Knicks · Giannis trade watch (page 9)

No I'm not doing KAT and OG. I just can't do it. Maybe value wise it makes sense, but I think that doesn't make the team better. Id only consider it in the offseason if this current group really failed. Right now gut says no.

Agreed, I think that was why an OKC NBA Cup game was important for us. It would have given us an in season assessment that could help us make a better decision. If we defeated OKC or even had a close loss then we'd know that this group has what it takes to beat them so don't do any major trades. If they blew us out/ dominated us then it might be time to pivot to a Giannis trade because perhaps we're just not good enough. That was why I was disappointed that OKC loss. A win or loss to the Spurs makes things a bit more ambiguous.

If it happens this season, than it's a matter of whether Miami wants to get aggressive. They would need to part with Ware. Wiggins and/or Herro have to be a part of the package for the salaries. Probably both and they could throw in Rozier too. Something like Giannis, Kuzma, Portis for Ware, Herro, Wiggins and Rozier works in the cap and will clear cap quicker for Milwaukee while giving them a couple of decent pieces to build on.
Question - do you fear a Miami team with Davion/Powell/Jaquez/Giannis/Bam? Bench of Kuzma, Portis, Smith, Fontecchio, Larsson. That's pretty good
Not too bad and I'd guess they'd need to throw in all the picks.
From Miami's perspective, they'd be a team in their 30's very quickly without too much youth but that's the point I guess.
Milwaukee don't get a big piece, lots of medium level talent coming back in but you are betting on Ware and Herro and picks.

Im not saying they are better, but in some ways the Spurs may even be a tougher matchup. Wemby is the most unique threat and the Spurs guard depth is strong. Its probably a less obvious defensive challenge than the Thunder. Doesn't mean its easier, but I think against the Thunder you could put Kal on Shai, OG on Jalen Williams, and stick Hart on Chet (and switch some of those guys off). I'm not sure Chet is gonna back down Hart. KAT on IHart and Brunson on Wallace.
Against the Spurs you have a problem in the sense that you want Mikal on Castle and OG on Wemby. That leaves Vassel for Hart, but Brunson has to guard Fox...
Its tough either way. The SPurs have gotten deep and talented. Their shooting is better than OKC's right now. Their defense is where they are weakest, but with Wemby in it changes the game

If i remember correctly we played @OKC very tough last year and had the lead most of the game until they came back and won. They whipped us earlier last year in MSG but we were not a very good team at that point of the season.
IDK that you can take much out of reg season matchups anyway, see BOS/NY last year. But OKC is clearly on another level, doesn't mean we wouldn't have a punchers chance though.

He's definitely a negative asset, and one that might help MIL win a few more games which they wouldn't want.
Thing is, to match contracts you'd have to add one of our other big salary wings.
joec32033 put out the play to make without the wings. Mitch($13mil, Yabusele($5.5mil), Dadiet($2.8mil), Kolek($2.2mil), Clarkson($2.3mil)
not sure that works. Even if salaries match that means we are trading 5 for 2 and would need to fill 3 roster spots. Not sure we'd have room with the 2nd apron to legally do that.
Forgot to include Towns....and it didn't include Clarkson.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Myles Turner
Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Alex Antetokounmpo
Outgoing Players
Karl-Anthony Towns
Mitchell Robinson
Guerschon Yabusele
Pacome Dadiet
Tyler Kolek
Ariel Hukporti
Pick swaps (available) to 2028, Washington pick and multiple 2nds
Possibly add Diawara and McCuller
That’s the worst trade for the knicks absolutely no to miles turner and that awful contract.
Also I’m still not convinced you trade KAT for The Freak . Other than just a strait up trade … I wouldn’t give away future assets like Kolek especially for his brothers who aren’t even real nba talent .
We loose a lot of spacing if we move on from arguably the best center in the nba . Moving him for such a flawed star in the freak is a hard no for me especially if we have to give up more then just towns who at this point in his career is a better overall talent who spaces the floor for our other stars .
One man's opinion.
Towns is FAR from the best center in the NBA. Just you saying that, let alone the whole part of your comment after "especially if we..." makes me not really care about your opinion on this trade enough to argue. You're jaded. It's fine. And I am not a Giannis fan, but in a season and a quarter Towns' inconsistency is frustrating as hell. Turner can shoot the 3 too and open the floor. Turner is a career 36/37% shooter, Towns shoots 39% career. You want someone to just space the floor Turner can do that and play better defense. Admittedly, Towns is a better player by a lot (then Turner), and I'll fully admit I have never been a big Towns fan and to me the idea of what KAT should be is better than the actual player. He has been on a tear lately and is driving more and playing defense better. I also don't expect it to last.
Thanks for the input though.

Exactly! We make this trade during the season and its back to ISO Brunson or ISO Giannis. We have a budding well balanced offense and need to ride it as far as we can go. The In-season championship game will be a good test to reveal what piece we need to make up for this season.
If the templete was the indy thing last year: "surround your stars with depth", then we are there. Its never 100% given injuries and the weird thing this Yabu situation who I take it is just not fitting in or his game fell off over the summer. Great opportunity for Diawa but he is too green still.
ITs all good now but one has to figure Mitch/Og/Kat will miss some games as season progresses and Huk is not quite there yet.
I'm trying to start with the positives and negatives of a straight 1-on-1 KAT/Giannis trade, and while Giannis is a force and a champion, he is also probably (could be?) on the precipice of a downward trend for his style of play. This is from our friends at Google:
Key Playoff Injuries:2020 (Bubble): Sprained Right Ankle
- Injured in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Miami, missing Game 5 as the Bucks were eliminated.
2021 (NBA Finals): Hyperextended Left Knee
- Suffered in Game 4 against Phoenix, causing him to miss Games 5 and 6, though he returned for the decisive Game 6 win.
2023: Back Injury
- Sidelined for multiple games in the postseason due to a back issue, affecting the team's ability to advance.
2024: Left Calf Strain
- A non-contact injury in the final regular season game against Boston forced him out for the entire first-round series against the Pacers, a major blow to the team.
That's like Julius Randle bad luck.
Giannis just turned 31. He will want a 4+ year extension at what price? $50M? $60M? With his bros tacked on too? 2-3 brothers at $2M each?
With KAT, you have time to convince him, with Brunson tagging along, to take a discount to stay. Maybe. As well, KAT style of play is just more durable.
I don't know how much KAT is central to the Knicks spread offense. Like, he makes every other corner shooter much much better cause you can't leave him open to sag or double. Same with Jalen and Mikal within the mid range. The paint is wide open for touches and then spraying the ball. Maybe you sill get that with Giannis but it's more ISO dribble drive of the Thibs era instead of wide open dive and move ball.
It's a pleasure to be able to sign Shamet and Clarkson to vet min contracts. Do you lose that cause you need to add Giannis family members?
Because the Knicks don't have picks to spare, you'd have to move Mo Diawara types? I'd be a hell no to that. He looks fun long term.
KAT doesn't look as bad defensively this year? IDK that one. Can't tell if it's the opponents, new and better schemes, or just new year and I'm too high while watching.
Anyway, I'm prob off the Giannis trade train til the summer.

Knicks 2 options.
-Don't make a trade unless favorable to the Knicks.
-Work with KAT to become the player he is capable of being.

Yes give me that all day …
But obviously that’s financially impossible.
I don’t that Giannis is our missing piece and yes he is a freak but he also doesn’t space the floor and he struggles with his shot not taking away that he’s an incredible talent. But if Giannis wants to be here it would be better if he came in the offseason.

I won't be surprised if Jemison or Diawara basically take Yabu's minutes before year end.
This would easily be the best team he's ever played on. Giannis had Jrue and Middleton in MIL and won a chip. Now imagine Brunson, Mikal, OG, & Hart next to him?

He shouldn’t. And he should be okay taking less because he’s got all the money in the world already and he’s in the location he wants to be. He has to be aware of how he will be judged in NY based on making the max vs taking a paycut. It’s the difference between Brunson and Melo in terms of how they are/ were treated here. I think the Knicks have built a culture here where we expect players to give a little back and help the greater good.

From FO perspective, this will be another reason to keep KAT over Giannis: the ability to negotiate and get to a point where their NYKnicks guy will feel comfortable enough taking on that less than max contract. Not sure if Giannis would have that chance without being a part of the organization for a while but who knows.
