I'm in the dumps with this trade. One of the worst feelings as a fan is when players you like and become attached to get traded. Especially for players who aren't as good. OGA is the most overrated player in the league imo. An overrated role player who will ask and likely get All-Star level money. He's 3 years older than RJ too.
Say what you want about RJ. I know he never lived up to the hype and expectation of being the 3rd overall pick but it wasn't due to lack of effort. RJ worked hard, was a great teammate, no drama and gave us some nice moments and helped change the culture. We get swept by the cHeat if it wasn't for RJ in that series. Same with IQ! Another player who is better than OGA imo. Was graded a D + when drafted and went on to develop into the best 6th man in the league. Another kid who was all basketball, hard working, improved every season and was getting better.
Achiuwa and Flynn are garbage. This makes us a playin level team unless there is a follow up trade quick.
Sad day.

Not with Quickley involved. The team is worse. The writing was on the wall when they signed Donte though. Knicks didn't want to pay Quickley. Thats a bad choice.

OG is definitely not garbage.
However, always question a player who came from a so called well rostered team who just did not do much. OG was surrounded by really good players and they did nothing.
Also feel we gave up a dog in IQ. One who played well in this jungle, we call NY, for a guy who seems afraid of his own shadow despite having lots of talent.

RJ and IQ are my two favorite Knicks. I think the importance of having guys that truly want to be here is valuable. I hope OG has that same passion

When was the last time Toronto had a legit roster? This idea that Toronto is this really good underachieving team is a myth. OG and Siakam are good players on a bad team.

Agreed. Really thought the wing log jam was going to be resolved by trading RJ and Grimes.
Did not expect the Knicks to let one of their most productive draft picks go. or
Let's hope that OG becomes that GLUE guy the SL needs and that Grimes steps up in second unit.

Roster management played a part, I think. Those Toronto teams were oddly constructed. OG was a dog in the games I've seen, he's just not gifted scorer off the dribble. As for IQ... It's tough But this team had too many guards and I'm doubtful IQ was pleased with the situation. At least we got something for him.

Good chance we got better IMO. We will see if others can fill the scoring void. But we had a lot of good players playing 20 mpg. So we are technically supplanting some of what we lose with RJ and Quick with not only OG but "more" of guys we already have that are good like DDV, Hart, Grimes.

I need time to get my thoughts together on this trade, but just remember, Toronto offered him that 4 year max and he turned it down. He wanted more opportunity, and just got traded to the same situation.
He’s CAA. He will be extended
I am going to be honest, I am not sure what is worse. Signing him to a contract north of the 30 mil he turned down, or not signing him and letting him walk for nothing. This is not angood situation in my eyes.
You are right that OG can be an UFA. Do you really think that Leon and OG's agent really haven't worked out the details of the next contract yet?
OG's agent is Leon's son.
So sign him after we get Mitchell or Giannis next offseason
You do not understand the Salary Cap.
Projected cap is $137 million next season. After OG opts out and EF is essentially cut we are about $30mil under.
To get who?
$30M Randle
$25M Brunson
$15M Mitch
$18M Josh
$11M DDV
$5M Grimes
That's $101M
You need to release iHart, Precious, and then the cap holds and draft picks.
So maybe you are actually at $110M. For #20M in cap space?

Devo needs to come off the bench and fulfill the 6th man role. Grimes should start again.
So how good are the secondary pieces we received Precious and Malachi?

I'm iffy on this. We probably have a dynamite defensive unit with Grimes/OG but also DDV's shotmaking has been great for Randle and the starters on O.
I hate giving up IQ, but I like the trade of Barrett for OG. OG is a better defender and will fit better with the starting unit. This clears out our logjam at SG and allows Grimes and McBride to play a larger role. If we can get OG to sign the 4 year extension today, then this trade was decent. Not great but not terrible.
Grimes has got to now fulfill some of that promise so DDV can come off bench.
JesseDark wrote:So how good are the secondary pieces we received Precious and Malachi?
Precious give us defensive versatility and can be rotation piece. I'm not sure Flynn is better than Deuce.

Siakam, Barnes, Van Vleet, Trent Jr. Not scrubs.
Point was, he did not make that caliber of players over the top. How is he going to do this with this roster?
martin wrote:Grimes has got to now fulfill some of that promise so DDV can come off bench.
Yeah, I was wondering about that. Does DDV make more sense coming off the bench now for bench scoring? Is it Deuce time?

I could be wrong but I think OG is only eligible to sign 2 year deal right now and then 4 year deal on 7/1.

This trade gives us the one thing have needed all year, some 6’8” type defensive players who can match up with guys like Tatum. RJ was not big enough and is only an average defender. OG and Precious Achiuwa gives us two defensive players who can fill that role.
