I'm not sure how one likes Marte. He sucks balls. I'd rather have Gaudin as the lefty specialist besides Coke.
VDesai @ 10/13/2009 1:58 PM
As long as Molina has to catch Burnett you need Cervelli, b/c Jorge is gonna enter those games in the 6th-7th and you need another catcher in case of emergency.

I think you toss Marte for Bruney. Neither can throw strikes that consistently, but Bruney is the kind of guy that can come in and get a K if you really need one.

do we take 3 catchers? with a 7 game series, an extra pitcher may be needed. i like marte but girardi can't trust him. so if you can't trust him, then you can't pitch him.

i would definitely take 3 catchers into this series... gives Girardi more flexibility to make moves... i'd also think hard about carrying an extra pinch runner (Guzman) into this series in place of carrying the extra pitcher (Marte) so he can play more small ball also... i think between Aceves, Coke, Gaudin, Robertson, Joba, Hughes & Mo we got a deep enough bullpen & i don't wanna see Marte coming into any games regardless of the situation.

i'm surprised nobody is making mention of fuentes in place of k-rod. someone said it all comes down to girardi v. sciosia but i think the yankees have a clear edge in the bullpen and a slight edge offensively. lackey/weaver/kazmir should not be as strong as cc/burnett/pettitte. yanks also have homefield. yankees in 6.

imho, i think the talent works itself out.

but what can be controlled is when there's a hit and run, a steal, which pitchers you bring in, which pinch hitters you put in, etc...that comes down to managing.

you could make a good argument that girardi totally mismanaged his bullpen in game 2 by only leaving gaudin in the pen if tex doesn't hit the homer. followed that up by pulling pettitte in a game where he was dominating and only 81 pitches in the 7th (taking away joba if the game went extra innings).

twins stink but the angels don't...so something like that could cost us a game or two.

you have no idea who will pitch well or who will hit well - that's on the players and is somewhat random as postseason is unpredictable...so i look at it more from a strategic standpoint...

So everyone's cool with CC making 3 starts in this series, one of those coming on short rest? It's really the only big decision Joe has to make right now -- CC for 3 starts or incorporate a 4th starter... You do that now you almost gotta stick with that for the World Series, God willing we get there. In case we have to go with a 4th starter, do ya go with Gaudin (the Yanks are something like 6-0 or 7-0 in the games he's started for us) and leave Joba where he is? I think so. Gaudin actually had a decent start out in Anaheim the last time we were out there when we took 2 out of 3. In that series if I remember right, we lost the opener with Pettitte but came back and won games started by Gaudin & AJ. Pettitte wasn't even terrible that game but he looks much sharper & stronger now - I think that game out in Anaheim was Andy's first game back after being shut down for a turn or two.

Everything else I agree with you guys -

- I'd take Bruney this series and leave Marte off the roster. Abreu's the only true left-handed hitter they have and we have Coke for him late in games. Everyone else is either a righty or a SH including two big righties back to back, Hunter/Guerrero, if that's how Scioscia plays it. One lefty specialist should be enough I'm thinking. Hopefully we can neutralize Abreu for most of the game anyway in the ones started by CC & Andy which looks like it could be 5 out of the 7 games.

- You gotta take Cervelli as a 3rd catcher for those AJ games where you're gonna have to pinch hit for Molina late with Jorgie, then tun around a pinch run for Posada if he gets on which is why taking an extra SB threat like Freddy Guzman makes sense. I wouldn't mind seeing Gardy start a game or two in this series. He deserves it. No problem with Melky, but he really hasn't done too much with the bat for awhile now. Give Gardner a start or two here and see if the extra dimension he brings can help us.

i saw a graphic put up on ESPN this morning where CC has a career regular season ERA of just over 1.00 when pitching on 3 days' rest... i think he'll be fine, & like i said in a game 7 it's all hands on deck so if he doesn't have his best stuff in the first few innings u use everyone & anyone to fill in the rest of the game & eek out a victory by any means necessary... i'm fine w/having CC pitch on 3 days' rest considering all these factors & have much more confidence in a scenario like that over starting Gaudin in what could be a pivotal game 4 in Anaheim.

how are u gonna have Bruney, Cervelli, Gardner & Guzman on the roster? someone has to go unless ur thinking about leaving Gaudin off the roster, & we will need a long relief man in case a game goes into extra innings... Joba, Hughes, Coke, Aceves & Robertson are all likely to be used in spot relief situations during a close game in the late innings.

^^^i like having these types of problems for a change. lots of good talent to go with, just need to make decisions about who's best for the particular situation. cant wait till friday....we gonna bukkakke those angels. ps, speaking of bukkakke, me and dj are gonna sit behind the matsui's again this game....

Save the pic, go to Fred Kinkos website and upload it there. You will then have the option of printing out a big ass poster of it but it's a good amount of dough. Or save it on a disk and take it to a Kinkos. Whatever. Either way it wont be a couple of bucks.
djsunyc @ 10/14/2009 3:34 PM
game 1: cc vs. lackey
game 2: aj vs. saunders
game 3: andy vs. weaver
game 4: cc vs. kazmir
djsunyc @ 10/14/2009 3:35 PM
the managing battle begins...girardi goes w/ 3 starters and scoscia goes with saunders in ny instead of weaver.
TMS @ 10/14/2009 3:36 PM
great pitching matchups in this series... we got the edge in the bullpen but Angels play such great fundamental baseball, should be a tough, tough series... looking forward to it!
VDesai @ 10/14/2009 5:06 PM
I think we have a huge bullpen edge...if we play our game, make their starters throw a ton of pitches and get into their bullpen I think that propels us. Their advantage on us is speed. If having to pay attention to Chone Figgins causes our guys to lose their composure we're in trouble.
