Quite frankly, another possibility is that the Knicks picked him is because they like his ceiling and hoped he would take a few years before he came over. Wouldn’t be surprised if an effort to change his mind was going on.

being win now doesnt mean EVERY pick has to be a NOW player, smart teams can balance now and the future and I think thats what we did with that pick.
Let him practice, sit and learn for 2 years the way we did with Deuce and look what we have now. SPURS were always great at winning while drafting for the future too.

There was no pick at #24-#26 that was going to crack the rotation. They also weren't in a position financially to trade the pick for a proven veteran. Getting the youngest player in the draft with some of the highest upside who they can be patient with is a pretty logical choice within those circumstances. Especially with 3 draft picks around the same range. Can afford to gamble, and were def feeling lucky.
They probably would have liked to have traded up for a different guy they liked under different circumstances. But cap wise it they weren't trying to do that.

Some other options I'm seeing on the internet ate trading Randle or Robinson- both of which seem like mistakes. Bridges will start at 2 and DDV will move to the bench so I don't see how many more minutes will be available for McBride anyway.
The biggest factor will be if another team offers IHart a contract to big too refuse.
Centers making 17-24 million are Nurkic 19, Vucevic 20, Capela 22, Draymond Green 24, and KP at 29. Add Claxton to that list as well. I'm skeptical IHart will get a big FA offer.

My understanding is the Knicks have the moves lined up, they just need iHart to accept and that in part, he needs/wants to see offers Sunday 6pm or whenever FA starts.
For instance, they’re not going to trade McBride if iHart isn’t staying. So I think that is where things are.

Mitch ain't the guy - Knicks fans overrate him - he is bad at basketball.
Seems like a great guy - nice kid but the lack of development offensively and the injuries are harsh --- his offensive rebound rate looks great but shouldn't it given he literally has no other skill offensively and hangs around the rim all night. Even screening he is piss poor at.
