In regards to this, a few things. First, don't let Maxey get the ball in the first place, next, if he does, double him full-court press from the inbound or simply 2 shot foul him. Make Embiid or anyone else make the shot. We blew a game where he was human. I don't expect Maxey to do this every game, but Joel will be better the next game, so we gain no advantage, another dogfight is ahead on the road.

A trend I hate with the Knicks is they let the Sixers press JB from the jump, while we let the ball roll to half-court, giving the opponent extra time most games in the 4th, when they should be pressing and killing every second when we are ahead late. Maxey hit that dagger with 8 seconds left, 8 seconds they could have easily killed throughout the 4th quarter. I understand getting back on D, but get Deuce on Maxey and work him all the way down the court and kill extra time when ahead. Sometimes simple things make a big difference.

I don't think anyone was expecting Maxey to shoot it from 45 feet. He obviously did that to avoid the foul situation. And I also think you probably live with not fouling if the guy is gonna shoot it from 45 feet.

nycericanguy @ 5/1/2024 11:42 AM
That was the old Mitch there, biting on fakes and jumping into 3pt shooters. he's done a great job of cutting that out but that was such a horrible time to regress.

Brunson was uncharistirically sloppy in the OT as well.

we had so many unforced silly TO's late, but so did PHI. cant really harop on it just move on and put it away tomorrow.

Imagine how many excuses Embiid would've made if in the same spot. I'm proud of the way Mitch handled that and himself. He is what he is and we need to accept it in it's totality. He never should've been on the floor THAT late and up 6. At that point, we should've had our best perimeter defenders (and ballhandlers on the floor) because 3s were the only thing that could hurt us....and they did.

Press Maxey halfcourt and beyond and he'll beat any defender we throw at him. Worse still, that strategy would stretch our defense and allow us to not be set and be disjointed, which a team like the Sixers could feast on.

Maxey played like a stud. Personally i think we need to do better in denying him the ball. Once he gets it he's a problem. Play him tight, he blows by. Sag and he shoots.

We're all disappointed today because game was in our hands. We just need to regain our composure and go out again. Our team, and plan, is better than theirs. Their plan is maxey needs to play like superman

I personally wanted the no.2 seed but all 30 NBA arenas represent a homecourt advantage for us. We just have the good graces to allow denizens of those cities to occupy them when the New York Knicks are not in town.

KnickDanger @ 5/1/2024 12:26 PM

We really did. It was a team brani fart. OG also had a couple of bad TOs late in the game that would have sealed it. They should have also called that foul on the OG breakaway dunk.

The craziest thing happened during the last night series. Whenever I turn to the game we are ahead and then as I watch it seems they start loosing. so I turn the game off. I check the score from my cell phone and they are ahead again and then they start loosing again when I watch so I turn the game off again and on my cell phone it said 28 seconds to go and we were ahead by 6 points so I said nothing can go wrong now so I turned the game on again knowing we had the game in the bag then Maxie scored a 3 pointer with a foul and then he scored another 3 pointer so can I be a Jinx

I am sorry. Its hard to be "angry" at Mitch. You can be angry with the outcome. But not Mitch. That man could hardly walk and was staying with Embiid (who also could hardly walk, but was picking his moments to try and impact the game. He put everything he had into trying to block that shot and made a mistake. Too much effort is a mistake I am willing to live with. If Brunson hits the flagrant Ft. If Hart makes both FTs. If OG makes his FTs. If they don't have stupid turnovers. If Embiid doesn't get the elbow to elbow call on OG even on review. There are countless failures that took place in under 45 seconds of clock. Maxey outplayed the entire Knicks team in that time frame. If anything, I am blown away by MaxeyPad. That dude had ice in his veins and was just killing the Knicks all night.

nycericanguy wrote:somoene said before these are really the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the east and i completely agree.

PHI was 34-8 with Embiid this season, better win % than even BOS. and when he came back late in the year even with the bum knee they went 8-0.

PHI was really the team I wanted most to avoid. not b/c we cant win but b/c thats a very tough and grueling 1st round series.

right but consider what you're saying in the context of other statements you made. WOuldn't you want to face them with home court? or were you hoping and praying someone else would knock them off and if so who and when?

as it turns out we have HCA and were up 3-1 and now 3-2 in large part because of it. Huge pressure against Philly beating us three straight. We played them well all year w and wo the crybaby.

As it turns out we might still get lucky and Orlando is showing spunk and might face Celts who they have played really well.

^^ this is exactly right

we need to regroup and just do what we do. there are a lot of things that could have closed it out for us last night -- including Donte hitting some shots

Philly needed an unreal performance by Maxey. We won't see the 4 point play and the logo shot in the same game for the rest of our lives

NYStateOfMind @ 5/1/2024 1:57 PM
So you mean, Maxey beating anyone off the dribble for a layup late in the game wasn't preferable and doesn't make him work harder? Or we let them roll the ball to half court, let him pick it up, and shoot wide-open 3s, the only shot that could catch them up to a 1-point deficit if he hit 2 without a foul? Logic says you waste the clock and let him earn the running 3 vs the feet-planted ones he got IMO.

Even if he hits miraculous 3s over Deuce, we are still up 1 with 8 seconds to play or less if you press him on the inbound if not no time left. The guy was on fire, you get the ball out of his hand if you can't, you work him the full length of the court and make him be a hero. Instead, we let him be a hero mostly wide open and preserving the clock. That is how you can and they did lose a game. So many other factors, like timeouts after the 4-point play, etc.

Or how about this, let him drive around people, double him, force him to kick it, and let ANYONE else beat you?

NYStateOfMind @ 5/1/2024 2:01 PM
Also, it doesn't stretch our d, the other 4 get back. You make him work the ball up and kill time, then you double. Who was going to feast? No one else was hot. Other than Maxey who shot 58% from deep, the rest shot 8-27 for 30%. Let them feast with 30% or an easy dunk, that wins this and most games. They also shot 52% on non-3pt shots, still worse than Maxey at 58% on 3s and 56% on 2s. Math don't lie.

Lastly, it was a 3-possession lead, even after the 4-point play, they still could have forced them to need 2 more possessions with a foul before the shot attempt, and that 3rd possession would have had 6 seconds or less. Plus Maxey wasn't great from the line, 5 for 8 or 63%, make him earn it.

Agree 👍 with most response reply, however even with game
Closer in final minutes Maxey was firm SOLE
Reasons them 76ers B_stards was having a chance to steal
Win! Drives to hoop, jumpshots, drawing folks etc

AT end you:
1] can't foul guy in air to hit 3pt & get
To foul line.
2] you can let him get off shots at will
Thus completed CHOKE job of game less
Than 30 sec 6 point lead 😈

If Maxey needed 3s or 2s pt., and making
Shots. YOU NEED to hold the man & slow
Him down by letting his butt make free
Throws

Btw Tom Thibs didn't even know Maxey had
Gone to Free Throw line in last critical
Minutes and missed! Several free Throws!

Btw Maxey was 5 of 8 FT Stats, thus
Despite Thibs was screaming for fouling
76ers ..IT DIDN'T GET DONE!

Coach and Team is blame
#NEXTGAME6 is knicks sole hope😶😑😟

I think we have every right to be angry at Mitch cause fouling in that situation is the worst thing you can do. He had to be smarter and aware of the situation. No point in leaving your feet to try and try to block in that situation. Give up a 3 if you must but do not foul or make contact under any circumstance.

That being said, I'm not just angry at Mitch. I'm angry at the entire team. Even angry at Brunson for missing 3 FT's and throwing the ball away and coming up short in the clutch. This was a choke job that the entire team contributed to it and that might have ended our season. We'll see what happens but it's opened the door to unnecessary agony and stress.

NYStateOfMind @ 5/1/2024 2:28 PM
He shouldn't have been on the floor. Embiid down 6 wasn't the threat, it was Maxey. You get Precious in there, no reason not to, it worked before. McBride hit a big bucket, what does Philly do, they call a time-out. We give up a dumb 4-pt play, do we call a timeout, no. Maxey heaves a 34-footer, do we call a timeout, no. 8.1 seconds left, you call time and advance it. Also, would have preferred Jalen stop short and take the jumper he hits at a high clip, not that reckless drive into 2 defenders as the last shot. This team often takes a poor final game or late second-shot clock attempts.
