The pounding JB gave the Suns... It could be the inspiration for a new episode of Law & Order:SVU.

Having a top heavy salary team and no depth. Aka: looking like PHX did last night.

This thread is an embarrassment, best Knick we've had since Ewing, and a leader on top of it. 26ppg on great efficiency and only keeps getting better. If you don't want to max Brunson who do you want to max? 29 other teams would gladly max him.

The embarrassment is your bing bonging after a good game and did not really read what my intent was.
This was not about this year, or even next, its about team construction, salary constraints, and how it works in this era. Brunson was a reach at what we paid him and in short order it was a bargain.
Next time his money comes up he has a valid ask for a lot more.
Personally I hope this never ends but somewhere between where he is playing now, and a longer term reality is a logical place for him to get paid. If he is the Best player on our team and paid like a full blown star then we might have a defined ceiling.

Puff your chest out after a 50 point masterpiece and call this an embarrassment?
You mentioned Ewing? How'd that end for everyone? Remember, that was a different CBA structure, but when we paid our star out of fear of him leaving, and he declined, it was not good for him or us.
I want Jalen here a long time but Im not naive to think this type of production goes into his mid 30's.
For now his pops is here, and uncle Thibby and its all really good. Im enjoying the hell out of it!
Fucking brilliant move by our FO getting this kid!
While we here, I loved Jules game (save for a few turnovers) and RJ dialing up in 26 minutes not over reaching.
Brunson was the star but Jules and JR were awesome! Defense? LOL.........Another time.
Now, if we can go into Staples and beat the clips again!

it was ridic from the get and I said so from the get, last night just further elaborates how silly and unappreciative it is.

Brunson is going to go down as one of the all time great knicks, if you don't want to max him 29 other teams gladly will. Worrying about his mid 30's when he just turned 27 is just dark seeking.

blkexec @ 12/16/2023 1:10 PM
I’ll play along Nalod.

I love Brunson but……

When are we getting a playmaker?

When are we getting some wing defenders?

When will Leon realize we need to build around JB?

JesseDark @ 12/16/2023 2:50 PM
We need to make sure we stuff the all star voting box for this guy! Voting begins in about a week.
BigDaddyG @ 12/16/2023 5:46 PM
Brunson has increased his scoring averages for 6 consecutive years. Is it possible he break Derek Harper's record of 8? Also want to add that Harper also played for the Mavs before moving on to greater things with the Knicks.
Nalod @ 12/17/2023 10:50 AM
I love Brunson But I as KD said we are a perfect marriage and Im not sure does this else where and I doubt 29 teams would be lining up to max him. They don't have max.
When the time comes I hope its all a good long term proposition that includes room to make sure he is surrounded, or he is part of a surround that is winning.
Its a great story thus far but it has a ceiling.

Have you checked the list of Max guys around the league lately?

yes. In what context do syou speak of? Some are well deserving. Then there is a fall off and the are not.
I love our approach thus far and have no bad contracts for some time.
Its about the future, not present or past.

Mostly, that if you look at current market value, what is out there and compare it to JBs production and age, maxing him is not absurd. Considering he is proving he can shine in the NYC spotlight. Something many may and have had difficulties doing so.
The answer for me is always the alternative. If we can replace JB with someone making less and who can produce at same rate, great. But who is that?

As mentioned before, this is my opinion since I see JB as more of a Kyle Lowry than those you mentioned. Think he does not need to maintain a high level of athleticism to stay productive.

Don't get me wrong,, its not about paying him or letting him walk. Its about the right price so its all good.
The future with this kid? "It all gets sorted out on the court!"......
Im a big fan and enjoy this "BrunsonBurnerSanity" as its all good.

Yeah. Me too. Has proved me wrong. Thought he was not the traditional PG I prefer. But he is a gamer. Took advantage of the opportunity to be next level type of player.
Hopefully, he likes it here and will keep the salary at a workable point.
Guess we will wait and see what happens, It will also depend on what's out there when his contract is up.

Mavs let two time All star (with Dallas) Steve Nash walk for nothing. Granted, they did eventually get a chip with JKidd so in some fashion the cap space was used elsewhere 6 years later. Nash was 30 and had back issues. But......Wins back to back MVP's in PHX under MDA.

Why they do that? They hit the wall and it was thought he and Dirk would not break thru. Maybe they were right? Nash with MDA and the pace they played at were made for each other and I doubt Nash gets the MVP's in Dallas.

Dallas was brilliant to take Brunson 33rd (they traded 3rd pick (trae) and protected pick drafted Luka!! but the salary rules bit them in the ass!
ATL used that 2019 pick from Dallas on Cam Reddish.

Also from 2019:

Atlanta has acquired New Orleans No. 4 pick in the draft for No. 8 and 17 and 35, league sources tell ESPN. Pelicans are sending Solomon Hill, No. 57 pick and a future second-round pick.

I mentioned that as its expensive to move up in the draft. ATL picked Hunter with the 4th pick, right behind RJ. ATL made some savvy moves but kind of did not execute well. Trae turned out very very good, but he not Luka. Few saw Luka as being this good and ATL saw trae as more of certainty. A franchise that was floundering could not afford the risks? Perhaps.

In a world were we blew picks with Frank, Knox and perhaps OBI (not total busts, but 0-3 did not extend) but we did really well with Mitch and IQ, it kind of worked itself out.

Capped with the unlikely brilliance of FA Randle and Brunson. These were FA signings that far exceeded the money paid.

Perhaps we see Brunson decline his option early (can he??)and sign a long term deal that makes sense for all.

There is no "But" -Brunson is a winner, if there was one player that's Championship caliber on this squad it's him. Anything short of locking him up long-term for the max or near max would be a collosal failure. His best quality is not his 3 point shooting( one of the best in the league) it's not his scoring in the playoffs ( again , one of the best)it's not him drawing charges( the best in the league)it's not his footwork ( probably the best in the league)and there are other aspects where he is elite. What I like the most about him is that he is never rattled. His mental game is just outworldly. He never takes possessions off, doesn't get into it with the refs, he just keeps coming no matter what. I love that

Ram, nobody wants to see him leave. As I said.......

"Don't get me wrong,, its not about paying him or letting him walk. Its about the right price so its all good."

In my world I don't want him to be our best player. Why? For all the reasons Ram said.
