We didn't get any for Abreu- and the risk of offering arbitration to an older player is they just might take it, and that could end up being costly. Abreu would've made quite a bit more through arbitration than the contract he actually recieved. I think Matsui would definitely accept it.
Nady, because he's coming off an injury, would probably take arbitration as well and stem off FA for one more year. Either way, if he did walk, because he would've missed half the year he probably would've been a Class C FA.
At any rate, the Yanks should open up a spot for Austin Jackson next year as he will be ready.
we score runs late in games - i'm LOVING that. it's a good trait to have for a team.
Yanks break it open 10-3 and Mo should definitely not pitch the 9th
2 out rallies give me wood.
The O's shortstop is just horrible.

bring in swisher...
Mo was in line for the save cuz he came in w/a 2 run lead so that's why he finished out the game.
Don't get why they would make Mo pitch though simply b/c of the save. The Yanks had the big time lead. Just put someone else in and save Mo.

Let Nady walk. Let Matsui walk. Maybe see if you can get Damon back for another year. Do not let Cervelli just walk. That's bad beeswacks.
i would trade Nady this year for prospects if i can... i'd probably wanna hold onto Matsui just in case, we can always use his bat even if he's not hitting nearly like he used to hit... we've all seen how streaky he can get... Nady's contract is more easily tradeable & he can still play a little defense, albeit not all that great... Melky & Gardy have been doing a fine job filling in whenever needed, & Damon should be relegated to DH duty next season... i'd probably let Matsui walk then & get whatever compensatory draft picks i can get from the team that signs him.
Matsui is a free agent. How is it possible to get compensatory draft picks if he walks??
because that's how u get compensatory picks... your free agents sign w/other teams & those teams give back compensatory picks... that's how we got Joba & Hughes, when Tom Gordon & Andy Pettitte walked via free agency to the Phillies & Astros respectively.
So did we get anything back when Giambi and Abraeu walked and did we have to give up anything for CC, Tex and AJ? When does that apply?
i forgot to include that we need to offer Matsui arbitration & he needs to turn it down in order to qualify for compensatory picks... so say he wants to sign someplace else for a longterm deal & refuses arbitration, then whoever signs him owes us compensatory picks depending on where Matsui ranks on the list of DH's in MLB... if he's a type A free agent, meaning he ranks in the top 20% of players in his position, then we get 2 compensatory picks including the very first pick the signing team owns along w/a sandwich pick in between the 1st & 2nd rounds of the draft, unless that 1st pick is a top 15 pick, in which case we would get that team's 2nd round pick instead.
there's a stipulation that provided for the Yankees to sign CC & Teix, who were both Class A free agents, but they only lose the 2 compensatory picks w/the higher ranking player's team getting the 1st pick... so basically the Angels get our 1st round pick next year & the Brewers get the sandwich pick, which pretty much screwed the Brewers cuz had we not signed Teix they would have gotten both our picks.
i believe we didn't get any compensatory picks for Abreu because we didn't offer him arbitration... same goes for Giambi... i believe we did offer Mussina arbitration tho, so had he decided not to retire & signed w/another team, we would have been rewarded 2 compensatory picks from the team that signed him... hope that wasn't too confusing.

No, you said it well. Thanks for explaining. I really didn't know that you get picks like that. Is it like this in football and hockey as well?

Meaningless stat...he got the important out of the game, but probably a waste to have him out there...luckily only 14 pitches despite giving up that homer.
I don't know about hockey, but there are compensatory picks in the NFL draft. However they are "sandwich" picks awarded strictly by the NFL and not taken from the signing team. In addition, the highest they can be is round 3, and the formula for obtaining them has zero clarity to it.
The MLB system is fascinating because they will actually take away team's first rounders- but in the MLB draft you also cannot trade picks.

not meaningless to Mo i'm sure... as a MGR if you're gonna bring Mo in during the 8th u gotta be willing to go w/him the rest of the way... & i'm sure he wanted to reward Mo w/the easy save after he did his job in the 8th.

Mo's got 489 of em and has already made a ton of cash- I'm sure he's just concerened about winning the ballgame these days.

well, he's got 490 now... Trevor Hoffman's got 564... & while we all know Mo's a 1st ballot shoe in HOFer, i'm sure he wouldn't mind going after the alltime saves record someday... if Hoffman is still going strong at 41 i have to believe Mo will still wanna pitch into his 40's too... 2 years of saves can add up to about 60-70 saves, it could be really close when both of those guys are retired.
I don't think Mo's gonna catch Hoffman b/c I doubt Hoffman would have to retire at least 2-3 seasons earlier than him. At the age their both at now it seems unlikely. History will remember Mo more kindly anyway.
Anyone wanna place odds on Joba drilling Huff tommorow?
Mo's 2 years younger than Hoff so it's not out of the question...
Huff better see some chin music, especially after Teix got drilled in the back by Guthrie today... Teix didn't seem all that happy about it either... ARod got clipped in the elbow earlier in the game too... u drill our 1B, we're drilling yours... Joba just has extra motivation now... hopefully we have a nice lead in the late innings so he can do it.

Yeah, it's a confusing system but we did lose picks for CC, Tex, and Abreu but did not get anything for Giambi or Abreu. It was a controversial decision but Cashman didn't want to risk that Abreu or Giambi would ask the arbitration offer.

I think Matsui needs his monthly knee draining. The Yankees need to put Cano after A-Rod in the lineup...starting immediately.

This is just a few weeks after Bruney said he thinks the 8 1/2 minute delay to review an HR was responsible for his injury. I don't get how you can justify using Mariano after almost a 30 minute break just to pad a stat that's irrelevant to the team's goal of winning a world series. I'm sure Mariano would rather be healthy the rest of the year than get one extra save and then have a DL stint.

I hope so, even though I have no problem with what Huff did.
