Did you see how he looked in the 5th after the long delay? With a pitcher his age and his history of elbow problems, I was concerned about him even having to pitch the 5th inning, although I would have given him the chance to get a W. One extra inning out of the bullpen wouldn't have mattered--we had to do that anyway obviously. The Yankees top of the 5th wasn't just a long inning--it was like two long innings, as Boston threw about 55 pitches.

Yanks playing some sloppy-ass ball right now. Let's get some outs and get outta here with the W. Bruney continues to annoy. Just throw strikes man...WTF?
Marte in the game now. Been a long time. Nice. Just got 2 outs. Who'd they send down to make room for him?
Just to touch on the Jim Rice comments Kay & Singleton were talking about before where apparently Rice mentioned recently that guys like A-Rod, Manny and Jeter couldn't even play with guys from his era... Huh?? STFU you idiot. Don't talk about players you have no idea about. It's obvious Rice knows nothing at all about Derek Jeter, the player or the person. Not only is Jeter a great player but as far as athletes being role models, I can't think of a better candidate in any sport out there right now than Derek Jeter. And what players from your era can't Jeter play with there, Jim? Marty Barrett? Spike Owen? Get the F outta here with that crap. Those fools couldn't even hold a candle to Jeter.. Rediculous comments. I mean Jesus, be objective. We all know you were a great Red Sox and probably still have a hatred for the Bombers, but come on man, trashing Derek Jeter like that??? Really Jim?? Nobody hates the Red Sox more than me, but I'll be the first one to tell ya Pedroia's a heck of a player, Terry Francona's a class act, etc.. Jim Rice can go F himself after those comments. Nobody cares what this moron has to say anyway...

19 runs on 22 hits right now. I love it. Gimmie 30 runs! You could hear a pin drop in that stadium right now. I love it!
20-8. Man is Mitre garbage or what? Just read that Ramiro Pena was the one who was sent down to make room for Marte. Really guys? You couldn't have sent Mitre down instead? What's the point in keeping Mitre around now that we have Gaudin?? Gaudin's pitching well too... I don't get it. I guess they feel like they have enough depth in the infield now with Hairston.. Meanwhile, Mitre can't even close this one out up 12.
Mitre = absolute GARBAGE!

Sorry dude. When it was 10-1, I figured I'd turn the game off and make plans with a friend to see a movie. I didn't realize our pitching would start to get ugly like that. I missed Pettitte getting smacked around.
Andy didn't really get smacked around but he did pitch a sloppy game... good thing for him the offense smacked the Red Sux around for him first... Mitre & Bruney were horrific in relief, i almost thought they were about to give away the game for a second there, that's how bad they looked.

Pretty much... Rice can go much on a turd sandwich... there's very few players in this era I believe weren't juicing and Jeter happens to be one fo the few. If anything his play would have been better in other eras

Mo Rivera is another.
2-1 at Fenway, i'll take it. I really want to see the Sox get the Wildcard and play the Yankees in the ALCS so Red Sox Nation can get their hearts broken.
They really got arrogant after those 2 championships and deserve a little NYY playoff smack down to remind them who their daddy is.

Perhaps that's ideal but I'll be rooting for Texas... I cannot bring myself to cheer for the enemy
15-7. I'd really like to see CC have a 20 win season. Burnett's pitched well enough to have more than 10 wins.

I've been sayin' it for a while now - call me crazy but I want the Angels and the Red Sox in the playoffs this year. You can't convince me that either team is better than we are (the standings pretty much prove it), and I want a chance to prove it head to head this post season. Not trying to get too ahead of myself here or look past anything else but I tell ya, I'd love nothing better than to take both of those teams out on our way to the World Series. I really want to put an end to this whole "we can't beat the Angels" nonsense already..

don't get me wrong, whoever the Yanks play is who they play... but I just want a chip. Considering the team has had very little trouble outside of the Angels and the Red Sox I'd prefer to play other teams and avoid the 2003 scenario where teh Yanks beat the Sox and then loses The Series because the ALCS was so demanding.
And I really would prefer not to play the Angels. That team has always had pitching and now they have hitting... go look at the regular's batting averages. Their lineup looks extremely October friendly.
angels force the issue. they keep you on your toes and that has burned us in the past.
sox still have lester + beckett for 4 games in a 7 game series. if they are on their game, that could counter cc + aj.
both teams are scary come postseason...
but if boston wins the wildcard, then they play each other in the ALDS...

I am with you - I just want a chip especially after the last few post seasons. But it would be sweat to put some demons to rest. Either way I will be happy as long as the Yankees win. I think this team has the right chemistry to do it.
God I'm so sick with that ending I wanna puke. Can't blame Girardi at all - asking Swish to bunt is 100% the right play. It's not like they would've taken the bat outta the 9 hole hitter's hands and even if they did to set up the double play, I'll take Jeter against Francisco bases loaded/1 out any day of the week.
I tell ya what though, I just knew Swish wasn't gonna get that bunt down. The argument's totally on Girardi's side here so he has nothing to worry about (man he was pissed too, you catch that little walk he did in the dugout?)-- he'll be the first one to say that every player in that lineup has to be able to get a bunt down at any time, they all work on it in spring training, blah, blah, blah.. Joe's got class though, he'll say it in a way w/o throwing Swish under the bus. Swisher's a stand-up dude, I'm sure he'll agree. He'll be the first one ripping himself tomorrow morning in the papers, watch. He knows he's gotta get that bunt down - he even hits 2nd sometimes...
Bottom line for me though is I've seen enough failed attempts now by players who don't bunt regularly to know it's much easier said than done and not a good play even though every piece of info. out there will tell you otherwise. I would've let him swing away there. Power pitcher that doesn't really throw ground balls against a guy with a big uppercut lefthanded swing. I love Swisher but I tell ya my gut was telling me he was in over his head there. Getting a bunt down sounds simple enough but for a player that doesn't do it on a regular basis or even semi-regular basis, there may not be anything harder to do successfully in the entire game. Even Damon didn't get a big bunt down recently and looked awkward in the process. Anyone remember that? What was that, a few weeks ago right? Unless you got a guy up there that knows what to do there, you're almost better off letting these guys hit. Man, this was a tough one. I feel really bad for Swish. I don't think I would've put him in that situation even though it was technically the right move. Anyone feel me?

I gotta say I disagree with you Fine. Yes, you're right, that is normally a text-book bunting situation, but to me Girardi doesn't have the best feel for the game. With the way the Yankees were stringing together hits, I wouldn't have given up an out, just to move the runners along - as it was, there was already a runner in scoring position and Swisher doesn't hit into THAT many double-plays. I think asking Swish to bunt was the wrong play, if he was going to swing he was most likely going to hit it hard somewhere which would NOT have taken the air out of the balloon like that failed bunt did.
Girardi to me just doesnt have the best feel for the game. I think he's a pretty good manager, but sometimes I really wonder about his feel for the game.
This might sound crazy but stay with me here. I was watching this game on and off so I don't know who we had available on the bench at the time that can really get a bunt down there (Hairston was on the bases, Ramiro Pena isn't with the club right now and Gardner's still hurt), but if I were Girardi and I made up my mind that I absolutely had to have a bunt down there, I may have called Swisher back and asked Sabathia to come in there and get that damn bunt down. Think about it - Swisher never bunts, Sabathia on the other hand was a superb hitting pitcher while in the NL that's been asked to bunt countless times before. Crazy scenario I know but I betcha CC has more of a chance to get that bunt down. Even if it went to 2 strikes, CC can still handle the bat. He's not some stiff up there. I don't know -- too crazy or what? I guess it is - if CC ever got hurt there, there goes the season. It would've taken a lot of balls, that's for sure. Just having a little fun after a tough loss...

Nah, I'm with you bro. I would've had him hit there. I was just pointing out that it was the right move for Joe and for all intent & purposes, he's off the hook. But I agree with you, like you basically said, it didn't feel right. Sometimes you gotta throw that textbook out the window and go with your gut. My gut was telling me right from jumpstreet that that wasn't the right move..
