good performance by hughes. the key with him is location.
how about the stat splits with molina vs. posada catching.
5-3 with a 2.8 era with molina
5-7 with a 7+ era with posada
i've noticed that Andy pitches well w/Jorge calling the games, but for the most part it seems like Molina calls a better game overall ever since he's been here just from what i've seen... plus his defense behind the plate can't be understated... that snap throw to 1B is deadly... Jorge's still a great Catcher but age & injuries are catching up to him... the way he was jogging to 1B the other nite was blatant evidence of this.

Can we calm down a little about Phil Hughes now? This guys just needed to get healthy. And oh....he's 22.
TMS @ 4/29/2009 1:12 AM
yo, we've seen him pitch well before... just wanna see some consistency outta him.

PS: Anyone embarrassed to be a Yankee fan needs to get a clue. They pay a lot of money to compete every year. Maybe they don't do the right things at times, and God knows I don't agree with a lot of their decisions, but what they do are not worthy of embarrassment. If they want to spend the money, and feel that's the best route for them to go, then do it.
Hopefully it will grow some fruits finally.

I just want you to understand that I am embarrassed by their laziness as an organization. They are getting outworked and other organizations are running circles around them in the brain trust dept.
The Yankees are relying far too heavily on their payroll advantage. Their on the field and off the field philosophy seems to be just to wait for the three run homer. They dont have any interest in putting together a balanced team, it seems --- their work begins and ends with signing the next big free agent. Its getting nauseating.
It's just not something to be embarrassed about, in my personal opinion. It's not the RIGHT way, but it's not something to cause embarrassment. It's freaking sports. lolI was more playing around and introducing an alternative view than actually accusing you of being a bandwagoner. But would you be embarrassed or ashamed if you found out your son hit another kid on the playground? That's basically how I feel. I take so much pride in the history of the Yankees and pride in the achievements and character of a few members of the roster but am left with nothing but embarrassment by execs running the team and recent year performances of the team.
A bandwagoner? You got your facts wrong kiddo. I've been a fan since about 92 when Toronto was dominating the AL the the Yankees still sucked. I was in 4th grade, I believe. Actually, I was on the fence between the Mets and Yankees in 3rd grade. Then I became a big fan of a player by the name of Pat Kelly and that drew me to the Yanks. After that, I grew to love Mattingly and Boggs and a young Bernie and Melido Perez and Mike Gaellgo and Valardie and Spike Owen. That was when we sucked!!! But I stuck with them and I stick with them now, just as I am sticking with the Knicks now and just as I stook with the Giants.
I take as much satisfaction in the Yanks winning as you can imagine and would kill for the Yanks to win the World Series this year. And like I said, everything isn't peaches in cream. But I'll never be embarrassed to be a fan of the team. Sorry, wont do it.

I don't get embarrassed by kids, so the truth is, no I wouldn't be embarrassed. Kids get in fights. Try another analogy that really has nothing to do with this.
Kids scream, kick, hit and fight enough for me to realize that sometimes, it's bound to happen and they are just going to have to learn.

from Insider:
The knives are out for Gardner
Brett Gardner | Yankees
A source with knowledge of the Yankees' thinking tells 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand that Austin Jackson could be the Yankees' starting center fielder at some point this summer. Jackson is dominating at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre right now, hitting .354 with a .429 OBP.
Meanwhile Brett Gardner is hitting just .220, although backup Melky Cabrera is off to a fast start with a .303 average and four homers. If the Yankees continue to struggle, then Jackson could be brought in to shake things up. Imagine the John Sterling home run call: "Austin powers one to deep left field!"

a damon/matsui/posada DH platoon is best. matsui can't field, and posada and damon each pose their own defensive inadequacies. damon honestly stumbles around like he's drunk, and i think i can throw farther than him. posada its probably best for his career to DH and he's still an above average switch hitter esp. if rested more/not catching.
molina is a great team player. he should catch 3 of the 5 in the rotation.

Posted by TMS:Posted by Bonn1997:Posted by djsunyc:Yes, you have actually. Although some thought we had the best bullpen in baseball, we needed bullpen help and a deeper bench. I was neutral about the bullpen last off-season and clear about the bench. I suggested Ken Griffey Jr. as a player to look at and many gave some other names. That said, Cashman has been GM for a lot longer than the past few months. Why are you trying to restrict the discussion to the past off-season anyway?
i still haven't heard any suggestions for this past offseason instead of signing "mercernaries" in cc, aj, and tex...
Jr's. batting .196 w/a .660 OPS... i suggested him too but bringing him up as some example of a better option in hindsight doesn't do much for your case against Cashman.
I'm mentioning his name now only to refresh people's minds of the conversation. The point was only that we amateurs spotted a problem Cashman was blind to. We both brought him up and then both agreed there were better options.

That was truly a wonderful game to watch. Hughes was great and the offense was really exciting in the 7th inning.

i felt at the time that re-signing posada for 4 years was a mistake.
damon is one of the worst fielding outfielders in the game. i've counted at least 7 plays this season where he's cost us at least a run out there.

btw, hughes location will dictate his start. he doesn't have lights out stuff but he varies speeds just enough that by hitting different parts of the plate, it will keep hitters off balance and you will see alot of weak pop ups and grounders. if he can perfect the curve, that will be his strikeout pitch as it makes guys knees buckle.
he reminds me of a very young and raw version of halladay.

What's funny is that Halladay also was bounced the minors after he made several starts in the majors and they completely redid his motion. Now Hughes didn't have as much of a redo, but it is a little similar.

what i came away with yesterday is a physically bigger hughes showing poise on the mound. he fought some control issues on his curve and he still managed to get guys out, looking off balance on a bunch of outs. his location on the fastball was pretty impressive and he wasn't scared to go inside at all. he looked very mature out there. ump didn't give him at least 3 strikes and it didn't rattle him.

As did Melky. They are both shutting down the doubters. Jeter is playing very well too. Now we have to get the rest of the team on track.
Nice show of small ball yesterday, besides that Molina Home Run.
VDesai @ 4/29/2009 11:22 AM
Cano is one of the streakiest players I've seen. When he gets on a hot streak he really gets on one....basically gets 2-3 hits every game.
Bonn1997 @ 4/29/2009 11:41 AM
Posted by VDesai:He is. He can be one of the most frustrating players in the game for very long stretches but can also be one of the best in the league for long stretches. I really hope he becomes more consistent as he ages. He can't just alternate .700 and 1.000 OPS seasons.

Posted by Allanfan20:Melky definitely had doubters, including me. I want to see more than 40 ABs but I'm thrilled with how he's playing right now. I don't think Cano had any doubters. I said I expected him to return to his career #s, although it's great that he's above them now. The offense is clearly not the problem with this team.Posted by djsunyc:

I'd get mad at him, and I would discipline him, depending on the situation he got in. However, to me, to be embarrassed by your kids, to me, is boarderline abusive.

cano's not just on a streak:
In three plate appearances against Edwin Jackson last night, Robinson Cano saw 27 pitches. He saw 12 pitches in the fourth inning and 10 more in the sixth. That played a huge role in driving up the right-hander’s pitch count. Jackson had to leave a shutout after six innings because he had thrown 117 pitches.
Cano is averaging 3.64 pitches per plate appearance. That’s not great, but it’s a jump up from 3.35 a year ago. Cano has walked eight times in 91 plate appearances. It took him 122 PAs to get eight walks last season.
