Knicks · What's the new 9 man rotation ? (page 5)

DLeethal @ 10/4/2024 12:39 PM
It's possible Precious starts and Sims gets an everynight role until Mitch gets back. But that means Payne/Kolek both hitting the bench and I don't really see both of those guys not being in the rotation.

I'm basing this off how much it appears Thibs mentions him, and makeup of the rest of the roster. Shamet has also been a starter on good teams before. I think Josh is this teams Iggy/Warriors 6th man. There's just not enough bodies who can play forward. I think that's the plan all along. He will obviously be the finisher. I also think we stockpiled guards and we intend for them all to play to some degree. Thibs apparently mentions Payne a lot as well.

Jalen - Shamet - Mikal - OG - KAT
Payne/Kolek - Deuce - Hart - Precious/Mitch

This rotation probably has the best balance and makes the most sense. It's hard to see us get 4 guys off the bench any other way unless your starting Shamet or Deuce.

It’s not bad. I just love Hart off bench and he matches Iggy perfectly.

Thoughts on switching Deuce and Shamet? Bit more defense next to Brunson.

You also put Deuce in a position to really excel if he is ready for it. Read into excel how you like

Precious needs to improve his shooting, that's for sure. But let's say he plays the 5 with four shooters on the floor it still affords the team more space then Mitch or Simms. At least Precious doesn't have to stay in the dunkers spot like Mitch or Simms. I seem to recall Precious set up at the corner from time to time and that pulls the opposing big out a bit.

It's also gonna be hard with Hart in the game. As of now, the most viable "5 out" lineup is probably going to have to feature Deuce as the 2.

For their careers Precious shoots 29% from the corners vs. Josh at 40%. Leaving Precious alone in the corners to shoot 3s is a winning strategy, leaving Hart is a losing one.

Couldn't find the career stats but Josh was below average from three points zone last season except for the right corner three at 36%.

While I’ve always thought Hart will be the starter at SG, I accept that we are short handed at Forward. And unless his shooting improved significantly, it defeats the purpose of a 5 out. I can appreciate it if we had a slow start getting guys familiar.

Brunson/Hart/Bridges/OG/KAT. - So, Hart brings needed rebounding to this group at the cost of elite shooting. Swiss Army knife of a player. Had hoped to run Bridges at SG and OG at SF, just to create positional size advantages.

Brunson/McBride/Bridges/OG/KAT - I mean, McBride shot 40%. His 6’9 wingspan wreaks havoc in the passing lanes. This line should see a ton of time regardless, but it’s got 37%+ 3 point at every position. Probably our best 3&D lineup.

Brunson/Shamet/Bridges/OG/KAT - 3 ball all day. I can see the DDV shooting replacement. But, by that logic, why not Kolek? Not familiar enough with Shamet yet, but seems like he gives up a little athleticism.

Brunson/Bridges/OG/KAT/Robinson - I mean, this lineup is BIG and a ton of defense. This is the lineup I’d expect to see against Embiid.

Brunson/Bridges/OG/Achiuwa/KAT - Among my favorites cause it keeps Bridges and OG at the wings. Achiuwa still has upside but the 1 year contract makes me think this would only be a placeholder. A little improvement from Achiuwa and this lineup has among the highest potential.

Brunson/Bridges/OG/Dadiet/KAT - Dadiet’s not showing ready yet, but this has to be in their minds over the next 4 years together. But I think we will see Kolek and Dadiet running the second unit next year as the real timetable.

Take with a grain of salt but this is partially driving my theory and also in response to your “why not Kolek?”

Shamet has started on playoff teams. Thibs respects that kind of stuff. Deuce can start as well but IMO Landry is more of the prototypical floor spacer and Deuce as a disrupter might be seen as better off the bench. He’s also only 6’1 despite his wingspan. I’m fine with a few of the lineups mentioned including Precious but I think starting Landry leaves us with a heckuva bench that makes a lot of sense positonally. I think rebounding is where you are leaving some to be desired.

DLeethal @ 10/4/2024 4:44 PM
Start Precious = Sims an every night player
Start Josh = playing 3 guards under 6’4 and a big off the bench.

Start Shamet or Deuce = 2 guards, a forward, and a big off the bench.

Just seems like if you slide Shamet or Deuce into starting lineup everything fits better.

I don't think you need to worry too much about Hart's shooting. He's going to be driving and dishing and then relocating to the corners where he's historically been a good shooter. Hart has already talked about the potential of KAT as a trailer off of defensive rebounds.

Thibs has also committed to a 9 man rotation, you will probably be seeing lineups of Payne, Bridges, Achiuwa + one of Bridges, Hart, OG a lot. I have no idea who the 5th man will be in thoserotations, but I haven't given up hope on Sims.

If I could critique Leon this off season, and I may not have any basis to, in a perfect world the Knicks could have signed Gary Trent Jr for the vet min, instead of the Bucks. He would have been the best piece for the bench

100% but that would all have been about when opportunity met timing.

KAT trade happens at draft time and DDV wasn’t on bench with Mikal on roster, I bet Trent signs with Knicks to start or at least Leon calls his agent a lot.
