I gotta say I disagree with you Fine. Yes, you're right, that is normally a text-book bunting situation, but to me Girardi doesn't have the best feel for the game. With the way the Yankees were stringing together hits, I wouldn't have given up an out, just to move the runners along - as it was, there was already a runner in scoring position and Swisher doesn't hit into THAT many double-plays. I think asking Swish to bunt was the wrong play, if he was going to swing he was most likely going to hit it hard somewhere which would NOT have taken the air out of the balloon like that failed bunt did.

Girardi to me just doesnt have the best feel for the game. I think he's a pretty good manager, but sometimes I really wonder about his feel for the game.

Nah, I'm with you bro. I would've had him hit there. I was just pointing out that it was the right move for Joe and for all intent & purposes, he's off the hook. But I agree with you, like you basically said, it didn't feel right. Sometimes you gotta throw that textbook out the window and go with your gut. My gut was telling me right from jumpstreet that that wasn't the right move..

disappointing ending to a very exciting comeback in the 9th.

you're a major league baseball player and you can't bunt? it's on swisher. calling for a bunt was baseball 101.

hairston fubared by not waiting for the ball to get through. melky is in a major slump right now - we need gardner back or more hairston.
TMS @ 8/26/2009 12:32 PM
agreed, calling a bunt to stay outta the DP was the right move... then TEX likely walks Melky to load up the bases w/1 out & set up the DP in that instance which then puts the pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes to our best hitter, Jeter with nowhere to put him... that was on Swisher for not being able to do his job, & Hairston messed up on the bases getting too far off on Melky's liner up the middle... when ur put in a game to be a pinch runner u can't make mistakes like that to cost the team a game.

btw, i hear Johan's having season ending surgery to remove bone chips in his throwing elbow & he also needs knee surgery to repair a torn miniscus... looks like the Mets may have gotten 1 & a half good years outta him before he started to break down.

Melky's #s are simply returning to his career level. Slump makes it sound like this was unusual and likely won't last but if you look at his 4 year career the only part of the season that was unusual was the hot start.

I disagree that the bunt was the right move to make... Swisher is from the system that demphasized steals and bunting. You have a player play to his strengths... if you want a bunt PH. Maybe Shaq should be able to hit his free throws but he can't

Swisher also strikes out a ton and has GIDP more times than i care to remember this year. So u wanna risk that with 0 outs and not get the man to 3b with a sac bunt there? not a good idea imo. yeah if Gardner had been on the bench im sure Girardi woulda called on him in that situation to lay down a bunt but Swisher should be able to get that done there when called upon.

Yeah, well Swish did take all the responsibility just reading the paper this morning like I knew he would. Stand-up dude. It was the right play by the book but under the circumstances I probably would've had him swing away there. But that's me. I've see enough of guys that don't bunt on a regular basis now to know that it's just asking too much. If it were me, I either PH someone there that I KNOW can get a bunt down or if I don't have that option for whatever reason and I don't feel 100% confident that the guy at the plate can do the job, I let the guy hit. Girardi said he had confidence that Swish was gonna get that bunt down, that he's done it many times before. Interesting. I've watched pretty much all these games and I can't say I recall Swisher bunting in a big spot like that. Ahh, under the bridge now..

Nice win tonight though. Looks like we'll be getting Gardy back soon here so that'll be good. It'll give Melky a break and a little time to recover from his slump and it'll give us the blinding speed element that we can use at any moment, even if he's not in the starting lineup. That's a huge dimension to have at your disposal. Plus he can bunt... Question - who gets sent down to make room for Gardner? I guess it'd be Mitre right?

I want this game this afternoon. AJ against Dustin Nippert. Curious to get a good look this guy Nippert - this was the guy we wanted from Arizona in the Randy Johnson deal before we wound up settling for Ross Ohlendorf in that package instead.

I spent more time watching the Staten Island little league game last night... those kids had quite the run. that said i did see Jorge's blast and up until 4-1, then again after the LL game finished. I really hope Texas makes the Wild Card because Texas is the most beatable of the playoff contenders

Brad Penny was released by the Bosux. Another brilliant offseason acquisition by Boy Genius Epstein.

Yankees create snag for Red Sox

Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein are quite cordial, actually, even meeting to talk baseball during the Hot Stove league at public appearances over the years. But that didn't stop a little front office gamesmanship from reportedly taking place this week.

According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, the Yankees put in a claim on Triple-A outfielder-first baseman Chris Carter, who had been placed on waivers by the Red Sox with the intention of trading him to the Mets in the Billy Wagner trade.

With the Yankees' claim, the Red Sox had to pull Carter off waivers and now must carry them on their 40-man roster for the rest of the season. The Wagner deal obviously was completed regardless, but it is always interesting to read about some of these behind-the-scenes machinations.

i'm tired of this guy always goin after my girls...

pretty dreary day to be out at the stadium but nothing dreary about Mitre's performance today... 1 hitter through 6 & a third & only got taken out after being hit with a liner back up the middle... guy was on his game today... gotta love it when our #5 pitcher throws a gem like that.

Gaudin pitched perfect relief to close out the last few innings... Yanks played stellar defense all day & the bats were alive all game long, topped off by ARod's HR to cap off the 10-0 slaughter of the Chisox.

me & my nephew got on the Stadium Jumbotron between innings... pretty cool!... had a great time despite the weather.

I did too so maybe I'm off here... but I think they just kept him to an absurdly low pitch count
Allanfan20 @ 8/31/2009 9:04 AM
What, like 50 pitches or something?
SupremeCommander @ 8/31/2009 9:15 AM
I read he threw 35... I guess now they're trying to to have him pitch regularly and limit the innings, which IMO is going to blow up in the team's face when he's asked to go 7 in October

they are pitching him light now and then building him back up his last 2-3 starts so he can go 7 in october...

that seems like an invitation for disaster--especially in Yankee stadium. He pitches there like he's still in the pen going for cheers. He's always going for the strikeout. Besides the endurance issues, I think that's going to reinforce his mentality of always going for the strikeout
