Towers might have to broaden scope of Peavy trade talks

November 14
San Diego Union-Tribune
"The Padres have been unable to line up a trade with one of Jake Peavy's preferred teams and next could turn elsewhere to move the ace pitcher's four-year, $63 million guarantee amid apparent financial duress.
"We've had advanced discussions with the Cubs and Braves, which are Jake's priority teams," General Manager Kevin Towers said Thursday night, "but at this point in time, I do not see a potential deal with either club."
The Yankees and Angels could be next in line, but that doesn't necessarily mean Towers' job will become easier.
At season's end, Peavy said he doesn't want to go to the American League. His agent, Barry Axelrod, said a few days later that Peavy has a "strong, strong, strong preference" to stay in the National League.
During the GM meetings last week, Towers said that Peavy, 27, might be open to going to the Yankees or Angels.
If the Yankees and Angels become viable trade partners, Towers' leverage would increase, but because Peavy's consent is needed for a trade, that leverage hinges on Peavy as well.
Making negotiations even trickier, Axelrod has said that while he and Peavy feel for Padres CEO Sandy Alderson and Towers - who met with the agent early in the process - Peavy would be disinclined to approve any trade that would overly weaken his potential new employer.
Thursday night, Axelrod gave no indication that Peavy suddenly has become excited about going to the AL but did not rule it out.
The Padres and Braves have talked since mid-October. Towers chatted often with Cubs GM Jim Hendry during the GM meetings.
The Dodgers are the only other team on Peavy's preferred list that drew attention from the Padres in the past two weeks. Towers has said he is seeking advanced young starting pitchers and middle infielders, and the Dodgers may have better depth in that area than either the Braves or the Cubs.
But Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, who has several other balls in the air, has said he believes the Padres would require him to overpay because the two are division rivals.
The two clubs did make a trade in August, however. As part of those talks, the Padres sought two young pitchers, starter James McDonald and reliever/starter Scott Elbert, who are still with the Dodgers."
i don't see a deal w/the Dodgers materializing for the Pads' ace cuz they're divisional rivals... Yanks might still be in it yet... stay tuned cacas.
This is where we need a competent GM who can get things done. I'm not saying Cashman should automatically be able to get Peavy but it would be unacceptable if we missed out on Johan, CC, and Peavy all within a 12 month period.
It doesn't help that peavy doesnt want to go to the AL or play in NY.

Insider has Ryan Dempster likely to test free agency... how would u guys feel about the Yankees pursuing him as their secondary pitching target after CC? he could add some nice depth to our rotation & he's still in his prime at 31, but he's also a big injury risk cuz of his sketchy past history healthwise... still, he had a very good season for the Cubbies last year & logged over 200 innings... overall he's a career 4.55 ERA guy w/a below .500 W-L record, so he might be another Javy Vazquez or Jeff Weaver 1 year wonder too.
personally i think i'd rather target Ollie Perez, Jon Garland or Derek Lowe for the middle of our rotation.
on another note, Andy P has stated he's only looking for a 1 year deal to return to the Yanks next season... he's an option for the bottom of our rotation.
Pettitte seeking 1-year deal
Andy Pettitte | Yankees
According to Newsday and the New York Times, Andy Pettitte said he's looking only for a one-year deal instead of a multiyear offer from the Yankees.
"One year's fine," said Pettitte. "I think I've made it perfectly clear where I'd like to play baseball at."
Pettitte, who made $16 million last season and would have to take a pay cut, has yet to hear if the Yankees would like him back in 2009.
Oh man TMS. You don't wanna touch Perez or Garland. I wouldn't mind Lowe, but I'm not thrilled with it either. Perez would be a disaster in the AL, especially in the AL East, he walks a million batters and you can get away with that in the NL, but not in the AL. Wouldn't touch him with a 10ft pole. Jon Garland is another guy that walks the ballpark, I wouldn't touch him either.
Dempster, I'd stay away from too. Look at his career as a starter, last year was by far his best year and it's not even close. Is it a trend or does he go back to what he was doing before last year? I don't know but I don't want to find out. He wasn't that good as a closer either. I'd stay away from all 3 targets and go with CC, Wang, Joba, Petitte, Mussina, Hughes as a 6th. I think it is absolutely important that we start the year with Hughes in the rotation. We HAVE to see what he can give us, give him a full season and see what happens. We need to know.

i've pretty much given up on Hughes... i'd like to trade him in a package for another player to be honest... i hope he proves me wrong but i just don't see that dawg in him that i do in Joba.

I dunno man, not everyone starts off as fast as Joba, we've barely given Hughes any time. Yes, I know he's been injured and that is alarming, but I'm just not sure we can give up on him yet because of it. We need to know what we have in him.

it's not so much the injuries (tho that does alarm me) as much as it is his fastball is straight & lacks much movement, & his velocity was nowhere near the consistent 96 mph estimates that we heard about him coming up through our farm system... i like his 12-6 curveball but to me he just doesn't seem like he can blow away hitters the way Joba does... i'm sure he can find success at the ML level but right now i don't get the feeling he'll be the dominant ace level prospect he was hyped up to be... like i said, i hope he proves me wrong.

here's some reality... the Mets suck... now take that back to the Mets forum & choke on it.
tms - dempster is garbage.
yanks gave cc a $140 mil offer.
this is going to be one of the best yankees offseasons ever. i think they will walk away with two big name free agents. if this is the rotation next season:
cc + wang + burnett + pettitte + joba
i mean...WOW...
i say pull out all the stops, offer up a huge package of prospects for Peavy so the Pads just can't say no & blow CC away w/a contract offer.

Yankees suck too right now. Battling for 3rd vs. 4th place simply sucks. Hopefully Cashman can buy us out of our suffering this off-season.

That's great. CC knows the Yankees are desperate, though, and this is just their starting offer. We still need major offensive upgrades though.

Sounds good to me. We're talking about a young CY YOUNG level pitcher here.

Yankees make offer to Sabathia, have Burnett and Lowe on radar
As expected Friday, the New York Yankees officially tendered an offer to free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia.
The offer is expected to be six years in length and have a total value of slightly more than the record $137.5 million deal that pitcher Johan Santana signed with the Mets before last season.
Santana's deal had been the largest ever for a pitcher.
Friday represented the first day that free agents can be signed. The Yankees also are expected to make offers to free-agent right-handers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
Burnett has a four-year, $54 million offer from Toronto, while Lowe is looking for a five-year contract.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story...At least Cashman isn't sleeping this off-season. I'm pleasantly surprised
maybe cash surveyed the territory and saw who would be free agents after 2008 and planned accordingly?
which big time free agents did he miss out on last winter?
We're gonna get CC even if its the last move we make this offseason. No dime will be spared.

a friend of mine txt msg'd me the other day he heard the Yanks were getting ready to offer CC a $140 mil contract... he didn't mention the years but i'm guessing it's pretty much the same contract Johan got from the Mets... haven't seen any news stories on this tho so take it w/a grain of salt.
That is exactly what they need to do. They needed to be this aggressive over the last several off-seasons but better late than never.
at this point i don't see another team matching an offer like that... if CC goes someplace else it won't be because we didn't offer him the most money... at that point it's out of Cashman's hands.
