PG becoming available at a slightly lower cost than the current perceived price, or Embiid demanding a trade and the Knicks putting in all of their chips. I think there’s probably a 50% chance of one of these scenarios coming to fruition later this summer, otherwise we will ride the current rotation into the season.

After seeing that RJ is putting in the work this summer, I've kind of backed off the need to upgrade.

Brunson/IQ
DDV/Grimes
Barrett/Hart
Randle/[Roby]
Robinson/Hartenstein

I'd love to see a value add to the roster with the Toppin TPE. I'd like to see us use Fournier's contract and excess picks to upgrade the roster. Give Hart and IQ their extensions. But I want to see what Barrett can deliver with the work he is putting in and want to see what Robinson adds to his game this offseason.

In short. Not desperate.

Did you think RJ was on the couch eating Ben and Jerry's?
If we don't see it, does it not happen?
He is scheduled to play for Canada National team this summer at the FIBA qualifying tournament.

The work RJ puts in isn’t the question. It will continue to be the fit with the rest of the starting 5 that is the question.

You in the gym with him? What does the team want him to work on? Is there a thought to move him back to the 2?
If I was high I love "chunky monkey" or "cherry garcia"!

Yeah, towards the end of the season, I thought the added bulk might have been costing him a little bit. I was hoping his offseason would be to cut back a bit. Kind of like they did with Mitch Robinson. Bulk up. Condition down. Without substituting my judgment for the teams, I am impressed with where he seems to be already. Just trying to give the kid and the coaches credit and admit that I want to see what a leaner RJ can do for this team. Its funny how four pictures changes my flippant mind.

I get you. What we don't know is what our FO and coaches think. I know the rumor mills and bloggers have to write stuff and we the fans eat it up. The OG thing takes on a new life especially when he signs with CAA!
There are lot of CAA players not knicks, and non CAA on knicks!
Media loves feeding us this stuff!!
Any PG13 for anything with RJ would bug me out. OG, less.
Im intrigued as said previously RJ to the 2 and OG to the 3 but that requires a likely trade to include the ever so loved IQ and his ever so soon to be paid status.
While not as polarizing as RJ, IQ has his fans and those that are not so high on him.
Don't matter what we think, its on FO and coaches. Perhaps I see IQ hitting his ceiling which is a slight on him. Im really happy with his development but more so with Brunsons ascension which crashed and busted his ceiling even more than anyone expected. Thus trading IQ is from that, not from him not being good to great!

RJ has done so much but not all at once. Perhaps this changes soon.

There's been some turmoil at the top of the conference with Milwaukee and Philly changing coaches and Boston losing Smart. If Knicks were planning on making any big trades, trading Obi doesn't make sense. I think the only move that gets done is possibly EF. No big trades.

I agree. I think turning EF, picks and potentially 1 other guard into a meaningful rotation piece is the more likely scenario

I'd pull that trigger. Surprised if they don't want picks also.

I think big moves still perfectly possible - think the league as always is being held up by big names (Lillard, Harden) potentially moving and either before/after those sort out still plenty of significant movement could go down —- Knicks particularly IMO are still looking for big move (ex PG discussion).

I think OG, Towns, LaVine all still potentially on table this summer- Embid seems a complete pipe dream to me. Would Morey ever deal him to Knicks and if yes at what astronomical cost.

Is there a video of RJ doing something especially fantastic?

I don’t understand everyone’s seeming fascination with OG. I just see a marginal role player who might have helped us in the past but doesn’t really offer upside on what we have on the roster today.

Key to us improving is having RJ develop a solid, reliable outside shot so he can punish teams that collapse on Randle and Brunson.

If he doesn’t have that this year, we should absolutely explore trading him.

Exactly. You are right. Og is redundant with Hart here. Similar players, OG is 3 inches taller though, and expects the max. I doubt that he gets paid that

First of all, we don't partake in drafts anymore, so picks are only valuable in trades.
Second of all, our drafting history is hit or miss. Or maybe I'm still thinking about the misses (Obi, Knox, etc)
Third of all, our picks are so protected, I don't care if we throw in a few picks.

As far as RJ goes, his best attribute is his off season workouts. His passion to be the best NBA player is what drives him. You can also trust what he does when nobody is looking.

Also, almost all NBA players are heavier in the beginning of the season, because they tend to loose weight by the end of the season. I don't remember who said this, but it makes since.

Whats the big deal with OG some are asking? Yes RJ might be the better player or higher ceiling, but OG is a better fit. Better defense, better shooter, and has the body size to play SF or PF. This is beneficial in Thibs short rotation scheme. Adding OG is like adding a SF and a backup PF in one player.

You high? I'm still laughing at that comment.

1) Trading out of a draft and not participating are two different things. If we didn't like who we had available at 19 and 21 and trade back to 25 and 37, that's not a lot different than trading 11 for 3 future picks. Temporally, you may not get the satisfaction of a rookie draft choice, but its a far cry from the days of trading all our picks for Eddy Curry.

2) Everyone's draft history is hit or miss. The fact that we only remember our mistakes is human nature. Do the Sixers remember Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel, etc... or do they only remember Joel Embiid. We have not drafted a superstar (that we are aware of) yet, so we think we draft poorly. But our team has Barrett (3), Robinson (36), Quickley (25), Grimes (25), McBride (36) and Sims (58). The thing is, if they picked anyone else in 22 or 23, either those players or these players would look like failures because there are not enough minutes to go around. If there were, Rokas would be here already.

3) I mean, there is a reason OKC thought that those three added up to 1 late lotto pick. I'm not throwing picks in, but right now that Wiz pick doesn't look like a great item and that Detroit pick looks weak, and that Dallas pick could be anywhere with Irving as their partner for Docic.

I agree on OG, but want to see what Barrett comes to camp with. His conditioning has him looking like a breakout candidate this year. I'm moving Fournier and picks to finish my 10 man rotation, in my opinion.

Alpha1971 @ 7/10/2023 7:01 PM
Trading for Paul George reminds me of trading for Antonio McDyse. Trading for OG feels like trading for Steven Francis.
