I was a big Obi fan - unabashedly would talk about "if only he was given a chance". He got a chance and Indy decided the same thing as Thibs. Still like Obi and will root for him after this series, but fandom makes some of us (willingly) blind.

More importantly, we dumped Obi to clear money for DiVo, yes? Does anyone still believe we'd be better with Obi instead of Donte?

I'm not sure Obi survives the hits DDV took from Embiid. I'll root for Obi when he's not playing us, but he kinda soft.

Obi seemed to be done here after his argument with Thibs over playing time went public.

DLeethal @ 5/4/2024 8:13 PM
Anyone that was wishy washy got the boot. It is what it is. Can’t argue with the results. Obi wanted to go somewhere else and Thibs wasn’t gonna expand his role. Hindsight after a season ending Randle injury and Bogie injury is silly.
DLeethal @ 5/4/2024 8:15 PM
Knicks have next offseason to plug the gaps on the bench and will do just fine with our picks and MLE.

Win an amazing series and that means it's time for...Obi Regret!

Newsflash: Bojan doesn't play defense.

I'm saying the Knicks need warm bodies to continue in the post season.

Obi wasn’t a good fit and Knicks wanted to do him a favor since he was CAA. Really not much else to it. Knicks can always trade for a solid backup.

Bogs actually plays defense. He knows his assignments. He is just limited

Better newsflash: Bojan does something very very positive in his role with the second unit and it outweighs his defense.

Allow me to correct myself. Bojan can't play defence.

We are not going to change the past. I am over trading him but don't tell me he was not a positive for this team. He had one of the best +/- on the team. Had good averages when he got good time even though that was rare. The truth is Thibs needs specific thing from all bigs that are not Randle. For that reason he did not fit.
ESOMKnicks @ 5/5/2024 5:23 AM
We cannot change the past. We can only sit back and watch the past come back to bite us in the ass.

I feel that Indy is going to be a lot tougher for us than Philly (not to say that Philly was a cakewalk). Younger, more diversified offensively, more speed, more strength, more energy. Can we keep up with them? Can we run with them? Can we make them pay for keeping Obi in the game on the defensive end? Can we stop him from hurting us with his full court leaks and three pointers, the way he has been hurting our opponents last year and the way he continues hurting his opponents this year, including in the playoffs?

As good as our FO is in getting steals in free agency, we give up too much value in trades.

franco12 @ 5/5/2024 7:11 AM
would have been nice to have had 10 pts at .570% at 2 & .400% off the bench version of Obi that Indy got- but he wasn't going to do that.

And the move is probably more than simply getting a better player in DDV and also about what we can do this off season with OG.

VDesai @ 5/5/2024 8:05 AM
Didnt we need to deal Obi to free up enough money for Donte? Didnt that prove to be a good enough move to stop asking this question?

The only debate was why we got so little back for him, not why did we trade him.

SergioNYK @ 5/5/2024 9:36 AM
Should have traded Obi out West. I think he's going to play well in this series and we really don't have a good match up for him. We have to be conscious of his leak outs and guard against those dunks that energize a team and help change momentum.

He also has to box out because his man will crash the boards. So it’s the few leek outs vs multiple offenses rebounds and second chance shots.

Which one impacts the team more? Something has to give.

Make them take tough shots and there will be more rebounds and less fast breaks. Allow them to take open shots and that high efficiency negates our rebounding edge. So tough (ball denial) man defense will slow down those fast breaks and the pace will be slower.

3 years of not letting Obi play through mistakes. The relationship between Thibs and Obi looked irreparable after year 2. Who knows, maybe Thibs just used him as an example to keep all the other yoots on the path. Year 3 the situation was untenable and Obi had to go. The return is a joke. The summer before we were rumored to be as=king 2 FRP's. Obi was worth more than a salary dump. The entire situation was mismanaged which is what chafes me. Obi has been showing signs of finally figuring it out. Just in the knick of time at the ripe old age of 26.

Obi Toppin is not striking the least bit of fear in this team lol. Hart can guard him, Obi plays like a guard.

Thibs has earned benefit of the doubt. He’s proven to be an elite developer of talent and an elite identity builder. Obi didn’t fit what he wanted, there can be a myriad of reasons for that. Obi had a great few games in the series but he’s been the same underwhelming Obi all season for Indy.
