a friend of mine txt msg'd me the other day he heard the Yanks were getting ready to offer CC a $140 mil contract... he didn't mention the years but i'm guessing it's pretty much the same contract Johan got from the Mets... haven't seen any news stories on this tho so take it w/a grain of salt.
That is exactly what they need to do. They needed to be this aggressive over the last several off-seasons but better late than never.
at this point i don't see another team matching an offer like that... if CC goes someplace else it won't be because we didn't offer him the most money... at that point it's out of Cashman's hands.
let's say for argument's sake, if the Yankees can manage to land Peavy w/the prospects they held onto last season passing up the Johan trade, & then signed CC to the dollars they would have paid Johan on an extension, would u change ur tune about how Cashman handled things Bonn? just curious.

It depends on what you mean by "change my tune." I'd give Cashman an A+ for this off-season in that scenario (if they also improved the offense). But I evaluate people over the duration of their jobs and would give Cash around a C+ as a GM in that scenario given his entire GM performance. This would be like a student of mine who gets an A on the most recent exam asking for an A in ther course even though he got Cs (roughly what I'd have given Cash) on all other exams and assignments. I'd change my tune in the sense that I'd be more optimistic about how the student would do in the future but I the students average would still be around a C+ or B-.

i think sabathia is a sure thing. the players union won't allow somebody to sign for less, he's setting the market. he'll look great in pinstripes.
i don't think peavy is coming to NY. he seems like a down south, throw in a chaw and lets go fishing type of guy, not a big city bright lights pitcher. i'm pretty sure he has a no trade cluase so if he doesnt want to play here, he isnt.
if the yanks get lowe or burnett in addition to sabathia, my goodness. it will at least give los jankees a shot to compete against the rays and, to a lesser degree, the sawx.
I think we'll end up with Burnett and Sabathia.
But I still hope we make a play for Manny.
No. I don't want that tool Manny in NY, end if story.

That's a good way of looking at it. It would at least give us a shot to compete with them.
A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com that the Yankees have had "numerous discussions" with the Padres about Jake Peavy.
Rosenthal claims that Padres GM Kevin Towers had a conversation with the Yankees' Brian Cashman at the general managers' meetings earlier this month. Towers told Cashman that he'd discuss a deal with the Yankees after working through a list of National League teams. With the Braves bowing out, it appears discussions with New York are now on.

Awesome!
Peavy + Sabbathia + either Manny or Tex would make an awesome off-season. Come on, Brian. It's really not that hard a job when you can substantially outspend all other GMs.

Mussina update!
Mike Mussina, fresh off his first 20-win season, told the New York Daily News that he will decide by next week whether to retire or pitch in 2009. His agent, Arn Tellem, reiterated those sentiments in an e-mail to ESPN.com.

i don't think u can get more country bumpkin than Andy P & he's worked out great for us... Gator wasn't exactly a big city type personality either... i think Peavy can work out great, it just depends if he wants to be here bottomline... as for his NTC, he's already included the Yankees in the list of teams he'd accept a trade to, or so it was reported.

I've been sayin' it for a couple of weeks now - don't count the Yanks outta this Peavy thing until the guy actually gets up to a podium somewhere and puts on someone else's jersey. First, we're suddenly told a couple of weeks ago (out of nowhere) that the Yankees and Angels (only AL teams that I know of) had been added to the list of teams Peavy would OK a trade to. That's because Kevin Towers loves our farm system as we've read quite a few times. Now we're hearing talks have stalled between the Braves and the Pads....
All the ingredients are there for a trade. We have the prospects Towers likes and we're in the market for top pitchers, and Peavy's certainly one of the best in the game, a stud in his prime. Adding Nick Swisher recently and hopefully a CC Sabathia or an AJ Burnett the next couple of days makes us look a hell of a lot more attractive & couldn't hurt our cause here. I still like our chances to get this guy, always have...
if we come out of this offseason w/CC signed to the money we woulda paid to Johan & Peavy in a trade using some of the prospects we woulda had to include to get Johan last year i think u'd have to consider that a preferable option than blowing our entire load on 1 guy last year... of course, nothing's been done just yet... keeping my fingers crossed that's how it plays out.
how awesome would this rotation look next season?
CC
Peavy
Wang
Joba
Pettitte

We should have had Johan. End. of. story. Replace Pettitte with Johan and I like your lineup a lot more. If you're worried about money, we could have had Manny + Johan for less than A-Rod.

who says i'm worried about money? try reading what i wrote... i said if we end up getting Peavy using the prospects we woulda had to use to get Johan & still sign CC w/the money we'd have signed Johan to then it would be a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Why is it an "alternative"? Having Peavy/CC and having Johan are no more mutually exclusive than having both a burger and a bun is. And I did not say you were in fact worried about money. I said "IF" you are worried about money.

sure it is, if u'r using the prospects to land Peavy that u would have used to get Johan to begin with & using the money u woulda had to pay Johan to sign CC, how is that not considered an alternative option? if we gave up Hughes, Kennedy & Melky in the deal to land Johan & paid him $137 mil to sign an extension, do u really think they'd be targetting guys like Peavy or CC so aggressively right now? i'm sure they'd be in the mix w/CC just like they are w/every bigname FA, but i don't see them going all out to get him w/that type of offer money wise.

Oh now I see what you're saying. So then CC could be here either way and we're simply getting Peavy as a replacement for Johan. That's not a bad replacement by any means but I'd much rather have Johan.
no, i'm not saying CC would be here either way... i'm saying if we'd have invested all it took to get Johan last year we may not be going so aggressively after CC & Peavy right now or even have the means to do so... i'm not trying to say it was the wrong move to go after Johan, remember i was in full support of us doing so last year & was even willing to trade Cano & Wang to do it... just saying if things work out where we do land Peavy & CC this offseason i think it's a fair trade off at the very least.

If we'd gotten Johan, then we still *should* have still pursued CC and if we didn't, that would just be a mistake on Cashman's part. I'm not talking about overspending on position players. This is just investing in Cy Young level pitchers in the early half of their primes. You should virtually never pass up on them.
