That wasn't even worth comparing.

well we gotta see how it plays out on the field... on paper it looks great, but the key is for AJB to remain healthy & for both these guys to perform in the NY market... w/o AJB, then a rotation of CC, Wang, Joba, Hughes & Aceves all of a sudden has a lot of holes in there... given the same applies to any of the other rotations but AJB's got a sketchy history of health as it is... i'm encouraged at how well he pitched against us last year & how he pitched vs. Boston tho... hoping that will carry through this coming season & he can give us at least 190 innings... we should still look to sign another arm tho... wtf is keeping Andy? u'd think the Yankees sticking by him through all the steroid talks last year he would just tell his agents to get this done already.
djsunyc @ 12/18/2008 2:38 PM
andy was terrible down the stretch for us last year.
TMS @ 12/18/2008 3:12 PM
14 wins & a 4.54 ERA from a #5 starter would be more than what anyone could expect out of a #5 starter... i'll take those numbers in a heartbeat to round out the back end of our rotation... Andy had a worse seasons before in '99 & bounced back to have a 19 win season the following year... at his age i'm not expecting the same kinda results but there's no way i think he's finished at 36.

last thing i want is us relying on 2 rooks like Hughes & Aceves just like we did last year in Hughes & Kennedy to start the season.

Jeter talks CC, A-Rod, Pedroia, more

Yankees New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter Derek Jeter apperead on XM Radio's MLB Home Plate channel today with hosts Jeff Joyce and Buck Martinez.

Here's a sample of what Jeter had to say:

On new Yankees CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett:

XM Host Buck Martinez: "What will it be like playing behind these two great pitchers you've faced so much?"

Derek Jeter: "It's going to be fun. I mean, CC [Sabathia], we've had plenty of battles with in Cleveland. He pitched against us in the playoffs a couple years ago. He had a tremendous year last year. I think the thing that sticks out with him is he's always out there. He's a horse. He throws a lot of innings. [He's a] power pitcher. And with AJ [Burnett], we saw too much of him this year, this past year. It seemed like every time we played Toronto we were facing him and (Roy) Halladay and they beat us more often than not. So it'll be fun to finally be behind him, but we added two guys, two power pitchers. Their stuff is as good as any pitcher in baseball."

On Alex Rodriguez Alex Rodriguez ' choice to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic:

Martinez: "What's your feeling about Alex Rodriguez playing for the Dominican Republic?"

Jeter: "Well, he has options. I think that's the biggest thing. Everyone doesn't have that option. I know it was tough for him the first time around making that decision and I'm sure it was tough this time around, too. I don't think he's addressed his reasons for it so we'll let him do that first but it's a good spot for him to be in."

XM Host Jeff Joyce: "Any friendly trash-talking that will go on or already has gone on now that A-Rod's going to play for the Dominican and not for you like he did in 2006?"

Jeter: "No, I haven't spoken to him about it yet so we'll see what happens. Hopefully, we'll win and we'll be able to do that."

On Red Sox second baseman and WBC teammate Dustin Pedroia:

Jeter: "He's a great player. More importantly, he's a good person. He was fun to be around [at the All-Star Game]. The thing about Dustin that I like is every game he's playing all out. I mean, he's a player that you really enjoy to watch play. I mean, I really don't enjoy it because we see enough of him but you really appreciate the way he goes about playing the game everyday. He's a spark plug for the team. He deserved to win the MVP award and he's going to have a bright future. It might be all downhill for him now. He won a championship his first year, the MVP his second year, but I'm sure he's going to have a long and successful career."

On Yankees C Jorge Posada Jorge Posada :

Martinez: "Talk about your pal, Jorge Posada. How is he progressing and what are the prospects for his 100% return to back behind the plate?"

Jeter: "He's progressing well. He's down here in Florida. He's working hard. He's starting to throw already. He's really optimistic about being ready to go when spring training starts and the regular season. I know it was a frustrating year for him last year, never really being on the disabled list or being hurt and missing basically the whole second half of the season. I know he's itching to get back out there and hopefully he won't have any setbacks."

ESPN is reporting that the Red Sox are closing in on Texeira. I think that makes it more likely that the Yankees go after Manny.

You know the Yankee hating media is going to cream themselves if the Red Sox sign Texeira. Even though they don't currently have an opening for him and will have to move their all star 1st baseman and trade their world series mvp 3rd baseman, it will be seen as a smart baseball decision regardless of the dollars or years. A signing virtually without risk and even a bargain when compared to some Yankees. Just watch.

that's exactly what i said the other day... the man-gizz will be flying all over that Baseball Tonight Studio when Ravech & Gammons get done commenting on that one.

u know what would be absolutely beautiful tho, is if the Yankees sweep the rug from under the Red Sux' feet once again & steal Mark Tex away from them just like they did when they got ARod... oh boy, how those ESPN fugtards would be killing us after that one.

Nah, I'd rather have Manny. Let's see how Texeira does when he's being paid to be the Man, especially in a town like Boston.

AJB saying all the right things... says he relishes being the #2 behind CC just like he was the #2 behind Halladay last year... just wants to win & so does CC... big part of the reason he chose NY was cuz of CC, Joba & Mariano & he wants the big stage... hope he stays healthy cuz there's no denying he's got filthy stuff.

[Edited by - TMS on 12-18-2008 10:25 AM]

I liked what he said about being behind Halladay. Although I think I'd put him behind Sabathia and Wang. Split up the hard throwers with a sinkerballer.

doesn't really matter what order since Wang throws hard too... his sinker gets up to 96 mph & AJB throws a hard sinker too.

Giardi says Pettitte is coming back!

http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/yankees/a...

And Cameron deal is dead!!

So' with that said, we will have a starting five in the rotation and with the Yankees not needing anymore pitching and Cameron deal done
I think the Yankees can' and should go snatch Tex from baston-bastards and then go get Manny NOW!

I'm very happy with the progress that has been made.
Bonn1997 @ 12/18/2008 10:45 PM
This is outstanding SO LONG AS they still have money to make major offensive upgrades. If they don't, then IMO the 82 mil on Burnett should have been spent on offense.
Bonn1997 @ 12/19/2008 8:04 AM
On ESPN radio, they kept calling AJ our #2 pitcher. I was really surprised. I'd been assuming Wang would be #2 and AJ #3. Obviously this will all sort itself out with time but just wondering--Who would you guys consider our #2 right now?
djsunyc @ 12/19/2008 12:07 PM
MLB.com - Red Sox principal owner John Henry said on Thursday night that the team is no longer going after free-agent slugger Mark Teixeira.

"We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor," Henry told the Boston media.

Numerous reports had hinted that the Red Sox were close to signing Teixeira

if the choice is 8 years of tex or 3 years of manny...then bring on manny...

Sam Borden just sent this to me. Lots of good info:

Brian Cashman gets (and deserves) a lot of credit for bringing CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to the Yankees, but Johnny Damon may have been the Yankees’ biggest recruiter this winter. Amber Sabathia said that Johnny’s wife, Michelle, played a big part in convincing her it was possible to enjoy raising a family in the New York area.

The Damons spent their first two years with the Yanks living in Manhattan, but then moved to the New Jersey suburbs, and Michelle sold Amber on the suburban life.

“She said you’re going to love it,” Amber said. “The schools are good, the pediatricians are good, the supermarkets are good – it’s like a nice little place to live.”

The Sabathias have three kids – CC Jr., age 5; Jaden, age 3; and Cyia, 2-months – but Amber and CC plan to spend some time in Manhattan, too. Amber said their favorite restaurant is Tao – an Asian spot which serves some of the greatest sushi and fragrant duck in the city – and that she is “a Saks’ girl.”

Johnny D was also one of two Yankees to call Burnett (A-Rod was the other) during the offseason, and he gave Burnett the hard sell about coming to the Bronx. Cashman said that Damon – along with Derek Jeter and others – also bent his ear during the season about getting Burnett since he always gave the Yankees such a hard time whenever he pitched against them.
—————————
The first serious conversation about the Yankees getting CC Sabathia didn’t happen this winter. It happened last offseason, when the Yanks were considering whether to trade for and then give an extension to Johan Santana. Knowing that Sabathia was going to be available, the Yanks decided not to give up prospects and money for Santana, and instead “take a gamble,” in Cashman’s words, on getting Sabathia for only money in free agency.

As it turned out, that long-term plan played a big part in Sabathia ultimately accepting the Yankees’ offer. At the final meeting Cashman and Sabathia had at Sabathia’s California home, Cashman laid out exactly how long Sabathia had been on the Yankees’ radar. He told Sabathia and his agents how the Yankees had been targeting him for over a year and explained the entire process behind their decision, in hopes it would show how committed the Yankees were to Sabathia.

“Ten minutes after he left, I called him to tell him I’m in,” Sabathia said. “That really meant a lot to me.”
————————
Here’s the info on two things about Carsten Charles Sabthia that seem to get an excessive amount of attention: His weight and his initials.

First, Sabathia doesn’t seem bothered or embarrassed about being a big dude. When a reporter asked if anyone had ever tried to get him to lose weight on a previous team or if he felt he would want to do that, he smiled and said, “I work hard every day. I work out every day. In December and January, I do two-a-days.” Then he paused and said, “I look like this. I don’t think my physique is going to change.”

Joe Girardi vouched for Sabathia’s work ethic, saying he recalled a game earlier this year when the Yankees beat Sabathia, 1-0, in Cleveland on a Friday night. “I got the weight room Saturday morning at 9 a.m.,” Girardi said, “and he was already there.”

As for Sabathia’s initials, there was much debate over whether it should be “CC” or “C.C.” When he was asked about it yesterday, Sabathia spread his arms out wide and said, “Y’all do it however you want,” before laughing over what an issue it had become. “I don’t really care at all,” he said. And what does he write when he signs his name? “Carsten, if I have to write it,” he said. So there you go.
———————
Don’t look for either CC Sabathia or A.J. Burnett to participate in the World Baseball Classic this spring. Sabathia said he’s been approached and, while he hasn’t made an official decision, it seemed like he’s leaning towards sitting it out. “I want to get acclimated and be around my new teammates,” he said. Burnett said, “I have not been contacted but I’d say ‘no.’ … It’s a cool idea but it’s not for me.”

Both pitchers have some previous relationships with other Yankees. Burnett heard from A-Rod and Johnny Damon this winter and knows a number of other Yanks from playing against them with the Blue Jays, while Sabathia became friendly with Jorge Posada when both were on an offseason cruise run by Nike. Sabathia is also tight with Joba Chamberlain, who he says he saw out running in Cleveland during a series there, “and we stopped and talked for like 30 minutes.” The two exchanged numbers and have been close ever since. They even went out to eat together last week.

Burnett was also close with former Yankee (and forever American Idle) Carl Pavano. Burnett said he talked to Pavano before the last series the Blue Jays played at Yankee Stadium while the Idle was long-tossing along the third-base line. So did Pavano offer any worldly advice about how to be a true Yankee?

“I only listen to SOME things Carl says,” Burnett said as the room erupted with laughter. “Only some things.”
———————
The Yankees announced two big signings yesterday but there continues to be a lot of buzz about two other potential deals: One for Andy Pettitte and one for Manny Ramirez.

There wasn’t a whole lot of news on either of those fronts yesterday, with Brian Cashman saying, “Andy is a free agent. I know he’d like to be here and I know we’d like for him to be here.” Cashman did say that his visit to Houston wasn’t a “take-it-or-leave-it” trip to see Pettitte, but it seems clear the Yankees are prepared to move on from this situation either way. If Pettitte wants to stay, he’ll take the $10 million the Yanks are offering. If he doesn’t like that, the Yankees will go elsewhere and be just fine doing so.

As for Manny Being Manny, no one at the Stadium was taking the bait yesterday. Hal Steinbrenner was asked how realistic it was that Manny might end up in the Bronx, and he said, “As realistic as all of the other free agents because we’re looking at all of them.”

Steinbrenner and Cashman did both say that the Yankees don’t have an unlimited payroll, so that’s another factor to consider when dreaming about Manny (or Mark Teixeira). There also wasn’t much discussion about the Mike Cameron-for-Melky deal, which seems to be dead (though Sabathia did put in a plug for Cameron, who was his buddy in Milwaukee).
——————
Great stuff by Sam and thanks to him.

I’ve told Sam what I’m telling you now: He has an open invite to post here about the Yankees any time he wants. As a former beat writer, Sam has great insight into the team and his input is welcome. In addition to what he brings to the table journalistically, he is a good friend and we’ve collaborated on some projects. So look for more from Sam here in the future.

It says 'he wants to be hear'. Good enough for me. He'll be back. Pretty stupid not' to be a part of this. I think a Tex and/or Manny deal will do it.
