Knicks · The really short off season for knicks! How to run it back? (page 31)

Knixkik @ 7/1/2026 8:20 AM
I’d like to see the Knicks grab a center, even if it’s someone really cheap, just as insurance. Someone like Kevon Looney would be very helpful whether there’s a chance Mitch comes back or not.

Diabate or bust!

But I feel they have been prepping for Mitch to be back. Go over the 2nd apron for a season. And have the deals agreed to with Towns & Hart that allow the Knicks to go back under the 2nd apron when they resign.

agreed, and we aren't even hearing of Mitch meeting with teams.

I don't even think there's a huge contract out there for him, you can't rely on him to start. He's a 15-20mpg player who ideally shouldn't play B2B's. I think 12-13m is around his value.

martin @ 7/1/2026 8:50 AM
It's weird that NONE of the Knicks, right down to the 2-way players, have been heard about meeting or getting an offer from another team?

Sochan, defensive minded Clarkson, Dillion Jones, no one?

Begley started to report the Carton theory yesterday. Seems like it’s trending towards this. Lots of Centers getting signed and no noise around Mitch.

I keep thinking if his value is say, 3/36-39m. Can we just give him $30m for 1 year, and then resign him to a team friendly deal like 2/12m following? Gives him 3/42m and helps us with the aprons.

Anyone know if something like this has ever been done and whether its considered cap circumvention?

Not much of a risk for Mitch, he gets $30m upfront.

KAT ext for 4/225m starts at 45m, and Hart can extend for something like 3/50m which would start around 13m. Two contracts like that saves about 20m in 2027.

Word has been that he can command mid level at around $15mil. So what's the dollar amount that works for the Knicks which they can have KAT sign for less that gets us under the 2nd apron which Mitch would agree too?

Not legal under the CBA. Must offer a minimum of 2 years. Also not allowed to fluctuate salaries that extreme. So wouldn't be able to do a 2 year deal where he makes $30mil year 1 and then say $8mil year 2.

We might have been able to do so during his extension window for 1 year $30mil, but not 100% sure if so.

newyorknewyork @ 7/1/2026 9:34 AM
We also can cover a lot of ground financially if Brunson opts in his final year and gets his extension after.

now what i suggested, I suggested 1 year 30m. take care of him and he understands the next year he signs a smaller deal. surprised we cant offer a 1 year deal though, i;ve never heard of such a clause. what if he was like 40...lol. we HAVE to sign him for 2 years?

0 rumors on mitch

is LAL his only option?

fitzfarm @ 7/1/2026 9:47 AM
Mitch is coming back I can just feel it … towns is gonna give a discount, and we dip below the apron next year . The Knicks have most definitely broke the nba. These other teams are over paying . And now that LeBron is doing what he’s doing everything is at a standstill.
aggo @ 7/1/2026 9:47 AM
btw, I think this would work.

the nytimes article yesterday projects the 2027-28 2nd apron at 234m. the caveat is 2026-27 will be 2nd apron and we may have to decline dadiet in 27-28 and/or trade Alvarado in 27-28. I assume Kolek is on the team no matter what due to his salary.

if you ask kat and/or hart to discount, we can get under the second apron without making any big trades.

martin @ 7/1/2026 9:50 AM
The luxury tax multiplier is strange and devastating. Best example of this is here: https://www.salaryswish.com/luxury-tax/2...

If the Knicks without Mitch are, let's say, $6M below the second apron (which is about $15M above the luxury line), then a $30M 1 year deal for Mitch would mean that the luxury would cost the team in the range of $185M with the extra $15M above the MLE price for Mitch costing you about $90m in taxes for 1 year of play just for him. It would be cheaper for Dolan to just buy a monster car garage and rotate trucks through with a diamond secretly tucked away in the dashboard for Mitch to find and give him free access to said garage.

Really rough estimate guess.

Thought I answered .

Not legal within the CBA to only offer him a 1 year deal. Knicks must offer him a 2 year deal at min. Which kills the ability to offer him 1 year $30mil.

Now if the Knicks tried to circumvent and finesse by offering a 2 year deal $30mil for year one & $8mil for year 2 etc... That also wouldn't be legal within the CBA.

Granted I got this info from Google AI which isn't always 100% accurate.

yea i doubt thats accurate, theres no rule that says teams MUST offer at least 2 years, guys sign big 1 year deals all the time. we dont need cap space b/c we have his full bird rights.

I'm not going to judge Dolan on this.

If someone came to me and said

"for an extra $100M a year you can have an excellent rebounder who is hard to keep on the court at critical times outside the 2 minute mark because a dead horse shoots free throws better than they do"

what would I do?

Probably keep looking too unless said player gave me a bargain to stay under the 2nd apron
