not to mention jeter, arod (although he was intentionally walked), posada and matsui didn't show up tonight.
When it comes to who do you blame for tonight's loss, I put them in this order:
Wang
Torre
Posada
Matsui
Everyone else just didn't have good games.
wang didn't pitch well.
down 6-3, the game was still alive but the indians pen (sans barowski) is damn good.
wang
posada
torre
It was very much alive, that's why I don't put a guy in there with about a week of MLB experience. The Jacobs Field crowd was going crazy after Martinez's HR and it was no place for Ohlendorf. Hughes would have had a better chance there.
Posada not getting the tying run in there with less than 2 outs really hurt there. If they can tie it there or take the lead when they know it's Sabathia's last inning (they could have even knocked him out of the game), it's a completely different game.

Once Wang showed he didn't have it, Torre had no choice but to go to Hughes.
I agree 100%
That was was one of those games where you don't think twice about it. Forget about it, can't learn from it. Just be ready to play tommorow and win the series.

agreed!
I'm not gonna make too much out of one game but it does seem like post-all-star break Wang's sinker has been much less consistent.

The only thing consistent about Wang's sinker is that it's consistently up in the zone.

That's very worrisome
Wang is just a much better pitcher at home:
Home 2.75 1.13 .235
Away 4.91 1.50 .300

The question is WHY is he so much better at home and what can he do to improve on the road.

Yankee stadium tends to play more pitchers cause its a bigger park...otherwise just comfort.
a few comments & observations about last night's game:
1 - if Jorge & Matsui don't hit this series, we're cooked, cuz it's clear the tribe is not going to let ARod beat them they way he did on that walk off in the regular season
2 - Matsui should not be starting right now... his swing looks terrible & he's opening up & hitting those pathetic grounders to 2B once again... put Duncan vs. lefties & Giambi vs. righties
3 - i had no problem w/Jeter not bunting the runners over w/0 outs... he's a career .500 hitter vs. CC & also happens to be our most clutch hitter in the postseason over his career... plus CC was not throwing strikes at that juncture either & struggling w/his control... why give him a free out in that situation only to hand it to a more favorable matchup for CC in facing a lefty hitter in Abreu? that's playing right into the Indian's hands.
4 - if Joe was going to use Hughes anyway, why did he wait til the game was completely out of hand before he did it? why not have him relieve Wang, who's control was obviously not there last night, & then try to stop the bleeding when it was 5-3? instead u bring in Ohlendorff who has even less experience pitching at this level than Hughes & the score becomes 9-3... another brilliant use of our BP by Torre.

ITA. #4 pissed me off the most. It made no sense to bring in Ohlendorf ahead of Hughes. That's what the long man is for, if the starter doesn't have it. #2 was the other thing that really bothered me. I'd like to see Giambi DHing today against Carmona. Matsui is hurting and just isn't right. I had no confidence with Matsui up yesterday. At least Giambi will work the pitcher and has a shot at walking.
agreed about Giambi... he should be in the lineup tonight over Matsui & Doug M should be starting at 1B.
yeah I'm hoping Giambi will play. I have a party to go to and will likely miss the game!
let's just hope & pray Andy's got his A game going tonight... at least we have Joba, Vizco & Mo all available tonight at full strength... we all saw how good the Indians' setup men are last night... if i were them i wouldn't even go to Borowski in any save situation, cuz the Yankees have owned him all season long.
I have complete faith in Andy. He'll give us a good 6 innings tonight at a minimum. Then Joba for 2 and Mo to take us back to NY at a game apiece, with Westbrook and Byrd to beat on at the big ballpark in the Bronx.
