Knicks · Knicks should employ multiple starting lineups throughout the season purposely, why not (page 1)

During the playoffs, teams sometimes adjust their lineups depending on opponent. Why not put this into place during the regular season? As part of the season long plan?

Brunson Mikal OG KAT Mitch

Brunson Deuce Mikal OG KAT

Brunson Mikal Hart OG KAT

Brunson Mikal OG Yabu KAT

Deuce, Hart, Yabu, Mitch seem like guys that fit this type of starting rotation adjustment perfectly; they don't need to start but would love to do so. Team may miss out on a little continuity but may gain a lot in terms of opponents not knowing how to attach a starting lineup they may not be sure about. These lineups would come up when injuries do, so might as well do it on purpose and get used to it?

I'm all in. The players might gripe, but I love it.

Yeah I'm trying to see who would gripe but am not really coming up with a particular player.

Well, the only guys affected are really Mitch and Hart. JB, Mikal, OG and KAT are in all the line ups. I was going to say Mikal or OG would gripe. I think they probably complainers behind closed doors.

You forgot this lineup:
JB Deuce OG KAT Mitch
which i really like

I’ll add Brogdon Brunson Bridges OG KAT.
ramtour420 @ 9/23/2025 7:31 AM
Out of those 4 the one with Deuce and the one with Yabu really stand out. We would have 5 excellent 3 point shooters on the floor. I don't think I have ever seen a Knicks team do that. Should be some high octane recipe

Unpopular opinion

I'd go Brunson, Shamet, Bridges, OG and KAT to start and try to build chemistry. Shamet not needing the ball in his hands while still being a deep threat should help with the spacing issues we struggled with for much of last season. Fine to go big with Mitch next to KAT but that could be too risky in a long season and Mitch's injury history.

If Shamet can hang with the starters we'd have a pretty amazing and more balanced bench with Deuce, Brogdon, Hart, Clarkson, Yube and Mitch (plus Deuce, Huki).

I don’t know if or see a need to try different “starting lineups. But do think all these different lineups will be seen early on during the course of a game and the most successful ones used more frequently. We must also account for the fact different teams with different strengths require different lineups. But in terms of starters, think Brown will go with who he feels are the best 5 at those spots.
VDesai @ 9/24/2025 12:23 PM
Consistency/chemsitry of lineups is important. Most coaches like to go shorter on rotations and have consistent lineups so that they build chemistry over the course of the year. Think Thibs took it too far to the extreme - he only used a handful of lineups and the ones he used most had inefficient results as far as the performance data was concerned. He could have used more variety. I hope Brown has some more flexibility. You have to assume he will as that has been the major reason that his been cited for the change.

Reading between the color lines

Based on colors the 10-man rotation would be

Brunson
Mikal
OG
KAT
Mitch

Clarkson
Deuce
Hart
Yabu
Hukporti

This is an interesting idea, especially come playoff time. Making harder for opponents to plan against our lineups. There can truly be no egos to make it work though.

The NBA has a natural way of making this happen and it's called injuries. Not concerned about who starts, I just want to see a mix of rotations used throughout the season. I don't want to see situations like the ones last year where the coach only tried something new out of desperation.

The one person who would disagree with this is no longer here. And eventhough I agree with you and screamed at Thibs for trying this, there are pros and cons. Theres a positive when you go into work, knowing your roll will be the same. Some players do well and other may not. Some are better as a starter and others are better off the bench. So it's tricky, but I agree with your playoff impacts and potential injuries that will occur.

Curious how much Brown will change. I would think any major changes isn't needed since we made it far last year. With the additional talent we have, to me that was the missing piece. I was on Thibs for his rotations, but thats due to the lack of talent we had off the bench. Thats no longer an issue moving forward.

If it all goes according to plan teams will adjust to us, not us to them.
Finding the mix and rotations will take some time with trail and error.
With that refinement and reps as well so its not going to be obvious to us that if something is not working we should change.
no doubt there will be a "We fired Thibs for this" moment!!"....... I expect it to take some time for this team to find is rhythm.
Last year we had some but by playoff time it was not apparent. Yet we still succeeded on talent.
I used the term "Looks like a knife fight" to state the obvious that things were too hard. Brown is stating they have to make things easier for JB and Kat.
Easier said than done. Thibs was no fired for failing. He was replaced to accomplish the team evolve further.

Maybe other teams need to adjust to us adjusting our lineups to our opponents in a well thought out way!

A colossal failure of epic salary proportions! This was 20 years ago. Larry got paid $28,000,000 for one season!
THat was a lot of money then! Shit, its a lot of money now!!!!
Isiah does not get enough credit for what he did. That teams salary without Browns was 40% higher than the next team which was Portland!
