TMS @ 12/12/2008 3:29 PM

starting to look awesome... not too crazy about the hockey arena lookin' plexi glass in front of the mezzanine seats tho... that's gonna catch some nasty glare during day games... or are those the luxury boxes?

Yanks locking up Burnett? 5 Years 50+M?

Looks like they finally realized one reason they were such a good team in the late 90s and early 00s was... they.. HAD... PITCHING.

Holy crap that's a lot of dough.

Well, he'll make them better.
nyk4ever @ 12/12/2008 5:29 PM
Burnett will make 5 starts for the Yankees over the course of that deal
TMS @ 12/12/2008 6:18 PM
they better sign Andy or another reliable veteran arm cuz no matter how great AJB's stuff is it's no good to us if he's on the DL... i don't wanna see Hughes & Aceves being relied on to give us big innings next year.
islesfan @ 12/12/2008 6:47 PM
If Burnett stays healthy that can be a great rotation. Not thrilled with the 5th year but he's got filthy stuff when he's right. I hope he doesn't turn into the next Pavano.
TMS @ 12/12/2008 6:52 PM
talk is now there might be another pitcher going to MIL as part of the Melky for Cameron swap... it better not be anyone good.
Bonn1997 @ 12/12/2008 7:07 PM
It's not what I would have done but I'm still excited to have AJ and I'm glad Cash decided to be active this off-season.
TMS @ 12/12/2008 7:11 PM
who bats 3rd in this lineup if we don't sign another bat? Matsui? Cano? ARod?

If Cash just spent that much on Burnett and doesn't have money for a significant bat, then he is a retard
Bonn1997 @ 12/12/2008 7:14 PM
NYK, Fish: How much do you hate Cashman right now?
islesfan @ 12/12/2008 8:10 PM
Since the last championship all they've done is acquire the big bats, now they're going in the other direction. I can't argue with the philosophy.

I still think the offense is missing one big bat. They need a lot of bounce back years. At least with this pitching staff, they won't have to outslug opponents.
TMS @ 12/12/2008 8:22 PM
if they're not gonna make a run at Tex at least sign Manny to a 2 year deal at a little more than what LA offered... can't just lose Bobby A & Giambi's offense & replace that w/Nick Swisher.

From Peter Abraham's blog:

"Let’s assume Sabathia will receive $23 million in 2009 and Burnett $16.5. Figuring on conservative raises for Chien-Ming Wang (say $5 million), Xavier Nady (say $6 million) and Brian Bruney (say, $1.2 million), I have the Yankees at $172.65 million for 14 players.

If Andy Pettitte agrees to $10 million, that’s $183 million more or less with 10 players left to add. This would include Joba Chamberlain, assorted relievers and assorted bench guys. Figure on $500,000 each, or a total of $5 million.

Now we’re up to $188 million.

If they go get Mike Cameron, that’s $197.5 million unless they get Milwaukee to pay some of his salary. Even if they do, the Yankees are still well over $190 million."

Budget is getting tighter, especially if Pettitte comes back and I think they need to sign him. If they want Manny or Tex, they have to clear $10M. I would look to trade Matsui to the Giants for Randy Winn. Winn can play CF and it frees up the DH spot. It also saves $5M, which would put the payroll at $183M. They could sign a $20-25M a year player and still be under last year's payroll of $209M.

Winn

Is there a cap at 190 that I'm unaware of?

that would be solved if we passed up on Mike Cameron... i dunno how much trade value Matsui's got coming off major knee surgery, at least until he shows he's healthy again... maybe at the Allstar break u could trade him for a good player... Randy Wynn would be much more preferable to Mike Cameron tho, i'll say that much, but if the Yanks make the deal to take on Cam's salary it pretty much rules out us going after Wynn.

I meant clearing $10M even without Cameron. If they sign Cameron, you can pretty much forget signing anybody else.
