I don’t get why so many articles talk about pay cut, discount or team-friendly deal… Brunson took the absolute max contract he could sign this year, not $1 less than the max.
What he could have gotten next year is really anyone's guess. Injuries, drop in production, off-court activities… so many things can go wrong. Plenty of examples everywhere.
So yeah, great deal for the Knicks but no discount whatsoever. Brunson took the MAX, Mikal will take the MAX.
The only one who really didn’t take the max was OG !

Jalen absolutely did not maximize his earnings in the short term; there is absolutely a variation of contracts that would have gained him more money that he did not pursue. His contract is absolutely team friendly.
Your definition of max is not the same as others are talking about. You also have no clue what Mikal is going to do because Mikal does not know what he is going to do.
All the above can be true at the same time.

The pay cut formula is quite simple:
- Brunson took a 3 Year Deal with a 4th year player option worth $156.5 M
- If he waited a year he could have signed a 5 year deal worth $269.1 M
Yes - he maxed out on his current earning potential, but you have to look at the bigger picture as most NBA players wait to become free agents to maximize their leverage and up front earning potential.
Everything is a risk whether he signed now or waited until next year. You appear to be only focused on the negative Risks. There are positive risks as well. What if the Knicks win a Championship and he continues to ascend to MVP level? He could have become a free agent next year at $60M+ per season.
The reason people are saying he took a cut or helped the team is because the likelihood of a model citizen, team leader and top performer at peak NBA performance age suddenly dropping off a cliff is slim. Most NBA players in his position would have waited a year for the bigger payday up front. In terms of injury - unless it's career ending, not sure that would derail his future earning potential all that much. Not sure how may career ending injuries actually happen for 27 year olds, but is has to be pretty small odds.

The other estimate is if the Knicks are actually willing to pay $80.7 M per season for any one player or if they agree to a lower salary. Only time will tell.
Carmelo Anthony stating he wouldn’t have given the Knicks the discount Brunson did.
Of course he wouldn’t.
Bottom line is Jalen is playing with his besties, obviously gets on well with is dad, his coach and team president are practically family. If he does this and they win a chip they ALL bask in the glory. Lets see how it plays out and if he eventually gets that big number but maybe its all enough money.
Melo eventually never lived up to the last contract and he and the team was miserable.
Nobody won but he did make more money. Im not going to fault Melo on that but since he bought it up its fair game.
Im sure he'd have rather won a chip and had that legacy but he made his choices and seem ok with it. Never faulted him for NOT going Free agent either.

It's wild to me that 3 years ago Brunson was in the blob-mentality thinking of 4 years at $104M was a gross overpay but today iHart's 4 years at $74M is not nearly enough generational wealth and yeah yeah I get the diff.
Those guys who only got extended in the $100M range about 7 years ago may not have enough generations of generational wealth that they'll never have need to ever worry about anyway.

To be fair, most wouldn't.
today Draymond is even talking about Brunsons money. Slow news cycle options become news.
Brunson understands NOT signing involves risk. Also the ugly part of the NBA is if your stats drop, your earning might also.
Jalen had a great season and had to carry the team for long stretches. Its not sustainable. With Max money comes max pressure and if you take the money perhaps your team is not as strong. Players wear down, get injured, and he is a ittle guy. If he eats cap the team might not be as talented or subsequently successful and guess what, the money gives license to media and fans license to beat you up. John wall, Melo, Marbury, Westbrook, Ewing, are just a few that were caged by a massive contract. There is a downside to it. Your expected to keep it up. Its why you get the max money. Is it fair? Of course not. Injury or Father Time has a say. Not all players age the same.
But if taking less now (not forever) helps the team maintain more talent he does not have to carry the load. Maybe a chip and less money is a happier life? We don't know. No two careers are the same. An NBA chip to his gaudy resume winning in High School, and in college (also player of the year!) likely puts him in HOF. A chip in NYC after a drought puts him in rare air.
